Updates from the Lair

Hello everyone! Oof, what a week. Well, I’ve started my qualifying exam and there was some panicking, but I’m better now ;-). I was able to finish the couple of review books published early this month, and now I have time to read some for-me books :D. This coming week is going to also be insanely busy because I have a conference to go to before GenCon :D.

My Week

Magic Rises

I started Magic Rises this week since it came out a couple weeks ago! I’m so excited, I love this series :D. The start has been awesome since we’ve headed to Europe and get to see how life post-Shift is over there. I had an amusing moment when I wondered why they weren’t flying there (boat trip takes two weeks!) and then realized it would be really bad to be in a plane when a magic wave hit >.> Doh!

Codex Born by Jim C. HinesI finished Codex Born early this week. I had been aiming to finish before the release, but then I found out that my review copy was missing about 30 pages D: . I was planning to buy my friend a book anyway, so she let me read those pages from hers ;-). I freaking loved this book. I do wish that it had been written from Lena’s perspective, but the Lena diary entries were so much fun to read :D.

The Lies of Locke Lamora

Omg, I’m listening to The Lies of Locke Lamora on audio and it freaking rocks! I highly recommend this one for audio. The narrator does all the different voices quite well and he makes the swearing sound hilarious! I wish that I was driving more so that I could listen to it faster haha.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

I gave Codex Born 4 stars, highly recommended series!

The White Forest also earned 4 stars, a very lovely gothic fantasy ;-)

I asked whether list style reviews are easier to read and write, since they are for me!

River Road got 4.5 stars, loved this second book :D

We talked about the books we wish had had sequels for Top Ten Tuesday!

I gave The Weight of Souls 3.5 stars, such a cliff hanger!

Wow, you’re reading a lot of books/series that sound really good! I’ve heard about the Kate Daniels series but I don’t really know much about it…I’ll have to check it out on GR and refresh my memory heh The Magic Ex Libris books, I think I remember you reading book 1 so that’s another one for me to double check on GR and make sure it’s on the reading list! And I feel like I’ve seen the Gentleman Bastard series around a lot but for some reason I never really paid attention >.< I get glaring 'oblivious-moments' like that sometimes!

Anyways, I hope you exams went well! And your conference too :) You still managed to have a fantastic looking week despite being so busy :D Oh and thanks for the link to my review…what a letdown that one was…sigh.

    • Haha, I completely understand, it usually takes me a few times seeing a book mentioned before it registers at all! I highly recommend them all though, so freaking awesome!

  2. Haha – so I clicked over to the Love Minus Eighty review *mind you I LOVED this book and I LOVE hearing what other people think about books I’ve loved….* BUT this goes back to the point you made in a previous post – I do NOT like to read reviews that are over 500 words in length. Heck I berate myself if I go past that. So a 1000 word count review is just too much. It’s a book report not a book review. Though I do love all the things bookworm blues had to say. But the average non book blogger reader looking for reviews I doubt would want to read our long reviews.

    • Ha, excellent point! I was excited to see what others thought of that one since I just gave my copy away for that giveaway, so I think that helped my skimming habit ;-)

  3. I started reading “The Lies of Locke Lamora” a couple of days ago. Loving it so far, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

  4. I’m getting Lies of Locke Lamora next week! I can’t wait to read it. I usually don’t read Adult books, but this one is the exception :P

  5. Thanks for the mention! Nothing says “drop by again soon” like mentioning eating toenails, I feel! :)

I started the Kate Daniels books but have only read Magic Bites so far – I actually did really enjoy it though. Much more than any urban fantasy I’ve read recently (which most certainly includes one queasiness-inducing Prague-based book that we could mention..).

I’ve never read any Jim C. Hines. I really must fix that!

Good luck with all of your qualifying exam work :)

    • Hahahahaha, omg that still cracks me up that that was actually in a book! Oo, yes, the Kate Daniels series just keeps getting better too, it’s one of my favorite UF and set the bar pretty high for all the rest in the genre

  6. Oh, Anya! I hope you love love love The Burning Sky when you read it. I think given your love of fantasy it will be right up your alley.
