Updates from the Lair 4/5/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Yey for a normal week! I did some work, some homework, some reading, and some blogging! I’ve also been working on the blog for my lab but having trouble finding a theme that has all the features we want (header image space, featured image next to snippets of posts but don’t show up on the post’s page, right sidebar, anyone??) and am pretty sick of looking through themes O.O. The boy drove back to Minnesota on his own this time since I just couldn’t take the time off to drive there and back, so I’m kind of missing him :(. But I have books and friends to keep me company :D.

My Week

The Heart of BetrayalI’m ALMOST done with Heart of Betrayal and I’m pretty meh about it to be honest. There are hints of Lia having cool powers, but that is clearly not the focus of the plot for this book and I’m disappointed. There is also a lot of references to people and things from book one that I don’t remember at all, ouch!

Poison StudyI started the audio of Poison Study and it is so delightful! Valek’s narration is making me fall hard for him and I think I’m going to really like listening to this series finally :D. I kind of wish the poisons were real ones though so that I could learn about them, haha!

The Grace of KingsI’ve read a whole page of The Grace of Kings but the dedication and pronunciation guide have me already pretty excited that this will be a fantasy that uses aspects of East Asian culture well instead of slipshop. It will probably take me a week or two to get through it since it’s huge, but I’m excited! And look out for a giveaway tomorrow for your own copy :D.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Seriously Wicked Two Serpents Rise

I suspect that I won’t be finishing my current reads too soon, but I am planning to read Seriously Wicked as a fun and light break in between massive epic fantasies ;-). We’re starting our read-along of Two Serpents Rise next week too so I’m going to read the first 100ish pages :D.

Happy Reading!

  1. Yay for normal weeks! If you haven’t found a solution yet – Ashley (Nosegraze)’s tweak me theme (v1, idk about v2) has all that. You do have to change a setting, but its super simple on the theme options section, so that you can make the featured image not show up on the posts. That’s how I have mine setup right now, so I know it works. Hope you’re having another good, normal week :)

  2. Ugh I’ve been looking at themes until my eyes cross. I want to change my blog up and then I pick one, then I don’t like it anymore. Back in the olden days I used to code my own but the idea of that now makes my eyes cross again. lol.

    • I ended up really happy with Tweak Me if you’re willing to spend a bit of money but then be able to change it endlessly ha

  3. Hmm, are you looking for WordPress or Blogger themes for the lab blog? Free or self-hosted? Do you want the same image clip next to every post or a different one for each (and you don’t want it anywhere in the post)? I could see that being separately coded, but I can’t think of a blog theme off the top of my head with that built in. If you’re looking to do a free blog (but with lots of design wiggle room), I can send you a list of links to free responsive Blogger themes. (That’s what I’ve been doing. Taking a free responsive theme and then tweaking the CSS to death.)

Can’t wait to see your thoughts on Seriously Wicked! :)

  4. Looking for themes is exhausting! I remember how annoying it is every time I think of changing my blog’s layout, hah. I’d think most themes could support a header image (should be easy enough to add one even if not shown in a demo), so it would be the other two options that are most important.

I’ll be starting The Grace of Kings myself soon, and I’m pretty excited for it too!

  5. Lot’s of good looking books this week.

I hope you enjoy :) Happy Reading!

    • The boy is back finally! Sigh, just one more month and then I am moving out to his place and will be able to see him EVERY DAY!

  7. I love the Tweak Me theme from Nose Graze. It’s the same one Tabitha uses too. *grins*

  9. It’s great that this week was better! Maybe you could pick the closest theme that you can find and modify it to make it what you want. It might be faster than looking through tons of themes. Goodreads has been recommending me The Grace of Kings for a while now, but I’ve resisted adding another book to my TBR list so far.

    • I ended up picking a pretty versatile theme and spending half a day setting all the options how I wanted them, haha. Grace of Kings might deserve to be added to the TBR ;-)

  10. Aww that sucks that Heart of Betrayal isn’t working for you! I was also expecting a lot from that book but I don’t know if my expectations will be met haha. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE GRACE OF KINGS.

    • Maybe you’ll like it more now that you have slightly lower expectations ;-)

I’m really enjoying Grace of Kings so far :D

  11. Seriously Wicked looks cute! Happy Easter!

I’m glad that this week was better for you. :)
Looking for themes is so exhausting. I got annoyed and created one simple for myself.
I am looking forward to your thought on ‘The Grace of Kings’.
