Updates from the Lair 9/27/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello all! Another blissfully boring week :D. I really need to catch up on reviews and get some more reading in somewhere, but at least I’ve been getting a lot of work done on my dissertation, woot woot! Those of you with live-in partners: how to do you fit in reading time?? I feel like all I’m doing these days is work and hang out with hubby in the evenings and maaaaaybe I’ll read a bit before falling asleep. Oh and he doesn’t read so adorable mutual reading time isn’t going to happen :(.

My Week

Nebula Awards Showcase 2015I’ve finally dove headfirst into The Nebula Awards Showcase 2015. I’ve finished the short stories and am on to the novelettes! All the shorter nominees are included as well as the winners so it has been fun to compare the different nominees and form my own opinions of who I think should have won ;-). I have to admit that some of the short stories didn’t really seem like real speculative fiction to me since one of them only happened to briefly take place in 2025 and had no other speculative elements…. But there is a lot of diverse characters in the various stories so that makes me happy to see!

The House of Shattered WingsI honestly initially wrote off The House of Shattered Wings because I’m  not into angel stories. But, I got the chance to review it through Audiobook Junkie and have been purposefully trying to read spec fic from authors of color, so I gave it a try! I’m quite glad I did :D. The angels are interesting since they are fallen but not evil and the setting of war-torn Paris is epic! Also I really hope we get to see more of Phillipe’s home of the Jade Court sometime since it sounds aaaaaaaawesome.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The White Rose The Tournament at Gorlan

I really enjoyed The Jewel, so I’ve been resisting reading The White Rose for a while, but it is finally time! I’m so excited!!!! I also am very excited to have gotten a copy of The Tournament at Gorlan so I’ll be starting that as soon as I finish the Nebula Showcase :D. One more week of work and then we’re driving out for the wedding, so I’ll get lots of reading done then ;-).

Happy Reading!

  1. It’s strange, isn’t it? You’re so happy to get school work done, yet so unhappy to not be reading. It’s a vicious cycle. :/

  2. Yup, having a live-in partner means sacrificing a lot of quality reading time for couple-y stuff…but it’s worth it (I suppose haha!) And mine doesn’t read either so no adorable couple reading time for me either. Let’s pout about that together for a bit XD By the looks of it, you have some great reading ahead of you so hopefully you can find time to devote to the task soon :)

  3. The Tournament at Gorlan was amazing! When I was finished it made me want to go out and buy the 12 books in the other series in that same world. (I didn’t because I have too many on my TBR pile at the moment, but I WANTED to! *laughs* )

And I’m amazed that your husband doesn’t read! It would make me want to shove books at him until he was hooked on some. Does he do things you aren’t interested in? Or hang out with friends for him-time? You could read then. But also, he had to know how much you like reading since you have the blog and all. So occasionally reading to help yourself unwind/get your fix shouldn’t bother him.

    • Haha, are you going to get the first one of the Ranger’s Apprentice at least?? I want to know how it is!

I got him interested in World War Z at first, but he only got half way! He definitely does understand my love of reading, we just lived separately for so long that we are figuring out how to balance our various times!

  4. I’m glad your dissertation is going well so far. As to squeezing in reading time — is there anything he likes to do that you’re not really into? I usually fit in reading time while my husband is watching sportsball or playing whatever videogame I’m not interested in hijacking, haha.

    • I do fit in some reading time when he gets sucked back into angry birds ;-). I should really encourage him to watch sports more or something!

  5. I’m glad to hear the Nebula Awards book is decent. Your others are new to me. Happy reading and have a good week!
