Updates from the Lair 11/16/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

First off, I’ve been nominated in the Best Sci-fi and Fantasy category for the Book Blog Awards and so would love for you to go check out all the nominees (in all the other categories that interest you too!) and vote for who you’d like to vote for ;-).

But now that that’s over, hmmm this week was… average? I had productive days and unproductive days but overall am feeling pretty good with the blog, reading, and work/class. I’ve started bringing our lab blog back from the dead, which has been fun to transfer all the skills I’ve learned from this blog to that since blogging and social media is becoming big in science as well now. I feel like I’ve finally started hitting that wall where I’m reading more than I can write reviews for mostly because I’ve been in the mood for reading instead of review writing >.>. I just need to have a productive blogging weekend to catch up really, but the weekends have been a bit… not that, ha. I’ve gotten really into nail polish all of a sudden, I think due to the lack of color in Michigan this time of year, hehe.

My Week in Books

Hammered I finished my last audio and started Hammered for real this week! (I got the audio of Dreamer’s Pool to review, so I switched to that last week >.>). I wasn’t into the getting Edun’s apples thing at the beginning but have gotten past that and into the “we’re in deep shit” part of the book and am highly entertained and intrigued that Hearne is really doing this to his main character!

Illusions of Fate I haven’t made much progress on Illusions of Fate but that that I have read has been awesome! I’m at the omg creepy crows everywhere part and am SO horrified and wondering what the hell is going on. So far, I’m thinking this might be a five star book :D. I love White so much, but wow, Illusions of Fate goes way beyond her previous series in terms of imagination and awesome characters.

Burn for Me I have mostly been reading Burn for Me and first off: IGNORE THE COVER! It really doesn’t capture the book at all, since the book is urban fantasy and not paranormal romance at all. I’m almost done and there has been no sex for example. The world Ilona Andrews has built is completely awesome and different than her previous two series and so far I’m also highly recommending this one. I just really wish the cover would properly represent the heroine and the character dynamics, sigh.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Oh man, how do I say this: I have way way way too many exciting ARCs to read. I will have all Monday afternoon to read as long as I’m not too drugged out from my last steroid injections. I am planning on reading the first chapter of each of these and proceed whichever catches my mood properly (and in this order because one is a review book and the other two are borrowed…)

The Name of the Blade Firefight Court of Thorns and Roses

Yes, I realize the ridiculous of this predicament and really don’t mean to be ridiculous. I seriously want to take a day off work and do nothing but read, and just wish it was a time in the term when I could do that…. The Name of the Blade is a book Candlewick kindly sent when they ran out at BEA, so I really want to be polite and give it a try if nothing else. I’ll then just see if I’m in more of a dystopian-superheroes mood or a dark-fantasy-retelling mood ya know? And don’t freak, Court of Thorns and Roses is borrowed from a friend who is a bookseller, so that’s how I got so lucky as to borrow it.

Happy Reading!

  1. Im retry sure I have Illusions of Fate on my TBR pile. I’m scared to start Ilonas new books, I love her Kate Daniels series but I’m scared I won’t like this one as much.

    • Yeah to be honest I didn’t like Burn for Me as much as Kate, sigh, but I’ll still be reading book two since the world is cool!

  2. Congrats on being nominated! :)

I know how you feel, sometimes I just want to read and not thing about reviewing. I totally thought Burn for me was romance too, thanks for letting me know otherwise. I’ve heard good things about Dreamer’s pool.

I am so jealous that you have Court of Thorn and Roses already!

    • Thanks :D

Dreamer’s Pool was so very excellent, highly recommended :D I feel very lucky to be able to borrow Court of Thorns and Roses, I’m just hoping not too many people hate me *hides*

  3. Congratulations on the nomination! You most definitely deserve it! :D

    Wanting to read instead of write reviews? Yeah, that’s pretty much me all the time. I am trying to make sure I at least jot down a few notes when I finish a book so I’m not staring at a blank page when I finally get around to it. But I don’t always do that either. ^^;

I just finished Illusions of Fate last night! I haven’t read any of White’s other work, but I really enjoyed this one. :)

    • Thanks dear!!! :D

Oh yes, I have my post-it notes with my pros and cons right away since that doesn’t take much time, it’s just the typing them up and remembering what my random shorthand meant that’s the hard part >.>

Yey! I really liked In the Shadows and Mind Games, she just has a very fast and fun writing style :D

  4. Court of Thorns and Roses – ahhhh now that I wish I could get my blasted hands on! Oh the torment that I know I’ll have to wait lol. So see here I feel your jealousy on the times when I see others getting a book I know I would read immediately. I wills be patient I will.

I’m finally reading today and yesterday – could this be some of my groove is coming back?

    • I started it! I’m being good! If I get my hands on a copy that I can keep I will be letting you know ;-)

      Go reading groove go!

  5. How exciting that you were nominated for a blog award – I’ll be sure to check it out and vote! I need a productive weekend to get caught up too – I’m trying to do that right now, though it’s one day, not a weekend. I just love the cover for A Court of Thorns and Roses, so I vote for that one. Oh and how cool that you get to work on the labs blog – I think it’s neat when blog skills help out in our “real” lives. Good luck with the injection tomorrow – hope you have a great week!

    • Thanks! I hope your weekend was more productive than mine D: I don’t know where the time went, but I didn’t have anything to show for it!

  6. Name of the Blade I am interested in, for some reason I have followed the author on twitter forever despite never reading her stuff.

    • Haha, that’s like me with John Scalzi’s blog! Name of the Blade is still woefully waiting for me and I’m a little nervous after reading the author’s discussion of insta-love done right in this book, but I’ll still have to give it a bit of a try!

  7. Congrats on the nomination, Anya!! Totally deserved. :) I’m almost finished Burn For Me, too!! And holy crap on a cracker is it ever awesome. It gives me that giddy excellent book feeling, you know? Gotta love that signature Ilona Andrews wit! Completely agree about the cover…somebody was asleep on the job for that one.

    • Aw thanks :D

I really loved the world for Burn for Me but got kind of cranky about the romance I must admit >.> But gah, yeah that cover *sigh*

  8. Creepy cows?? I’d ask more questions, but I doubt you’d want to give much away. What genre is “Illusions of Fate”?

Btw, I voted for you. ;) And glad to hear you’re continuing to feel better!

    • Illusions of Fate is what I’d call historical fantasy. Set in a historical time period, but with hidden magic and possibly not our world to begin with :D

      Thanks!!

  9. About Illusions of Fate—creepy cows you say? I had to double check that it was on my TBR. (It was).

I think you’re a fantastic blogger. You have one of the only blogs that I visit consistently and look at you post even after it’s been emailed to me.

I would like to partner with you do do something…but I have no idea what. But I think it would be awesome.

    • Did I type cows??? Oh no, good, crows :D

Awwwwwww, thank you!!!!!!! I’m totally up for doing an event together, I’ve been thinking that some sort of week-long reading event would be fun, but can’t decide on anything, hehe.
