Updates from the Lair

Hello again! It’s been a crazy busy week again because I was on vacation (wait, what?). The kind of vacation where we (boyfriend and I) visit nearly all of our family scattered across two states. So much driving! I got some reading done (two books approximately), but I was so exhausted for a lot of it that I just napped and that was nice too. I’m right on schedule for what I want to get read this month (and the driving did help give me a little more time on for catching up), so that is great right :D. I however am still finding it impossible to find time to listen to my audiobook, so that needs to get fixed somehow.

My Week

I finished Ink yesterday which wasn’t hard since I had read most of it on the drive home ;-). I am actually still waiting on my copy of this from Goodreads, but my friend let me borrow her copy so I could at least read it close to the release date, haha. If I don’t get that copy soon, I’m just going to buy a finished copy since it is soooo pretty and I want to see all the illustrations :D. I quite enjoyed this one, though it wasn’t anything special. The interior illustrations really helped bump Ink’s rating, I must admit, hehe. It reminded me a bit of The Rithmatist as far as the magic goes, since things drawn by certain people come to life ya know?

Royal Street

Next was Royal Street since I have the third book for review. (Technically I read this one before Ink >.>) I loved the setting of Royal Street (Katrina New Orleans), but it seemed to just be a mash up of Dresden and Kate Daniels :-/. I’m hoping that that was just the first book, since the second book is currently on the top of the pile so that I can review the third, haha. Anyone been reading this series and have advice about how the rest compares to the first? I’m worried that I’m burned out on UF still….

Forbidden Sea

Finally, I started reading Forbidden Sea for the mermaid challenge :D. This is my fourth mermaid book this summer, which is pretty good for my first challenge ;-). I literally just started it since the library reminded me it’ll be due soon, so I can’t say much about it. I like it so far though! Except the mermaid is supposed to have light hair and dark skin *glares at cover* way to white wash…..

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

I’m giving away an ARC of Sylo or Love Minus Eighty!

I loved the overweight protagonist in Girl of Fire and Thorns.

I repotted my orchids!

Mist got 4 stars, though I’ve been rethinking that a bit, it was a bit meh

I gave The Sweetest Dark 4.5 stars, history fantasy for the win!

I proposed a new way to recommend books: provide the books and let them choose :D

Tuesdays at the Castle got 4 stars, such a fun MG!

Reports from Other Lairs

Here are some awesome reviews and discussions you should check out :D

Cobweb Bride from Bookworm Dreams (4 stars, historical)

Foundling from Phoenix Fantasy (4 stars, YA)

Dreams Underfoot from Bibliopunkk (5 stars, short stories)

Happy Reading!

Oh I hope you had fun visiting all the families! It’s good that you were able to get in some reading time too :D I’m happy that you seem to have enjoyed Ink more than I did but I completely agree with you that the drawings in there were really special! Pretty sure I’ll like The Rithmatist an awful lot more though XD Forbidden Sea sounds brilliant, can’t wait to read your thoughts on it! I do quite like the cover though but it sucks that it doesn’t match with the MC :( lighting skin on covers is NOT cool.

Congrats on the good looking week girl!!

    • Oh yes, The Rithmatist is definitely far above Ink! The magic just reminded me of it, hehe. I unfortunately didn’t think Forbidden Sea was all that special by the end, oh well!

  2. I only read Royal Street and didn’t bother continuing with the series. It was okay, I suppose, and it had an interesting concept running through it, but the alpha-male romance has never appealed to me, and there was a lot of that in the book. From what I hear, the rest of the series is as good as the first book, so make of that what you will. Might be worth continuing with, if you liked Royal Street.

    • Exactly! I’ve always been into the quiet nice boys, haha. I have to say that I like River Road more than Royal Street so far, and I think it’s partially from the tone, it feels a lot more summery or something since it’s 3 years after Katrina!

Ink looks pretty interesting, I’m glad you enjoyed it. And the cover does look pretty!

I hadn’t heard of either of your other reads this week though. I think I’d be irritated if the cover didn’t match the description of a character as well. Actually, I know I would be!

    • Right?? When the mermaid was first described I literally went back to the cover to try to get a good mental image and was like wtf….
