Updates from the Lair

Blarghity, blargh, blargh… Those are words right? So there wasn’t an updates post last week because Mr. Boy decided to go on a rather sudden trip back home to Minnesota and I wasn’t going to let that crazy kook go on his own! This week has therefore been a lovely game of catch-up, trying to get the homework done that I had been planning to do last weekend, and all that fun stuff. Fortunately, I had all my blog posts for the week already scheduled so that was one less thing to do ;-). I also decided a week ago that I wanted to start seeing a personal trainer and get serious about getting back into shape. My back has been troubling me a lot lately and I’ve convinced myself that getting my strength back will help support everything ya know? Therefore, on Thursday I had my first personal training session involving lots of squats and planks and weight-lifting. I’m soooooooo sore, but also happy because I like being sore from working hard instead of sore from feeling broken. I build muscle pretty quickly, so I’m hoping that within a couple of months I’ll start seeing results ;-). Then I’ll be the Hulk rawr! Anyway >.>.

My Week

Bitterblue I finished Seraphina while walking last week, so this week I’ve started Bitterblue on audio :D. I’m sad since Bitterblue isn’t full-cast audio and Graceling was, so the voices are completely different for Katsa and Po, but I’m getting used to them and I love Bitterblue’s voice :). I’m really enjoying this story, especially the puzzles aspect, and am quite excited to figure out how all the puzzle pieces fit together with Bitterblue. Also, I feel quite accomplished finally finishing this trilogy, haha!

I also got to start Touch of Power this week! I was approved for Taste of Darkness after pending for months, so now I need to get my butt in gear to be able to review that one on time. I’m really hoping that the cover’s promise of using lilies to add to Avry’s magic isn’t just leading me on >.>. Also, I don’t like Kerrick.

Finally, I’m reading Avalon with my book group and enjoying the hell out of it! It’s reminding me a lot of These Broken Stars in enjoyability and creepiness factors :D. There is just something so awesome about creepy space mysteries and Avalon is succeeding at that element majorly. It also has a male MC, which normally isn’t in the book’s favor for me, but it’s working out quite well! I got this one through EW and definitely suggest requesting it!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

So I’m going to be switching things up a bit this week and focusing only on discussions because I’m starting a new feature to discuss reviews later in the week :D. Come back on Friday to check it out <3

I was lucky enough to snag a con-edition of Brandon Sanderson’s two novellettes, but now he’s selling them in his online store, so you can snag them too!

Gillian has compiled an awesome list of YA books to convert YA doubters. I especially approve of the fantasy and sci-fi sections showing just how awesome YA SFF can be!

I stumbled across this guide to giveaways from Pink Heels, Pink Truck. Even though she is a lifestyle blogger, the info definitely applies to us book bloggers! The FTC guidelines kind of piss me off with how they are specifying some things, but shrugs….

Parajunkee helped us out this week to make sure our blogs are secure with some WordPress plugins that all us WP-users should have!

Christina is trying to convince us all to take a chance with audiobooks and I couldn’t agree more (even if she doesn’t like my favorite narrator ;-) )

Kimberly is doing a Christmas Card Exchange :D

Happy Reading!

  1. Well GO YOU! Getting in shape is such a challenge (especially for me!) so I wish you all the best with that! It can really work wonders on your overall health and well-being. I also giggled at your Hulk Rawr :D

DYING to get into the Touch series, the Graceling books AND Avalon, you have some amazing reads going on lately, WOW.

    • Thanks :D I’m really hoping that it does help my health since my back has been having so many issues :(

I must admit that I just finished Avalon and it was a bit disappointing, I actually just fell asleep at 90%….

  2. I’ve wanted to read Touch of Power for a while now, so I’m excited to read you review. Great job working out! I’m sure it will get easier :)

    • Read it! I found it quite enjoyable :D Thanks! I’m sure it will too since I’ve done this whole thing before, just wish I hadn’t let it slide so that it didn’t hurt now, haha

  3. Go go personal training! I’ve really been wanting to get into lifting for a while, but I live in the boondocks so I don’t have a good choice of gyms.

I’m debating requesting Avalon. I heard it described as BSG somewhere, which has me super excited.

  4. Hah, I recently had to make an impromptu trip with my husband too! Those men of ours! :)

And oooh thanks for pointing out that Sanderson’s selling those novellettes now! :D

  5. Pink Heels has tons of great information. I am guessing since she just got back from bloggy boot camp she will probably have tons more. I am sad I missed it this year :)

  6. Personal trainers are awesome. They push you to do some much more than you think you can do. If I had the money, I’d totally invest in a personal trainer.

    • Indeed! I like mine since he’s still quite nice too, I don’t like yelling >.> Definitely expensive though, I’m not sure what I’m going to do once I use up the eight sessions I bought to begin with….

  7. I bought a paperback copy of Graceling a few months ago and STILL haven’t gotten to it! I’m a horrible person, yes I know. But I am starting Avalon soon, and you have taken my hopes attached them to a rocket and sent them into space! These Broken Stars is my 2nd favorite book of the year, and if Avalon is truly anything like it I may just die from all the awesome.

Good luck with the PT! :D

    • I completely understand! Bitterblue was sitting on my shelf waaaay longer than that!

Hehe, I hope that I didn’t push them too high, it’s not quite as good, and I just hit a big plot twist, but it has some similar creepy fascinating space feels ;-)

  8. Hope you’re enjoying Bitterblue! I haven’t heard the audio version, but I loved the novel! :)

Glad to hear that Avalon’s good so far, it looks like a great story.

    • I have actually listened to the whole trilogy on audio which amuses me, but I’m so enjoying it! Bitterblue is my fav character so far I think, haha.

Ah, exercise – that thing we should be doing, but don’t. Congrats on starting on it with the personal trainer! I hope you see results quickly. :)

Looking forward to your thoughts on Bitterblue and Avalon. I read Graceling and wasn’t thrilled enough to read the next book, but I’ve heard the third is interesting. And Avalon sounds kind of awesome.

Good luck catching up on that homework!

    • Hehe, so true! I was doing really well for a while there and then life happened, sigh. Once I can actually use my legs without pain I’ll go back to the gym!

I recommend giving Fire a try since it’s a companion novel and set in a completely different part of the world, new characters, all of it.

      • The gym … that mystical place I’ve never been but should probably visit daily ;)

I might try Fire. I remember really liking the main character in Graceling, but my star count dropped when she suddenly became a different person for a while in the middle of the book.

  10. New feature huh? Can you give us a hint on what to expect?
