Updates from the Lair

This week has been both crappy and fairly productive. I’m switching migraine medications and weaning off the previous one is causing horrible insomnia. I haven’t slept for more than a couple hours in a row in about a week D: This does mean I got a lot of books finished, but my body has now decided that not sleeping is a problem. The cold I’ve been fighting for the past two weeks is freaking kicking my butt. I just really want October to be over now, please? But on less ranty notes, books!

My Week

Seraphina

Since I finished my previous audiobook Reboot, I started up Seraphina this week! This one has been sitting on my shelf since last year when Angelya gave it to be for Christmas and I felt so bad that I hadn’t gotten to it yet. It’s dragons! That should have been insta-read D: To remedy this and keep my hardcover in perfect condition, I got it on Audible and have been listening to it. I actually started listening to it for a bit last year, but then Days of Blood and Starlight came out so I had to switch to listening to that. So I’m repeating a bit, but it’s nice to get back into the world. I hadn’t liked the narration previously, but it’s grown on me :D.

Iron Traitor

I also am reading Iron Traitor as fast as I can so that I can review it this week! It’s only okay so far, but I’m hopeful ;-). Does anyone else feel like Ethan can be really freaking sexist sometimes? He’s all obsessed with protecting the girls even though they both want to make their own decisions…. *sigh*

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

We discussed our Top Ten Favorite character names for this week’s TTT.

I’m giving away a SIGNED copy of Allegiant!

I asked NetGalley’s Tarah some questions about the feedback to approval ratio and got lots of great information!

The Lost Prince got 3 stars: original creatures but only okay dialogue.

I got a couple of signed Allegiant copies and some library books for Spoils and Tribute.

  2. I agree completely about old posts! I occasionally consider deleting mine, but feel like they’re part of my blogs history and so far have decided to keep them. Any language in a review is fine with me as long as it’s funny without being crude. However, I expect everyone draws that line at a different place, so I personally avoid profanity too.

    • Yeah, we’ll just pretend they don’t exist >.> Maybe someday I’ll try to fix them up *sigh*

With the cussing, I’m becoming more and more conflicted since sometimes I do want to swear a bit to add personality to a post, we’ll see though :-/

  3. I bought Seraphina a long time ago and STILL haven’t read even though a lot of my friends adore it. So don’t feel bad. Ha! Thanks for linking to us!

    • That is why audiobooks are the best. It’s time that I can’t read anything and would just be listening to the radio anyway, so I don’t stress about how long it would take :D

  5. I have two friends that have migranes and I know how much they suffer. I hope the new meds work better for you!

I am off to check out some of those links!

    • Thanks! I’m lucky that I don’t get all the crazy visual symptoms, just blinding pain and light sensitivity *sigh* So far so good on the new medication though!

  6. Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads says:

Aww, being sicks sucks. I hope you are able to get some sleep and fight off that cold soon!

I also can’t believe you haven’t read Seraphina yet! I guess I got that one from NetGalley, so read it pretty much right away.. it’s pretty awesome! And DRAGONS!!

I agree that Ethan is a bit sexist in wanting to take care of the girls, but I can also kind of understand since they are both kind of dying in a way. But yeah, I am eager to see what you think of the cliffhanger!!

Hope you feel better soon and have a great week!

    • I know! I’m really enjoying listening to it though :D And seeing all the posts about how it deals with discrimination just made me more excited since I love fantasy books with good messages. And yes, dragons!!! I think I decided I wanted to save it for when I was really craving a good dragon fantasy, but I should really accept that I have to just prioritize books otherwise they will never get read!

Just finished Iron Traitor! I have to admit that the cliffhanger disappointed me, since I mean, we kind of know that something has to happen since there’s another book right?

      • Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads says:

True..lol I’m wondering what’s going to happen though. He heard hoofbeats, so maybe Ash and Meghan are on their way? I just couldn’t believe Keirran would do that to family.. but yeah.. he’s fey I guess.

  7. kelpeterson says:

Aww, I hope you iron out the meds and can start sleeping again soon! And good luck with that cold! (I’m feeling the beginnings of one myself and praying it doesn’t last near as long as the last.)

I’ll be interested to see your thoughts on “Seraphina” when you finish. Someone recommended it to me ages ago — and I usually jump at fantasy like that — but I only just read it earlier this year. I may wait for your thoughts on “The Queen’s Thief,” too. People have been raving about that for years and I still haven’t picked it up; not entirely sure why either.

    Ah well, feel better!

    • Thanks! I’m feeling much better today and managed to sleep fairly well last night. I’m hoping for another good nights rest so that I can start getting caught up with everything I didn’t do this weekend ;-)

Hehe, I know how that goes! I even go so far as to buy books like that because I know I want to read them eventually, but it takes so long for them to make it to the top of the pile!

I hope you’re not getting sick!

  8. So excited to see that you’re reading Seraphina! I can’t believe you haven’t read it yet, because yes — dragons!! I am dying to know what you think of it, so hopefully you’ll review it soonish? :D

    • Hehe, I know right?? I think it was one of those hype cases where I got so excited but then afraid of it D: I will definitely be reviewing it as soon as I finish it, though it’s hard for me to tell how long audiobooks will take since it depends on how much listening time I have, haha

      • Yeah, I’m curious to know how the audiobook is, as well. Female narrator, I assume? This is one of those books that just blew me away with the beautiful writing/language, so I’m wondering how well that translates into an audio version.
Kelley (Another Novel Read) recently posted…Things I Think About – Part IV: Signed BooksMy Profile

        • Yup female narrator, though I can’t place her accent. It’s kind of British I guess but not one that rings a bell as to what it’s label is ;-). At first that threw me, but now I’m liking it since it makes the medieval fantasy setting sink in more :D

  9. I loved the disscussion posts you shared they were so informative, not to mention your explantion/interview on Netgalley’s approval rating, it was very helpfull

    • Gah *hides* D: ;-) I own the first book because my bookseller friend put it in my hand and told me I had to buy it, haha. It’s in the read asap pile next to the couch, I swear! I just need to get through two review books coming out next week and I should be in the clear to read some older books :D

  11. I am so glad you post these, specifically when it comes to the discussions about blogging in general. I would have never known how to set up Commentlov the correct way, and you seem to find something important like that weekly.
