Updates from the Lair 6/8/16

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I survived! More than that, I passed my comprehensive exam and it wasn’t too painful at all ;-). This means that all I have left to do in the next year is write and defend my dissertation :D. Oh and apply to jobs…. And teach that class this summer…. But for the next week, life is less crazy than normal!

My Week

StiletooI rewarded myself for finishing my comprehensive exam by starting Stiletto :D. It’s got different focal characters than Rook, which makes me a little sad, but I’m enjoying exploring the world more. The humor is showing up again now that I’m about halfway, but it took a while.

Every Heart a DoorwayI started the audiobook of Every Heart a Doorway and wow I’m loving this so much! The narration is great and the twist on portal fantasy is so lovely. Plus, the main character is self-identified asexual, what???? This is the first asexual main character I have ever encountered and it’s awesome!

Between Two ThornsWe started our read along of Between Two Thorns and I’m excited. I had no idea at all going in what it would be about, so it’s a lot of fun to find out all about this cool fantasy world.

Moving ForwardI also read the novella Moving Forward and I really recommend it. It is about what happens after a zombie plague has been fought off and stars a middle-age, black, bisexual woman. Fantastic writing, super unique premise, and a absolutely lovely main character. And I don’t even normally like zombie stories!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Bout of Books is next week and I’m planning on taking full advantage of that excuse to get a lot of reading done before starting teaching the week after next :D. Therefore, these are the June ARCs that I want to get all through along with various eARCs from May and June. I’m going to be employing my harsh DNF policy and writing up a bunch of Just Hatched posts for any that I think will be of interest to you all even if they don’t work for me ;-). What should I start with??

Happy Reading!

OMG Stiletto is OUT! Lawd I will wait for your review but I have waited so long and if the central characters aren’t the same I am SUPER on the fence.

  4. I’d love to know what you think of Steeplejack! So that gets my vote. :)
