Updates from the Lair 5/17/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I’m a married woman! We had the civil ceremony in the courthouse on Friday and now I just need to plan the formal ceremony and reception in the fall, woot. There was an entertaining moment when my ring didn’t fit onto my finger because the resized one hasn’t come back yet, but we made it work ;-). Needless to say I haven’t had a whole lot of reading time with family in town, but still a little!

My Week

The Gospel of LokiMy reading has been pretty all over this week since I haven’t had a chunk of actual reading time, but I started The Gospel of Loki in the car while showing the family around and am already hooked. I got a bit burnt out on Loki stories so I was nervous, but as long as I don’t picture him as a certain very attractive super villain, I’m enjoying it a lot! It’s very funny :D.

The Second GuardI’m conflicted about my other read this week, The Second Guard. I was really enjoying it at first and then it got rather typical and preachy MG and I found myself not wanting to read at all (and hence set it aside for Loki). I’ll probably come back to it sometime, but it wasn’t fitting my mood.

Sword of the NorthI am only 100-ish pages into Sword of the North and have been switching it off with lighter fantasy, but I’m excited to be back in this grimdark fantasy world. I’m also REALLY FREAKING EXCITED about the direction the plot seems to be going because it is referring to ancient races coming back and I love that so so so much.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

I’m currently in the middle of about four books I think, so I probably shouldn’t even think about starting anything else. However, I’ll be finishing my audio book on my next drive on Monday, so help me pick my next audiobook!

The Shadow Revolution Half Wild The Wrath and the Dawn Anansi Boys

Happy Reading!

  1. Be careful when you post your review for The Joanne Harris book. Our blog was attacked over a three star rating for one of her books. It was horrible.

    • Good to know! I’m giving it four stars, so hopefully that’ll be okay, but gah people are so stupid!

  2. Congratulations!!!!!!

  3. Congratulations!! :)

  6. What to read next? Um, um…I guess just read whatever you’re enjoying most at the moment since that will likely result in finishing it quickly. But I’m generally bad about reading several books at the same time. I need to fully finish books to feel productive. ;)

    • Haha, excellent advice! I somehow got on a historical fantasy kick and now a sci-fi kick. Normally reading multiple books at once is okay, but I keep accidentally reading all the same genre at once, oops!

  7. I feel like I’ve had a copy of The Gospel of Loki for ages, and I was really excited to find it, but I haven’t actually read any of it yet! I’m disappointed in myself, honestly, since I really should have read it by now.

Well, June isn’t going to be as crazy for reading as May has been, so maybe I’ll try to make the time for it then, so I can finally see if it’s as good as I strongly suspect it will be.

    • I know the feeling! But it’s quite short and light so you’ll get through it quickly when you’re in the right mood ;-)

  8. CONGRATS ANYA! THAT SOUNDS SO EXCITING. And it sounds like you’re drowning in all these long fantasy books hahah! I haven’t read any of the books you have on audio, but I guess I’ll suggest either Neil Gaiman or The Wrath and the Dawn!

    • Thanks!!! If Audible would cooperate, I would listen to Anansi Boys next, sigh, but I did listen to The Wrath and the Dawn!

  9. Oh, congratulations! Is it common to have a separate ceremony later on? I wish you all the happiness!

I’m looking forward to your review of Half Wild; I’ve had it on my TBR for a while now but haven’t managed to get to it yet.

    • Thanks! Apparently it’s a European thing, but not done in America much. It’s just what works for us since we’re living far away from all our family ;-)

  10. Shadow Revolution! I really liked that one. The main male characters reminded me of the Sherlock Holmes movies, but with paranormal twists. There are a few gory scenes, but they didn’t bother me, fitting with the storyline and all.

And congrats again on your marriage! Glad the ring decided to cooperate!

      Thanks!!

  11. Wow, congratulations! That’s fantastic news.

  14. Congratulations Anya, I’m so pleased for you! Must be wonderful to be marrying the person you love, ah, so so happy! Personally, I think you should read/listen to Half Wild, I seriously love that whole series and it’s such a great sequel. Little lacking in pace, but great in character, go for it! :D

    • Thanks!! Honestly I think I’m most excited to move in with him so I can actually see him every day finally!

Thanks for the recommendation, I think I’ll be listening to Half Wild next :D
