Updates from the Lair 8/23/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I’m slowly climbing back into a normal routine all! We still have a crazy amount of unpacking to do (not helped by the husband working twelve-hour nights this weekend), but it’s at the point where we can live in the house and just walk around the remaining boxes, haha. I even bought some potted flowers to put outside :D. I haven’t gotten a whole lot of reading done again since I’m trying to prioritize working and unpacking, but audiobooks are still the best! We’re heading out to Minnesota at the end of this coming week to meet with all our vendors for the wedding reception, so hopefully I’ll get in some reading then ;-).

Also, any of you have a hybrid Chevy or Ford and have opinions on it? I need a new car….

My Week

Shadows of Self*pets the precious* I’m currently slowly getting through Shadows of Self and loving every stolen minute of it! You know you’re tired when you can’t keep your eyes open to keep reading Sanderson…. But I’m seriously loving this book even more than Alloy of Law and you all should get on that pre-ordering asap.

The Fifth SeasonI’m currently listening to The Fifth Season and oh my god it rocks so much! The narration is fantastic, to the point that I haven’t sped it up like I normally do because I want to savor every sentence. The premise is so so cool and Jemisin has done it again with her unique mix of amazing worlds, refreshingly original writing style, and epic plot. Go listen to this book!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Firewalker Dragon Heart Court of Fives

Since I’ll be going on another road trip at the end of the week, I’ll be bringing along lots of books to read! In reality, I’m just hoping to finish everything I currently have going, but I can’t risk being without something to read ;-). I’m going to try Firewalker again since I wasn’t in the mood for it the last time I started it. Then I just got Dragon Heart in the mail and of course must read it immediately! Finally, I got an audio copy of Court of Fives that I’ll start if I finish Fifth Season anytime soon and I’m quite excited to see what everyone is talking about :D.

Happy Reading!

  1. Ugh, I hope unpacking goes quickly. We’ve lived in this apartment now for three years and I am still not unpacked.

    • Haha yeah I unpacked the last box at my old apartment as I was getting ready to pack to move since I wanted to go through and get rid of some of the stuff!

  2. I just got Court of Fives but haven’t slotted it into my reading schedule yet. I’m trying to fit in some other summer new arrivals first once I catch up on review books. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  3. Hah, sounds like how I unpack. The rest of the unpacking will occur in good time. Enjoy the new home, and happy reading!

  4. Yay! All those other boxes will get unpacked when you need them, right? Eventually… *2 years down the road* Oh, I forgot we had that! Yep, it always happens with at least one box. ;)

My reading has kind of died too. Yay law school homework. :P (I’m remembering why I didn’t go back to school for three years.) But audiobooks sound like a good idea! Especially now that I have a longer commute…as long as traffic isn’t too bad. Hope everything goes well with the vendor meet-up and the start of the semester!

    • Haha, that happened with me at my old apartment with two boxes! I could have sworn I had lost a pair of boots and my kitchen knives but no, they were still packed for two years….

Audiobooks are great for commutes and picking easier ones is good for distracting traffic ;-)

  5. Congrats on getting things done :) sorry your reading hasn’t been much though. I love audiobooks when you are doing things they make reading go by quickly and you get other things done too. :)

  6. Very curious to hear what you think of Fire Walker. I didn’t love the first book so wonder if this one will be better. Did you love book 1? I can’t recall. So happy you got the Sanderson book! whoohoo!! So exciting being moved in! It is so much work but such an amazing experience too.

    • I did end up enjoying the first book more than the rest of you, so I have hope ;-) Though I think now I’m running into the same issues you three had with book one because it isn’t clicking >.> Mood is such a weird thing!

  7. SANDERSON!!!! I’m ashamed to admit that I STILL need to read The Alloy of Law D: I needed to recover after finishing Hero of Ages – Sanderson books give me the most intense hangovers ever! But now I need to catch up, if freaking real life can give me a spare second XD I’m glad that things are calming down a bit with the move AND that you’re reading some Sanderson of course ;) Good luck with the wedding planning stuff and enjoy the roadtrip! xx

    • Oh no! So I’ll warn you that I didn’t LOVE Alloy of Law because I was expecting Mistborn and it is not Mistborn. But go in expecting a western mystery with cool fantasy and you’ll be happy I think ;-)
