Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

The week after holiday traveling is always a wash right? The first couple of days I felt so overwhelmed that I went into manic mode, ended up with a lovely migraine Tuesday, and then trying to get lots of things done left me with no reading time D:. I seriously read about fifty pages this week I think, so frustrating! I have about five books on my currently reading list because I just can’t seem to find time to sink into and focus on one. Here’s to a better reading week next week!

My Week

Assassin's BladeI currently feel qualified to talk about Assassin’s Blade since that’s what I was listening to on my drive to the boy’s place on Friday :D. I’ve been frustrated with Celaena claiming how she was the best without seeing any evidence of that in book one and in the first novellas. I’m now on The Assassin and the Underworld and am happy to see her suffering and working hard to actually be an assassin instead of just talking about it ;-). I’m horrible to characters is really what it comes down to, but I need proof that a character is strong, not just talk D:.

FirefightIn my few minutes of reading each night, I’ve been reading Firefight since I got halfway on the drive home from Thanksgiving! I have to say that David’s humor is just not appealing to me this time around strangely. I loved his weird metaphors in book one and how dorky he was, but now he’s just annoying me :-(. I am really excited about where the series is heading in terms of what is actually causing all these powers!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

This Shattered World Endsinger

Hopefully I’m already at least a few chapters in to This Shattered World by the time you read this! This is my focus for the weekend since I’ve been putting it off for far too long (and read and reviewed the novella, yey!). I’ll also be hoping to get further in Endsinger once I finish Firefight this week, assuming I have an evening or two to actually read….

Happy Reading!

  1. I’m not the only one then? Thank goodness!! I have made such slow progress in all my books this past week and I’ve been so frustrated! I’m hoping for a much better reading week!

Ah yes, its nice to see Celaena actually work, instead of just talk huh? If you’re at the short story with the silent assassins, I think you’re at the point where I started to really like Celalena :)

    Have a great week!

    • I hope you had a good reading week! I had a better one in comparison I guess, sigh ;-)

It took me until the Underworld for her to win me over a bit, though I still think she should train more even when not being forced to by punishment >.>

  2. Yes ENDSINGER!!!

  3. Gah! Migraine! How I loathe migraines :( I’m sorry you ended up with one AND that you didn’t get much reading done – I can certainly sympathize with both. I know what you mean about TAB giving us proof of how badass Celaena is. I wish I’d read it before ToG, it would have likely bumped ToG up to a full 5-star rating. Oh and I’m sorry to see that David isn’t working for you this time around with Firefight – I’ll cross my fingers things improve for ya asap :) Happy reading ^^

    • Migraines are the worst! I think I’ve finally kicked that bout of them though! I’m hoping that my annoyance with David was just the headache’s fault ;-)

  4. I’m still not willing to jump into the Throne of Glass series, but I completely agree with you about characters, especially when it relates to some sort of skill. Stop telling me you’re the best or good at something and SHOW ME. :P

Good luck finding more reading time!

    • Hehe, fair decision, at this point if I decide I love the later books, I’ll write a synopsis for those who want to jump straight to the good ones ;-)

  5. Migraines are the worst and those little reading weeks always frustrate me as well. I hope next week is better and you find a good book to sink into. I picked up some novella’s by one of my favourites and that seemed to help my reading mood, although it doesn’t help my review books pile.

One of my issues with Throne of Glass was how Celaena kept mentioning she was the best assassin, but then she never showed those skills and acted more girly and worried about her appaearance. I DNF’d it eventually.

I just got my copy of These Broken Stars as I’ve been hearing good things about it, I hope the enjoy the sequel, I heard some people were a bit disapointed with it. I plan on reading that Jay Kristoff series eventually as well, love the covers!

    • I did finally have a chance to get really into a good book this week, because I took Wednesday off >.> oops!

Yeah, so far I’m not thrilled with the Celaena I’ve read about, but apparently it gets better in Crown of Midnight and that’s my next read in the series, so I figure I should give it a try!

I hope you love These Broken Stars :D I ended up really liking This Shattered World, though it is definitely a different story so I can see why some people wouldn’t be thrilled.

  6. I definitely agree with you about Celaena. In Throne of Glass we were TOLD about her epic badass skills, but we were never really shown them. Crown of Midnight was a little better in its show-iness, but I think that The Assassin’s Blade really brought it to light. But I don’t think the novellas should have to be read to get to know a character. But I guess that’s a whole different topic!

I hope you like This Shattered World. I liked it enough, but no way near as much as I enjoyed These Broken Stars. It just didn’t have the same X factor, unfortunately.

    • Haha, I’m hopeful about Crown now because I still wasn’t all that satisfied with what we saw of Celaena in the novellas D:

Yeah, I get that about This Shattered World, it was pretty darn slow until 50% but then I loved it!

  7. Oh, no! Sorry to hear that Firefight is not working out as well as the first one for you. Hope you have a better week next week!

    • It definitely could be mood too, I worry how much mood effects my feelings for books or how much my feelings for books effects my mood!

  8. HAH! I love that you’re hard on characters. Don’t ever stop!

  9. I’m always completely exhausted after travel – even if I slept enough during the travelling. Maybe it’s something about a mental overload. Hope you can relax a bit this week (:

  10. Sorry to hear you had a crazy week. I know the feeling – last week was insane between work and the start of Christmas preparations, so I’ve fallen behind on writing blog articles and had little time to work on my book. Here’s hoping this week will be kinder to both of us.

I can’t remember if I’ve asked you this already (and forgive me if I have!), but how much do you recommend the Lotus War Trilogy? I’m just catching this series now that the final book is out, and everyone I’ve asked so far has had awesomely high praise for it.

  11. I loved Assassin’s Blade, I’d love to listen to the audiobook. I’m really in to audiobooks right now. I’m listening to the Harry Potter ones for Harry Xmas.

  13. Look forward to your review of Firefight – I enjoyed the first book, though it was nowhere near my favourite by Sanderson.

Hope things are calmer for you this week, I know how frustrating it can be not to be able to get as much reading done as you’d like! Whatever you do get around to, hope you enjoy it! :) Have a great week.

    • It’s pretty hard to replace favorites in the Sanderson category ;-) I can’t decide between Way of Kings and Elantris right now >.>

      Thanks!!
