Updates from the Lair 5/31/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Wow so tired! I’m nearly completely moved out of my apartment and into the husband’s, we just have to clean and turn in keys today. Oh and then unpack all my stuff and find places to put it! We had been hoping to move into a rented house, but haven’t been able to find one, so we’re in his apartment for now which is a little tight. Some of my books will probably have to stay in storage D:.

My Week

Six of CrowsI was lucky to be able to borrow a copy of Six of Crows and it is flipping AMAZING! I’m finished and it was just so wonderful. Bardugo’s writing has gotten to interstellar levels of awesomeness, the character cast is incredibly diverse and lovely anti-heroes, the developments of the Grisha power are so cool and realistic and interesting. I’m just so excited that this new series exists!

Silver in the BloodSilver in the Blood, however, was a bit disappointing. I love George’s other series and can’t help but feel she dropped the ball on this one. It is really slow, the two girls are rather dull and don’t take it upon themselves to direct their lives much, the supernatural elements are pretty predictable, just blah :(.

Rebel MechanicsI just started Rebel Mechanics but I’m already about halfway and really enjoying it. I love Verity, I love her charges (adorable child alert!), I love the developing romance and intrigue, and I love the way magic is used! I never thought I’d enjoy steampunk so much :D.

NovaI also recently started Nova and am quite enjoying it. It’s a sci-fi about a woman who is a genetically engineered bomb and in 36 hours will blow up the space station she is on. I thought she wasn’t going to be happy about that, but so far she seems to think her purpose is a good one, so I’m really curious how things will develop.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Range of Ghosts Earth Flight

I got hit with the Audible bug in the latest iOS update and now my app crashes within a minute of me trying to play anything. Therefore, I’m hoping that I will be able to get further in Range of Ghosts this coming week because I really enjoyed the first hour of it that I got to listen to before everything went to hell! I also just got Earth Flight in the mail and will not be able to resist reading it asap, it’s so pretty!!!!!!

Happy Reading!

  1. Yay! I can’t wait to start Six of Crows and Rebel Mechanics (as soon as I finish ADSOM)! And I agree; Silver in the Blood was bit…meh. Unfortunate, but true.

  3. Moving is exhausting! I’m excited for you that you’re done :) Sadly, my fiance and I are making the opposite move – he’s moving out for a new job in San Jose – but I’m excited to join him in May when I finish my PhD!

    • I know how that goes! That was me for the last three years D: And now the boy is all “well maybe I’ll stay at my job for a while after you find a new one and then I’ll follow” and I’m just noooooooooo!

  4. I hate moving, I do it all the time and moving books is so much work. Hoping you are able to relax a bit this week.

    • I’m definitely thinking we’ll stay in our current apartment for a while now since we’re both so sick of moving!

  5. Noes! Poor books. I hope you guys find something bigger soon :)

    • Me too! Otherwise I might have to rent a storage unit and set up bookshelves in it, haha, insta-library!

  6. Nova sounds very interesting;I hadn’t heard of it before but now you have me curious.

Good luck unpacking, blergh. Moving is no fun.

  8. Putting books in storage is sad and tragic, I get separation anxiety D: Hopefully you guys will find a house soon and all your babies can come back to you haha! I was lucky enough to get Six of Crows too and even though I know I don’t *need* to read the Grisha books first, I sort of do because it’s high time I read them…so I’ll be getting to those first. Happy reading^^ x

    • I keep thinking of ones that I want to read but can’t get to D:

It’s legit to read the Grisha books first since I think it’ll make you appreciate some of the references more ;-)

  9. Silver in the blood: how disappointing :(
Six of Crows: wasn’t expecting anything else but ‘AMAZING’ :D
