Updates from the Lair 11/02/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Seeing as I’m writing this post at 1am, life is apparently abnormal this week. Pain+addictive reads lead to trying to sleep at a normal time and then giving up and reading until 4am and then sleeping til noon once I figured out a position that was comfortable to sleep. I feel very lucky that grad school in my current semester is flexible enough for me to do that this week, but it means that I got very little done. I also had major referral insurance frustrations so instead of getting treatment on Thursday, it got pushed back to Monday and I have to makeup a midterm and blah blah blah more stress. In any case, I’ve been reading absolutely awesome books, I just might not have posts every day this week and I hope you won’t hate me for it ;-).

My Week in Books

Beware the Wild I started Beware the Wild as my eARC this week to try to get October all finished up even though it turned out to be November suddenly >.>. I am very excited by the spooky crazy start, but haven’t had the chance to get much further. I think I should just power through one evening since I don’t think it’ll be a good book to read before bed ;-).

The Bone Season I agreed with Micheline to buddy read The Bone Season together so that we are both motivated to get a non-review book read so that we can read Mime Order with everyone :D. I’m in the middle of chapter five even though we were only planning on reading the first couple of chapters. I can already say that I had no idea that it would be like this and whoa! I would be worried that things would just be absolutely crazy and nonsense if I didn’t have very good recommendations :D.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)
Dreamer's Pool The Name of the Blade Hammered The Assassin's Blade Red Glove

Dreamer’s Pool will be my next eARC because it sounds AMAZING and I just feel the need to be caught up with October before diving into November ;-). The Name of the Blade will be my next physical ARC since it’s a November release date and I’ll probably read it in between my Bone Season read-a-long. I’m trying to decide on my next audiobook and can’t decide between Hammered, The Assassin’s Blade, or Red Glove. They’re all sequels so basically I just can’t decide which series to continue with at the moment. If you have a recommendation for an audiobook you think I’d like other than these, let me know, I haven’t bought anything yet ;-). Or anything from my To-Listen shelf you have thoughts on?

Happy Reading!

  1. I have had Beware the Wild on my TBR list since I first heard about it a few years ago. I got to meet Natalie when she was with Tessa Gratton & Karen Mahoney at a blogger gathering and she told us about it.

I really enjoyed The Assassins Blade and I have Red Glove waiting to be read.

My haul can be found here

  2. Sorry to hear that your back is still giving you so much pain! It sounds horrible :/

I think I read Red Glove a few years back (although I don’t remember the plot well…) but I wish they hadn’t changed the covers; the old ones were so much cooler!

    • So agreed about the Curse Workers covers! I have mismatching signed books now and I just don’t know what to do about it D:

  3. I’m sorry to hear about your bad week. :( Hopefully it picks up now that it’s a new week, but pain – especially while trying to sleep – is one of the worst things in my opinion. I really love my sleep so when it’s interrupted I get very annoyed.

I’ve heard quite a few things about The Bone Season so hopefully it’s a good book! I highly recommend reading The Assassin’s Blade first, but that’s mostly because I’m uber biased about this series. ;D

  4. Oh man, I’m sorry things with your back are still so rough :| I hope the doctor went well today and you’ll be feeling better soon. I also have fallen behind with school work this week – mainly because life got in the way. I’m sure my advisor wont appreciate that excuse, but it is what it is… As for book recommendations – I haven’t listened to it, but I had a blast reading the Assassin’s Blade. They’re great stories and really flow like one actually. Whatever you pick, I hope you enjoy!

    • The injection went pretty darn well in that it hurt like hell but that means they got the right spot *sigh* hopefully I’ll be feeling better soon, haha. Ugh, LIFE is so annoying! I feel very lucky that I can just tell my advisor that my back is going crazy again and he doesn’t get mad at me, very very lucky!

  5. Pick Hammered, it’s so good!

I hope you can get your treatment tomorrow; insurance can be such a nuisance. Good luck!

    • Exam done! Might not have done the best I could, but oh well :D And I just started Dreamer’s Pool *feels so accomplished already*

  9. Hammered! Yes! Such a good read!

    • Just downloaded it :D No Oberon yet though, there should really be a rule that Oberon must appear in the first few minutes of each book >.>

  10. Feel better soon, and good luck on the midterm! Beware the Wild sounds interesting. The Bone Season I almost put down in the first chapter, but it sounds like you’re enjoying it thus far. :)

    • Just finished the midterm, ugh! I’m a good test taker and did even have time to answer all the questions!!!!

I’m not running into any typos so far in the paperback of the Bone Season fortunately, but it is definitely a weird one, ha

  11. Ugggggh. That’s too bad about insurance frustrations. Why does it have to be such a hassle to get ourselves back to 100% healthwise? :( Hope things smooth out for you soon and your back starts feeling better.

No worries about the frequency of posts this week. Whenever you get around to them is whenever you get around to them. Take care of yourself first!

    • Haha, so true, though at this point I’m aiming for like 80% health ;-). Monday did go smoothly though fortunately!

  12. Oh Anya, I’m so sorry to hear you’re still in such pain! Can’t imagine what it must be like to live with that. On a more cheerful note, Beware the Wild sounds so cool! I’m waiting till more books in the Bone Season series comes out, because with complex world like that I don’t want to wait longer than a year in between books. Happy reading!
