Updates from the Lair 8/2/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello future! I’m writing this updates post super early because I’m hopping on a jetplane as this goes live and I’m a responsible adult who doesn’t procrastinate or something like that ;-). I’m going to a very exciting workshop hosted by the National Science Foundation for the professional development of graduate students and I’m hoping it is really helpful (though it could also go horribly, we shall see!). Amusingly, it is in Indianapolis immediately after GenCon, but I couldn’t take that much socialization all in the row >.>. Also we signed the lease for our house and hopefully I’ve already brought the first load of books over!!!!!

My Week

Villain KeeperI’ve started Villain Keeper this week and it is delightful! It’s a reverse portal fantasy where the main characters come from a fantasy land to our world and is quite realistic in how two kids without guardians and convinced magic is real would be received (ie not well). I’m quite intrigued by the mystery of what is really going on and there are dragons! The dragons are different than usual in that they are just remnants of the emotions let off during extreme magic, but I find new versions of dragons fascinating :D.

His Majesty's DragonSpeaking of dragons! I started the audiobook of His Majesty’s Dragon finally and am loving it! Temeraire the dragon is fantastic and I love him to bits. I just got to a part where Temeraire is separated from his chosen human for a bit and it nearly broke my heart. I want a dragon to love me that much!!! Seriously, this audiobook is the bomb ;-).

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Firewalker The Magicians The Unwanteds

Since I seem to be going through my physical books faster than my e-books currently, I think the next book I grab will be Firewalker since it’s next on the physical ARC stack! I also of course got two library holds in at once, so I might start The Magicians and/or The Unwanteds on my trip if I’m feeling rebellious ;-). What do you think I should read first?

Happy Reading!

  1. I would LOVE to come to Minnesota for a wedding!

I have a lot of fellow-feeling for Temeraire. He likes reading and shiny things.

  2. Temeraire is the best!

    K. asked me a couple of days ago if I was following your blog and I realized that would probably be a great way to stay in touch with you. Hopefully you’ll hear from me more often now. We miss you!

    • He iiiiiiiiiis! The audiobook is so delightful too because he has such a cute voice, haha. It’s so good to hear from you! I miss you toooooo! You don’t want to come to Minnesota for a wedding do you? ;-)

  3. I was just going to stop by and see what was going on, out of mild curiosity, just trying to procrastinate before bed, and now I can’t stop thinking about reading Unwanteds after I checked out the synopsis. Was I supposed to get a slight Old Man’s War vibe, or am I just weird? (Probably it’s just me)

Have fun at your workshop! Or have … productivity. Guh. It’s late.

    • Sorry to keep you up! So I must admit, I haven’t read Old Man’s War (yet!), but I could see Unwanteds being a middle grade equivalent sort of haha

  4. Yay have fun at the conference! And moving (haha)! Also the premise of Villain Keeper sounds fantastic, I’ll have to check that out. I would say read Firewalker, but I’ve never read Trial By Fire, so it’s just the one that’s most familiar to me :P

  5. I hope you’re enjoying the conference. I understand about too much socializing, it’s just not normal, lol. Enjoy your reads!
