Updates from the Lair 1/19/14

Updates from the Lair
Hi! This week has been a really good week in a lot of ways, so that’s nice! It got off to a rocky start since I didn’t really sleep at all Monday night. I went to bed around 11pm and then woke up at 2am completely awake…. I then finished a book, started a second book and finally tried to sleep some more around 5am *sigh*. Anyway! I got invited to two blog tours (for Wakeworld and The Waking Engine), so I’m really excited about all the cool stuff that’ll be going on in February around here :D. I also submitted my first abstract which is stage 1 of submitting my first peer-reviewed paper (in academia, peer-reviewed papers are life; they determine whether you get hired, promoted, etc. Getting my first one submitted is REALLY exciting :D). I’ve also made huge progress on a biology education simulation I’ve been working on so if you are interested in biology computer programs, I’d love to send you a copy of it and get your feedback :D.

My Week

*goes to check Goodreads to remember what she read* Right!

The Waking Engine by David Edison

I started The Waking Engine during that night of insomnia and OMG you guys, the writing! The description! The BEAUTY! If you read adult sci-fi, you MUST add this book. I am blown away by the idea of the City Unspoken and the metaverse and I can’t wait to find out what is going on with the Dying and the crazy nobility of an immortal city. I got an email about the blog tour for this one a day after I had started it and might have squeed in the middle of class >.>. The blog tour post is going to be epic, I can’t wait to share it with you all! Oh and there’ll be a giveaway :D. Gah, I’m so excited! This is such an amazing debut *spins around*.

Insurgent

Look, I’m making progress on my series too! I started the audiobook of Insurgent this week :D. It’s been fun getting back into this world and finding out what everyone is up to after that crazy ending in book one. My brain has been struggling a bit with audiobooks this week just because I’ve been working so much on school stuff that I need a break while driving, but I’ll keep making progress soon I’m sure ;-).

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Spoils

I traded for Toxic Heart and The Forbidden Library and they arrived this week! I requested Mystic City from the library but it hasn’t shown up yet, so I’ll have to wait to read those two *sigh*. However, I’m really excited to read The Forbidden Library since it’s middle grade fantasy about a library :D.

IMG_1380

I read Clean Sweep a bit ago (review to come), but it’s so pretty that I had to get a physical copy! Thinking of it now, I should have taken a picture of the front and back, there is a picture of the magic Inn on the back :D. Then The Barrow and Dragon Girl are both from the ARC box a friend got and she thought of me when she saw them ;-). The Barrow is adult epic fantasy it looks like, woot! Finally, Dragons of the Fallen Sun was ONE DOLLAR at the library. That’s right, nearly perfect hardcover brick of a book was $1! There was really no way to say no to that, haha.

Tribute

IMG_1381

Since I’m on the Wakeworld blog tour, I received copies of the first two of that series to read. Dragons! I’m excited, especially since they are so short I’ll probably read them in one sitting, haha. Finally, I had requested Dreamwalker a while ago and didn’t think I’d get it since I didn’t get an ARC, but then a pretty finished copy showed up so I’ll be trying to read that soon :D.

Night Broken The Immortal Crown The Foundry's Edge Prototype

I also got some awesome eARCs this week! I was so excited to be invited to the Night Broken eARC, so that is getting read asap. I also was pumped to see that Immortal Crown was up on Edelweiss along with Prototype, two sequels I’m really excited to read. Finally, The Foundry’s Edge has a weird cover but it looks like a cool middle grade fantasy from Disney, so whatever ;-).

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

The Ophelia Prophecy

Pabkins mentioned this one and I immediately had to make grabby hands at it! I’m not really sure how I missed it, I evidently need to stalk Tor’s catalogues better, haha.

Princess of Thorns

Sleeping Beauty retelling with girl-dressed-as-boy epic fighting???? It was hard not to request this one immediately, but December is still pretty far off >.> *waits*.

Unravel

I’m ridiculous since I haven’t read Linked yet, but I have a copy that I traded for, so I will! In the mean time, I’ll pet the pretty Unravel cover and get excited about the series continuing :D.

Next Week’s Reading

Mistwalker Between  Dreamwalker Mind Games

Theme of the week: walking. Not really, I’m just amused that there are walkers in two of the books ;-). I’m still trying to finish all my February review books before the end of January, so here are some of them that still need to be read (two of them being pre-review books). Which should I start first?? :D

Happy Reading!

  1. That’s how most fellowships works at my school too. I’m one of the few lucky ones that has no service requirements and can just TA to extend my funding. I’ve TAed twice and love the teaching aspect. Not doing it anymore because I moved away. I get the impression that living research is more important than loving teaching, since everyone like me seems to be miserable and everyone like you seems happy lol

  2. Oooh so excited for your review!

and I wish I loved Academia like that! If I did it would be a lit easier – I’ve invested so much time, that quitting feels wrong. I want to teach at the college level, but I would happily skip the research. So I’m torn. I LOVE teaching. I’m thankfully on fellowship, so at least I’m not wasting my money lol

    • Haha, so I actually haven’t done any teaching yet so I have no idea if I will like it >.> I like tutoring, but I love research, so currently it seems likely that I’d make a good research professor, but who knows?! I’m TAing next spring so I’ll get to find out :D Yey fellowships! I’m on a weird fellowship where my first and fifth year are free-rides, but I have to find funding in between, though I am guaranteed funding, ie, TAing, if I can’t find anything on my own *shrugs*

  3. 3rd year Medieval History – I’m taking my qualifying exams in May. Eeek! I don’t love it though, and I think there’s a VERY strong chance that I will quit before my PhD. I mean to do this, I think you have to love it and when I started I did, but the longer I’m in academia, the more I hate it (at least what I’m exposed to).

btw – I forgot to tell you I hate you! Lol ;) j/k but seriously – the latest Patricia Briggs eARC? Mercy is my girl! I hope ita awesome and can’t wait to read the review!

    • Wow, that’s so funny since I had a friend who was studying the same thing! Yeah, if you’re not in love when you aren’t suffering through it then it’s impossible to stick with it it seems. There are days when I’m all blarg, but then I think to myself “would I rather be doing anything else?” and besides reading, the answer is no, haha. Also the longer I’m in academia the more I love it (I strangely enjoy meetings and reviewing papers >.>).

So I just started Night Broken actually >.> Get excited :D

  4. Congratulations on the paper! I’m a grad student, so I know how important those peer reviewed papers can be (and don’t have any yet)!

  5. I didn’t sleep well at all earlier this week either! *grumbles* but hey – at least you got some major reading done hehe! You’ve made me really curious about The Waking Engine, I’ll definitely have to check that one out! You got a LOT of gorgeous books this week too!! Most are new to me but I’m loving all the dragon-themed ones XD I’ll have to look up most of the ones you got and see how much bigger my TBR will get because of it LOL I am a tad jealous that you got approved for The Immortal Crown – I just found out I was denied this morning. D’oh! Oh well, I hope you enjoy it and ALL your other books Anya ♥

    • Haha, apparently I have an obsession with dragons or something ;-). I hope you slept better this week!!

Oh no, I’m sorry! Through EW right? What stats do you include in your profile??

  6. Ahhh I want Princess of Thorns too! ooo and I got Prototype so excited to read that – buddy read? I just requested Mistwalker so I hope I get it! I have Between and Wakeworld and now Dreamwalker as well oh and Red Delicious. Should I check out or request any of these others I wonder. Toxic Heart is a follow up to something right so I think thats out – but ooo The Forbidden LIbrary sounds like a tile i must read the description for!

    • YES! You’ve read Archetype already I assume?? That book was crazy!

Yeah, Toxic Heart is the sequel to Mystic City, but I’ve been eyeing that one so I’m going to try to fit them both in… sometime >.> I like trading for books since then I don’t have to worry about the publisher getting mad about me not reviewing on time, haha. The Forbidden library looks like awesome MG since it’s about a magic library :D

  7. Oh how cool! Congrats on submitting your first abstract! I’m hoping to submit my first paper this semester, but we’ll see how it goes. I’d be happy to look over your program if you like. I work in computational biology, so I’d be interested in seeing what you’re working on :)

  8. What’s that line in academia? “Publish or sink”? Or is it more like “Publish or die”? “Publish or perish”? ;)

Nice ARC’s! And the library sale got me, too. I’m in the same boat with last minute review reads. But I think we’ll both make it in time. Our eyes might be dead and our brains fried, but we will make it. And you should read Mistwalker first. I’ve been dying to find out if it’s as good as the synopsis makes me hope it is.

  9. I’ve just gone back to the Divergent trilogy too! I’m started Allegiant yesterday evening and I’d forgotten how Roth isn’t a fan of the catch-up and was pretty confused until I decided to trot off and read a re-cap of Insurgent. I’m only going to be reading Allegiant at home because I borrowed a great, hulking hardback from my library and there’s no chance I’m hawling it on the train to and from work so we’ll see how it goes…

I’m looking forward to your review of The Waking Engine – sounds great! :)
Charlotte @ Lit Addicted Brit recently posted…Weekend Cooking: Rick Stein’s ‘India’My Profile

    • Haha, yeah the lack of a catchup was a bit of a problem for me as well! I’m hoping that I’m able to get to Allegiant soon instead of waiting as long as I did between Divergent and Insurgent!

  10. Susan Gourley says:

I read Seraphina because my daughter talked me into it and I was glad. I’m going to reread it before the second one come out. I read The Way of Kings when it first came out and am going to reread it next month before the second book comes out.

  11. Nice haul, Anya! Sorry about the insomnia, though. That’s a beast. I had it early Saturday morning (plowed through the forthcoming Robyn Carr romance, though, so the time was well-spent.)

Also, thanks for your Guide to Getting Approved on Edelweiss – great post! I’m going to link to it in next Saturday’s News & Notes.

    • Haha, exactly, time well-spent! I just always get so grouchy from not being able to sleep so I can’t relax and enjoy the extra time, haha

      Woot, thanks for linking :D

  12. Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads says:

Ahh, The Immortal Crown! I really liked Gameboard of the Gods :)

Sounds like you had quite the week. I’m also suffering insomnia, but also exhausted. So I will be up all night but going to bed at like 8:30 because I can’t stay awake. Then my pregnancy is all like, hey you, wake up and lay there for awhile struggling to sleep, despite the fact that I’m tired…lol

Also, yay for biology stuff! :) I love biology..lol

    • You should go request it!! :D

Urgh, pregnancy insomnia sounds horrible, I’m so not looking forward to that time in my life but also excited because babies are the cutest things ever, haha.

      • Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads says:

I would request it but since I’m no longer blogging right now, I’d feel bad.

        • Fair enough ;-) That’s some great restraint, I don’t know if I’d be able to resist. This might be why I continue blogging even when I’m pulling my hair out too, since I just love reading books early *is weird*

  13. Pet that Unravel copy a few times for me!! I absolutely loved Linked! And TOXIC HEART!! Super jelly of that one as well! I feel like Mystic City came out forever and a day ago!! You got an amazing haul this week and I hope you enjoy every single one of them!! :)

  14. Alyn Yang says:

I remember reading Dragons of the Fallen Sun. I never finished it because of school. I would love to read The Barrow and Princess of Thorns! I hope you enjoy them all!

  15. I think I might have to do a re-read of Divergent and Insurgent, and audiobooks are a great idea for that. Then finally I’ll get to Allegiant lol.
Yay for more dragon books! Especially that 1$ one, that’s a great deal. I’m going to have to check out Wakeworld I think, especially since you mentioned Dragons. I hope you enjoy everything else you’ve gotten too!

    • Haha, so agreed! I feel a little bad since I don’t remember everything that happened at the end of Divergent and am all “wait, Will, Will, right! I remember Will!” I’m hoping that I’ll get to Allegiant sooner than I waited between Divergent and Insurgent *sigh*

Between is the first Wakeworld book and I’m reading it right now. It took a little bit to get started, but it’s a really cool mix of high fantasy and urban fantasy :D

  16. The Waking Engine sounds very good. And I love the Mercy Thompson series. Really looking forward to that one! I’m going to spend some time reading about a bunch of the books you’ve listed.

  17. I’d not heard of Princess of Thorns but it’s added to my GR wish list now! Looks amazing. I’ve not read that Dragon Lance! How is it? Great haul Anya :-)

    • Haha, no idea when I’ll have a chance to read that Dragonlance book, but I felt compelled to get it because it was ONE DOLLAR :D
