Updates from the Lair 1/17/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

What a week it has been! As I discussed yesterday, my back has been giving me a whole lot more trouble this week and I’m back on some pretty heavy dose pain meds, woohoo! I worked late pretty much every night this week except when the boy drove out to see me on Wednesday :D. Normally we don’t see each other in the middle of the week, so that was exciting. He has moved to 12-hour night shifts where he works two days, has two off, works three days, has two off, etc. This means he’s working every other weekend, so I was on my own this weekend for the first time since I started grad school! If my back wasn’t hurting so much, I would have been crazy productive, but as it was I got some fun bloggy things caught up on and read some books :D. I don’t even have to be sad about missing him since he has Monday off so I’ll see him then :D. Oh and I started class and TAing >.>. Which are both going quite well ;-).

Also I feel the need to put in a plug for the electronic pulse massager I’ve been using on my back because it is AMAZING. My muscles keep spasming and cramping because of my back being messed up and this thing sends little electrical shocks to reset them just like my physical therapist does when I see her on bad days. If you get muscle spasms, you seriously have to try this thing!

My Week

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. MaasAmusingly, the two books that I had planned to start this week after finishing my current reads are the ones I ended up reading and finishing >.>. So I finished Crown of Midnight this weekend (which is good since it is expired!) and while I wasn’t blown away by it (4.5 average rating on Goodreads?????), I do see why so many people enjoy this series now ;-). Celaena definitely is less annoying and the magic in the world is getting cool. I have yet to form a strong emotional connection with this series, but they are enjoyable and easy enough that I’ll continue with them, haha.

Calling on DragonsHaha, so this is not the cover for Calling on Dragons that my edition has, but I couldn’t resist using it since there really is a flying donkey in it :D. This was the other book that I said I’d start last week and look, I started and finished it :D. Since this week was pretty hard, a fun middle grade was really all my brain was up for at times, ha. I didn’t laugh as much as I did with the first two books, but I had fun and that’s all I really needed.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

A Court of Thorns and Roses Night Shift The Boy Who Lost Fairyland

All right ducks, this is the week where I really truly finish the books I’ve been “currently reading” for too damn long! I’m going to try to power through Night Shift this weekend since I won’t be doing anything else! Then I’ll finally continue to make progress on A Court of Thorns and Roses so that I can have a fun giveaway for you all as soon as I finish ;-). It took me a while to get back to a mood where I knew I’d enjoy ACoTaR, but I am now :D. Finally, I just got an eARC of The Boy Who Lost Fairyland for the blog tour, so that’ll be my e-book and I’m so so sosososososo excited!

Happy Reading!

  1. ALL I SEE IS THAT FAIRYLAND BOOK. I so badly want to finish that series but I’ve only read the first book. Anyways, I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR BOOKS

  2. Yay for fun middle grade! I’m in that same boat of having been “currently reading” at least one book for way too long. I’m debating between DNF’ing, putting it aside and coming back to it since it doesn’t release for a while, and just stubborning my way through now so it’s done. ;)

  3. Oh man, I’m sorry to see that your back has been acting up so bad *hugs* but YAY for reading, TAing and boy visits :D Glad you (somewhat) came around to Celaena in CoM (like Alise^^ I think HoF is even better – tons more magic and world-building) and can’t wait to see what you think of ACOTAR!!!!!!

  4. I’m really eager to hear your thoughts on A Court of Thorns and Roses because it’s one of those few books that made my most anticipating list for 2015 and you’re definitely a reviewer that I trust. And chances are I’ll scoop it up when it releases if you’re a fan. [:

    Happy reading!

    • One of these days I’ll find time to actually read a big chunk of it, ha, but so far I’m really liking it! I think I like Maas’ writing better this time around than in Throne of Glass.

  5. Glad the TAing is going well and that you got to see your guy! A Court of Thorns and Roses *screams forever* I hope you like it lots! I can’t wait till it comes out. I loved Throne of Glass but definitely agree that Crown of Midnight showed a lot of improvement. Heir of Fire blew me away, the books just get better!

  8. I’m glad that you liked Celaena more in CoM! I didn’t like her all that much in book 1 either–she wasn’t kick ass at all, contrary to what we were told in the book but she definitely warmed up to me in CoM. I hope you continue to like her more over the instalments!

    Have a lovely week <33

  9. Hmm. I’m going to have to check out that elec pulse massager!! Thanks for sharing!!

  10. Sounds good that Celaena is less annoying in Crown of Midnight! I finished Throne of Glass but am not sure yet if I should continue the series. There are things I like a lot about the book but also some that are really annoying. I might give it a chance though :)

  11. I am sorry to hear your back is hurting so much, I hope the pain meds work a bit. I DNF’d ‘Throne of Glass, but I did hear from a few reader who didn’t love the first boook who liked the first book either, but I don’t think I am going to give it another try.
Hope you have a great week week!

    • The pain meds have definitely helped fortunately! I was close to DNFing Throne of Glass, but Crown of Midnight did improve somewhat. Probably not worth slogging through book one for you though!

  12. I loved Crown of Midnight and I have A Court of Thorns & Roses waiting to be read myself. I love the cover for Calling on Dragons :)

Enjoy your books and my haul can be found here

  13. A flying donkey? Well, that caught my attention, lol.

I’m glad the electronic pulse massager is helping; back problems are evil. Good luck with your back and your teaching.

  14. Woo-hoo! Finally you kind of like Throne of Glass! Did you read instead of listen? I’m curious if that was a big part of it or if you just liked the story better. Crown of midnight is my favorite so far – 5 stars for me!

That’s neat that your boy’s schedule is so changing, that will provide yall with a variety of different times together, instead of the same weekend days! Glad that massager is working out, I hope the pain is less this week! Have a great one Anya!
