Updates from the Lair 10/12/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hooray for a fairly average week, I’m tired of swinging between crazy productive and crazy unproductive ;-). This week was pretty much completely consumed by a parallel programming assignment that I spent literally five full work days on and still didn’t actually completely finish when I turned it in. It is kind of blissful to be able to look at the last couple of points on an assignment and admit that they don’t honestly matter for the amount of time it would take to figure out how to earn them. I’m freeeeee! And I read middle grade this week and have no regrets!

My Week

Thursdays with the Crown by Jessica Day GeorgeI really adored reading Thursdays with the Crown. I’ve liked this series since I read the first two books last year and was so pumped to pick up a copy of book three :D. You can easily start with this one if you don’t feel like catching up and want to jump into a fun fantasy adventure with adorable baby griffins, spunky kids, great role models for girls and boys and an actually quite intriguing plot even for adults! I read it in two nights and could have easily read it in one if I wasn’t so darn tired these evenings!

All Our YesterdaysI started listening to All Our Yesterdays this week and I’m really digging the audiobook and the story :D. My two hour drive this Friday went by soooooo quickly since I was figuring out what all the craziness was that All Our Yesterdays starts with ;-). I hope it stays as action-packed and intriguing!

Pennyroyal Academy

I decided to continue my middle grade binge with Pennyroyal Academy and wow, this is not the whimsical silliness that I was expecting. It is SO MUCH BETTER. Seriously, it starts with the main character running through haunted woods and she doesn’t have a name! It’s not that she doesn’t remember her name, it’s that she literally doesn’t have a name, her parents never gave her one. I was so intrigued from the very beginning and have been loving the reveals and the emphasis of princesses being valiant and good and brave. This has the potential to be a seriously rocking series!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Mortal Heart Shadow Scale

I think it’s time to take a break from middle grade fantasy and read some thicker books ;-). I’ve been intimidated by Mortal Heart’s size, but I got the eARC working on my reader finally, so I think I’ll focus on finishing up Princess of Thorns (I just haven’t had any eReading time!) and starting on Mortal Heart this week. I also just really want to sink into a good dragon fantasy, so it is time for Shadow Scale me thinks (and then I can do a giveaway for my copy :D).

Happy Reading!

  3. Pennyroyal Academy sounds awesome! There have been some really great MG fantasies coming out in the last couple of years; sometimes I think that the quality of those books rivals YA fantasy. And of course Shadow Scale will be amazing, how could it be anything less?! Very excited to hear your thoughts on that one. :)

    • Oh I definitely think some of these middle grade are actually better than a lot of the YA coming out these days, but I’m also picky and the same could be said for the best of one genre over the slush of another hehe

  4. Wow you have a Shadow Scale arc! Jealous. I’ll just buy it when it comes out I think :) you’ve made me want to read Penny Royal Academy and Thursdays with the crown!

    • I borrowed it from the bookseller friend, which I’m feeling very lucky about! She has all the pub friendships the lucky duck.

Oo you should! Maybe you need to read middle grade to deal with the pregnancy ;-)

  5. I think I have All Our Yesterdays on audio, so I need to look it up and try it – I love it when a story engrosses you and makes time fly! I have a few Middle Grades on my TBR to get to as well, I love the simple fun of them :) Congrats on an average week – I’m hoping this will be one of those for me :) Have another good one!

  8. Ooh yes All Our Yesterdays was truly something! I cannot wait for her upcoming novels >.<

    • I’m totally believing you! I have about two hours left on the audiobook and I’m shocked with how fast I’m getting through it :D

  10. I am SO READY to see the review for Shadow Scale. I found Seraphina on sale second hand, and I can remember the love I had for the book.

    • SO MUCH LOVE for Seraphina! I’m suffering that annoying guilt of feeling like I should read something that comes out sooner before I’m allowed to start Shadow Scale >.>

  11. I’m glad you’re enjoying All Our Yesterdays. I haven’t read it yet, but it’s nice to hear that it’s action-packed so far. :) Mortal Heart looks so good! I’ve heard amazing things about it, so I won’t be surprised if you end up loving it.

    Have a great week!

    • I’m almost done with All Our Yesterdays and there is still lots of action :D. I’m really excited to start Mortal Heart and I’ve read the first sentence so far ;-)

  12. MORTAL HEART MORTAL HEART MORTAL HEART ANYAAAAAAAAA

It is so good. It is unbelievably good. There is so much expanding on the world building and all three of the girls are together a LOT (my favorite thing) and it’s just the best conclusion I could have asked for. I mean, I obviously want MORE from this world, but as a trilogy, it ended it beautifully.

    • Oooooo awesome!!! I really loved the extra info about the world/magic/saints we got in Dark Triumph, so that’s even more exciting :D

  13. Baby griffins?! :D A fun MG might be just what the doctor ordered, and I’m so glad you’re enjoying All Our Yesterdays! And Pennyroyal sounds good, too. Congrats on finishing the evil project and a great reading week!

    • BABY GRIFFINS! Oh man, so many fun middle grade that I want to push on you, though Castle Glower is my favorite mg series I think ;-)

  14. It’s great when middle grade novels have a plot that’s intriguing even for adults. That’s when I feel that they’ve really succeeded. I’m jealous of your assignements. Mine are usually all or nothing. Teachers dock a lot of points if we don’t finish them, no matter how small some parts are.
Hellen recently posted…Review/Reseña – La conquista de Oxit – Carlos González SosaMy Profile

    • Agreed! I worry that the reason some kids stop reading for fun is because the plots we give them are too simplistic D:

Urgh, that’s super frustrating and doesn’t seem like how assignments should be graded at all :(
