Updates from the Lair

Hello lovely people! This was a really weird week since I was caught in the huge storms and ended up with Monday and Tuesday off from work and school. I couldn’t even work from home on Tuesday because the computing cluster that I use had to be shut down, haha. So, I joined Bout of Books on the last day sign ups were open and spent a couple of quality reading days ;-). I literally didn’t go outside for almost two days, and then went out briefly on Tuesday to try to find  UPS package that had been left “on the porch” of my apartment building *sigh*. That is a whole other annoying story…. Anyway, package found, books read, work productive once I got back to it. Overall a good week! And now it’s raining, like literally about 32 degrees rain….

My Week

Black Dog So I started and finished Black Dog this week, going along with my goal of getting all the February review books done. Ugh this book. It was just so freaking boring. I was so excited about the premise of a Mexican MC and a twist on the traditional werewolf stories, but the writing was just so plodding that I couldn’t even care during the action scenes. People were being eviscerated and I just shrugged! I didn’t really connect with the characters, everything was quite predictable and the world was not nearly as well explored as I was wanting. I’m just glad to be done, honestly….

Cruel Beauty

I also read Cruel Beauty and loved it! I read it in about two days even though I was supposed to be buddy reading >.> *buddy fail*. My love mostly comes from the darker aspect of this retelling and Nyx. I 100% connected with and understood Nyx. She is so damaged and wonderful and I just want to hug her. I’m not really a big Beauty and the Beast person (I like it fine, but I’ve only ever seen the Disney movie), so I’m not sure how well it stuck to the fairytale, but I loved it as a fantasy story of its own!

Queen of Tearling

Finally, I just started Queen of the Tearling on Wednesday to read with a group of bloggy friends. Unfortunately, none of us could spend much time on it and everyone else is bailing on my ;-). I might continue it this week or I might switch to a February book instead (since this one is July, haha). I’m really liking it so far since there is a lot of mystery and intrigue in this fantasy world, so we’ll see ;-).

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Spoils

Bibliopunkk decided that she and I need to read at least the first book of the really good adult spec-fic series that we haven’t had time for yet. Therefore, she told me to buy these three books and we are going to read them together throughout this year! I don’t remember what other series are on the list, but there are more, no worries ;-). Then I went a little crazy on YA Book Exchange and traded for several books I’ve been meaning to get for a while. First, I spotted Expiration Day and was like omg need! Then, I’ve been meaning to read Scorched since Dragons! And finally, I had the other two books of the trilogy and now my Across the Universe trilogy is complete and ready for me to burn through at some point :D.

Tribute

Bibliopunkk also brought home some boxes of ARCs and told me to look through and see if I wanted any of them, so I grabbed all the spec-fic ones I could find ;-). I’m most excited about that Lady Thief ARC since I lurve that book so much and the cover is so pretty!

Rebel Words of Radiance

Finally, Harper put Rebel up on Edelweiss, which I of course had to immediately download because I’m so pumped about this sequel :D. I keep wanting to jump into it, but I should try to get more February review books read first >.>. Most exciting, I was granted access to an rather early e-copy of Words of Radiance so that I can review it before the pub date. I’m so excited to jump straight into that one once I send out the questions for the last week of the Way of Kings read-along ;-).

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

Falls the Shadow Storm Riders Wakeworld

While I’m not a fan of the cover and impossible-to-read title, Falls the Shadow looks like a creepy, awesome sci-fi where family members have clones in waiting in case something happens to one of them, you can just pick up the clone to replace them and never worry about death. I’m intrigued! Then I spotted a review of Storm Riders and had to add it and the first book to the list because it’s dragons and Margaret Weis! Finally, I was invited to the Wakeworld tour and I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll be able to do a review for it because it’s UF with dragons and a woman in an actually strong pose on the cover!

Next Week’s Reading

Mitosis Burn Bright The Waking Engine

Now for this coming week, I’m thinking I’m going to try to sneak in Mitosis since it’s a Reckoners short story and I’m so excited for the second book to come out. Plus, I decided to spring and actually buy the novella, so I have to read it ;-). Then Burn Bright is next up on the February review books list, so I’ll try to get through that quickly. I was only meh about the first book, so we’ll see how that goes. Finally, I’ll be starting a buddy read of Waking Engine on Wednesday and I hear it’s a great adult sci-fi :D.

Happy Reading!

  1. I’m so glad you enjoyed Cruel Beauty! I also loved the Dark Aspects, and I really wasn’t expecting all the Greek mythology!
You got Scorched! I really love the sound of that one and want to get to it some time later this year! I also need to read Scarlet so I can read Lady Thief. I love the premise of this book and I’ve seen so many great reviews!
Oh, and I think I own the German edition of Nightlife! Haven’t read it yet though.
Thanks so much for stopping by last weekend, and happy reading :)

    • Hehe, I’m hoping that now that Scorched is sitting on my shelf I’ll get to it sooner! That’s always my plan at least >.>

  2. Oh man now I’m freaking got the ingoing bias with Black Dog….ahhhh. I am still hoping. While you and I share the same tastes sometimes we are so far all the mark with what we enjoy. Though I do have to tell you in good news I’ve retried Cracked by Eliza and have been enjoying it much more now since I had set it aside before.

    • Aw, I’m sorry! D: It might just be a personality thing that I didn’t connect for some reason ;-)

Yey, I’m glad to hear that!!

  3. I’m curious. With all this reading, how do you manage any semblance of a social life? Major time management skills? ;)

    • Mwahaha, short answer: I don’t >.>. I see my boyfriend on the weekends since he lives two hours away, and otherwise I don’t really do much during the week as far as social life goes. I hang out with friends every one or two weeks usually <.< So really I just read in the evenings during the week and I'm okay with that ;-)

  4. I’m really looking forward to both Cruel Beauty and Words of Radiance. I’ll be excited to read your reviews :)

    • Woot! You won’t have to wait too long for Cruel Beauty’s review either since I’m sneaking it in to make the pub date, haha

  5. Greywalker is awesome! I read it recently and loved it. The second book in the series was a total let down though, and I even DNF’d it. Byt Greywalker is good.

    • I feel horrible since I haven’t had a chance to read Unremembered yet D: I’m thinking a giveaway might be a good plan ;-)

  8. I really enjoyed Cruel Beauty, I thought it was gorgeously written and the story and romance totally sucked me in.

Oh wow! You got some pretty fantastic books! :)

Wow, looks like you got a lot of books this past week.. Enjoy them all!

Your weather sounds like mine. It was super cold for a few day and now it’s just raining (except we didn’t really get that much more snow here, but there is about 4 feet of snow already, so we don’t need anymore.). Nice little January thaw going on right now..lol

Have a great week and I hope you enjoy the books you’re planning on reading!

  10. Wow. Congrats on the ‘Words of Radiance’ early access. You just made a lot of bloggers very jealous.
