Updates from the Lair 5/10/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I’m dooooooooooonnnnnnnne! I finished my last final exam, my last grading, and proctored the exam for the class I was TA’ing so I’m now completely done with the semester from crazy town :D. What a crazy semester huh? And now May is going to be crazy in a whole different way because I need to move and get married and plan the ceremony and reception, and do research probably >.>. But, I took a couple of days to relax and reset and read some ARCs that I was wishing I had gotten to sooner, ha!

My Week

Pirate's AlleyI got a copy of Pirate’s Alley last weekend and couldn’t resist diving in right away since I was really in the mood for urban fantasy and omg it was sooooo good! This series has gotten so rocking, you simply must read it if you like urban fantasy!

The NoviceThen I’ve had The Novice waiting for me to finish it for over a week, so I burned through that in a day. It was light and fun if a bit typical fantasy with elves and dwarves and orcs (and a white orc leading them, ha, Jackson lost his orc!). It reminded me a lot of Harry Potter + World of Warcraft ;-).

Station ElevenI was in the mood for something a bit different for my audiobook this week, so I decided to start Station Eleven. I probably would never have bought this myself, but I won it earlier this year and it looked interesting, so I’m giving it a try! The writing is really lovely and it is a story of a apocalypse caused by a deadly flu, so it isn’t too out of my normal reads, but it is very much an adult literary post-apocalyptic story and I’m really enjoying listening to it.

NIL UnlockedI wasn’t sure about NIL Unlocked since book one was pretty romance focused without looking into why the crazy island was the way it was, but I am so happy to report that this book was everything I wanted book one to be (and you really don’t need to read book one first). They find out how they got on the island, why it exists, how everything works and then work to fight back, yey! I finished this book in a day shockingly (a day where I did literally nothing else, but still!).

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Second Guard Sword of the North

I’ve made a serious dent in my physical ARCs pile and I’m going to continue trying to get completely caught up with that with Sword of the North this coming week. I’m really excited to read this sequel since it looks like it is everything I enjoyed about book one and more! I’ve been focusing on physical books lately, so I’m not sure if I’ll get to another eARC, but if I do, I think I’ll be trying The Second Guard since a middle grade fantasy is always nice to throw into the mix ;-). Have you read either?

Happy Reading!

    • Haha, the problem with catching up on reading days is that you fall behind on everything else >.>

Yay for getting things done. And a lot of beautiful things wait for you in May. A wedding. Weee. :)

I read first book in Sentinels of N.O. series and was not impressed. But you are tempting me to give it another chance.

I am glad you liked The Novice. It was fun for me too.

I haven’t read any of the books you plan to read next but I am looking forward to hear more. Both look intriguing.

    Happy reading this week. ;)

  5. Woo-Hoo! Congrats on being DONE Anya^^ Try to get some really good rest in before all the wedding crazies kick in :) I need to read The Novice myself, but I’m still waiting for it to show up in my mailbox – us Canadians always get our arcs later than everyone else XD Anyway, I like that it’s a short, light read. We need one of those from time to time ;)
