Updates from the Lair 5/29/16

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Another week of class is complete! Things are still going really well, though I’m definitely appreciating my weekend to unwind a bit.

My Week

The RootThis book is the reason that this post is late. I thought about writing the post early, but didn’t want to put down The Root because it is so flipping good! The magic is complex and amazing, the world(s) are fascinating, and I can count the number of white characters on one hand. That’s right, a cast of people of all skin colors and sexualities and gender identities in this amazing fantasy!!!!! I CAN’T GET OVER THIS BOOK, PRE-ORDER IT!!!!

The Aeronaut's WindlassI started the audiobook of The Aeronaut’s Windlass finally! I knew I’d like this book for obvious reasons, but I had to be at the right place to dive into something so massive ;-). No one told me there were talking cats though!!

Perfect StateBetween longer audiobooks, I also listened to the novella Perfect State. I swear I’m not actually trying to get though my Hugo list last minute, it was just a perfect time to finally listen to this one! And ummm, well that was odd. I don’t tend to read book descriptions if I’m confident about the author, so I had no idea what I was getting into here and it is far outside of what I was expecting. Definitely interesting, but perhaps too much packed into a novella? Am I alone here??

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Wicked Embers This Savage Song

I’ve been craving a fun urban fantasy for a while so I grabbed Wicked Embers from the library and read the first chapter. It’s definitely what I’m in the mood for, so I’ll be reading that this week. I also will probably actually finish my current eARC and start This Savage Song this week if everything goes as planned! What are you reading?

Happy Reading!

  1. Lol. Brandon Sanderson will be the first person to admit that he hates to write shorter length books. He tries to write them and they always balloon into huge doorstoppers. So, no, I’m not surprised that he packed a lot into a novella, for sure. :)

  2. I was liking PERFECT STATE until towards the end, then I was kind of like “Huh?”. It didn’t really work for me.
