Updates from the Lair

So this week I had my qualifying oral examination. I passed! It was however a very unpleasant experience and I’ve spent the rest of the week trying hard not to obsess about everything I screwed up on ;-). After the exam (ended at 1:30pm Wed.) I proceeded to take a break and finish two books >.>. It was fun :D. There was also Domino’s pizza, mmmmmmm. Then on Thursday I got to go to a signing with Holly Black! It was pretty splendid and I’ll probably do a write-up sometime soon.

My Week

Relativity by Cristin Bishara

One of the books I finished was Relativity. It’s a sweet and short read, so I just sat down and gobbled it up :D. It was delightfully nerdy and just what I needed this week. My review is coming next week I believe.

Full Blooded by Amanda Carlson

I also finished Full Blooded this week. I had been excited about this one since Carlson is from Minnesota and the book is set in the Twin Cities (I’m from Minnesota ;-) ), however I ended up being quite disappointed. I know a lot of other people have liked this one, so I’m not really sure what I was missing, but I found it rather fluffy UF with way too many info dumps. Thoughts?

The Grim Company by Luke Scull

Finally, I received The Grim Company this week and have gotten started on that! I’m quite amused by the antics so far, since Grim Company evidently enjoys turning fantasy tropes on their head. There is a character who believes himself to be a hero and so assumes things will work out for him and generally enjoys blustering about being “heroic.” Then there are the barbarians that are past their prime, a female fighter who has been rather mysterious so far, a drug-addicted alchemist, and an “oddly capable manservant.” Quite delightful dark fantasy so far!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Chaos of the Stars was an enjoyable and quite YA with egyptian mythology.

This week we discussed the Top Ten Books that should be Movies!

I decided to join Waiting on Wednesdays and this week I’m waiting on Bang by Lisa McMann.

The Lies of Locke Lamora on audiobook was hilarious and priceless!

Frozen was a bit disappointing and jumbled unfortunately!

I’m giving away SIGNED ARCs of Doll Bones and Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black :D

I received a lovely balance of sci-fi and fantasy in this week’s Spoils and Tribute

  2. Congratulations on passing your exam! Oral exams are the worst.

  3. Oooh, I’d not heard anything about Relativity yet, but if it’s nerdy then I’m definitely curious. Will be keeping an eye out for more info on that one for sure!

Grim Company looks good – I couldn’t find it on Netgalley though =(

    • Oh sorry, that one isn’t on NetGalley, but it’s already out so you might be able to find it at the library. It was originally published in the UK!
