Updates from the Lair 9/20/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hey loves! What to say about this week…. Not much to report, just more unpacking and trying to be productive in the mean time I guess. We had an exciting weekend last weekend with a friend needing an appendectomy and hubby was the closest to come over and be around in case their kids woke up. We brought dinner over last night and she’s doing well, just a bit sore. I haven’t gotten a whole lot of reading done since hubby has been home most of the week after working the weekend, but I did read all day Sunday!

My Week

The Rose SocietyI didn’t love The Rose Society as much as The Young Elites, but it still has some cool reveals and is a solid second book. I’m really curious to see how others like it since it takes the darkness and villainous nature of Adelina to a whole new level, ha.

Deja VuI was approached by Unsung Stories to read Deja Vu and found myself impressed with their website and covers so decided to give this small press a try. I’m quite happy I did, Deja Vu is a great read so far (I’m at 50%) and very interesting! I’m really excited to see what Unsung Stories comes out with in the coming year :D.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Nebula Awards Showcase 2015 The House of Shattered Wings

I never found myself paying much attention to the various speculative fiction awards despite my love of spec fic, but the past two years has changed that a lot. As I’ve followed more and more spec fic book blogs that discuss the Nebula and Hugo lists, I’ve become much more invested and even voted for the Hugos this year! Therefore I was quite excited to be offered a copy of the Nebula Awards Showcase 2015 to read. I don’t read enough short fiction and am quite enjoying that section currently. I’m not sure if I’ll read the novel excerpts since I don’t much like excerpts, we’ll see! I also just got an audio review copy of The House of Shattered Wings, which I’ve been meaning to read, so I’ll be starting that (Thanks Aetnee for the rec!!). What are you reading next?

Happy Reading!

  2. Oh, Deja Vu is one I was approved for but shamefully haven’t read yet. I’m glad to hear it is going well for you! I think I’m going to have to push myself to read all my requests before the year is out!

  3. As always, I look forward to getting your posts in my inbox, Anya! Keep up the awesome work. xoxo

  4. I’m really not sure if I should bother reading The Rose Society or not. I didn’t particularly like the first one, and if you liked the second even less, maybe it’s not worth it! I haven’t seen too many reviews of it yet.

  5. I read an amazing book from Unsung Stories (Dark Star) and Deja Vu looks really good as well. I also have The Nebula Showcase and I’ll be reading it soon, I hope. Yeah, not sure about the novel excerpts! I’m not a fan either:-)

  6. Ooooh, looking forward to your thoughts on House of Shattered Wings! That one had grabbed my attention too, but I haven’t gotten around to buying a copy yet.

Btw, I’m got less than 100 pages left on N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season – and OH MY GOODNESS, it might become my new favorite book of 2015 at this rate.
