Updates from the Lair

I’m done with finals!!!!!! *runs around screaming* I then proceeded to do pretty much nothing for the rest of the week because I was so worn out. I did get all the holiday shopping done though, and repotted my Aloe plants :D. And I read a bit ;-). I had really wanted to have a couple of 12-hour reading sprints, but I just didn’t have it in me :(. I’m going to try to get a productive week of work done this coming week, though I won’t have homework so I can read every evening! Then starts the Great Minnesota Adventure (i.e. driving all over the state and neighboring states to visit family for two weeks). Also, Mr. Boy is starting to sound okay with the idea of going to BEA!!!!

My Week

I started Starters, haha! I checked this one out from the library weeks ago, so it was nice to finally get into it. I have Enders to review, so I’m scurrying along ;). It’s a quite a fun futuristic sci-fi read, though especially at first there were elements that seemed so familiar from all the other books in the genre. All in all, a lot of fun and well written :). I’m hoping for a big twist at the end!

Then I also started Archetype because I didn’t have Starters when I was getting my hair done, haha. Archetype is one I requested because a friend read a super advanced copy and LOVED it, therefore I must read it too! I’m not too far in but enjoying the mystery so far. It’s very Handmaid’s Tale ;-).

Finally, I started and finished Tin Star this week, so at least that was productive! I am sad to say that I was disappointed and it actually put me in a bit of a reading slump during the week. It’s just really freaking slow and very little actually happens. I had been thinking it was just the first half since things picked up a bit half way through, but no, just nothing…. Full review to come closer to the pub date ;-).

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

I’m putting all the fun reviews and discussions that I find in Sci-fi and Fantasy Fridays, so check them out there!

Happy Reading!

  1. Oh man Tin Star wasn’t that good huh? I just got OUT of a reading slump last week from too many meh books in a row. Luckily I’m tooting right along at a nice clip so hopefully I can make a big dent in my 2012 TBR leftoever review books before the new year!~

  2. Eeeep, YAY for being done finals :D I almost took a deep breath myself there, I remember the relief of being done with that stuff around this time of year all too well hehe Congrats girl! Starters sounds incredible so I hope you’ll love it!! I haven’t heard of any of the other ones you mentioned there but I’ll be investigating further verrry soon I’m sure XD

    • Thanks :D It’s so odd though when it’s final papers since I turned them in early and then I keep worrying that the prof will respond with a “I think you want to revise this before the actual due date” Fortunately that didn’t happen ;-). I haven’t checked my grades yet though *gulp*

  3. Poor Tin Star. I see very little love for the book. I hate it when a book forces you into a reading slump. So irritating.

    • Yeah, it’s just… an odd one :(. It kind of feels like it shouldn’t have been published on it’s own, it would have been a good start to a longer book I think.

Yay for finals being done! I hope you have a nice relaxing holiday season :) And hopefully you enjoy Starters (I did!) and Archetype. Also, get lots of reading done!

  5. Congrats on surviving the semester! I know exactly what mean by needing a week off to recoup … and then start feeling antsy for not being productive. I still have some Christmas shopping to do, so it hasn’t hit too badly yet, but my time off from the Nanowrimo project will soon be coming to an end. Don’t work too hard over the holidays!

  6. I’m almost done with my finals also and it is such a rewarding feeling. I’m hoping to get a lot of reading done over break.

  7. I’m reading TIn Star right now–I’m sort of liking it? I can’t really decide. I’m sort of bored but interested at the same time. It’s an odd feeling. Yay to being done with finals!! I’m sure that’s a huge relief! Also, so exciting that you might go to BEA. I would love to attend but I don’t’ see it happening anytime soon.

    • That’s exactly how I felt! It’s just a very odd book to be honest.

I might be able to snag some extras if I go to BEA ;-)

  8. BEA, you guys are all so lucky! I need to go at least ONCE :D but I don’t think that is going to happen any time soon.. But, awesome that you might be going! And yeay for finishing your finals. Have a great week with lots of reading :D

    • Hehe, this is probably going to be the once if it works out. I figure I won’t be able to convince him to go a second time >.> Yey, thank you :D

  9. Yay for finals being done! It must feel nice to have more time to relax and read now :) Yay for him agreeing with BEA too! I haven’t been to one yet, but I don’t know if I’m going to be able to go next year. Depends on finances.
Starters was pretty good but I still want to read Enders someday. Might even have to re-read the first one since I don’t remember the details.
That sucks about Tin Star being not so good. I’d never actually heard of it but still.
Hope you have a good week!

    • Definitely! Especially since I realized the other week that I’m only being paid to work half time, so I was actually working too much during the semester >.> This is the one week where I don’t have class, haven’t started holiday travel yet, and therefore I’ve decided it’s perfectly fine to come in closer to ten and leave when I want to, haha. I go crazy if I don’t work at least some during the week (I took a couple days off last week and it messed with my head!), but it’s so nice to decide to spend the afternoon reading ;-).

BEA is definitely only an option for me because we have family in New York that has been wanting us to visit for ages. It’ll be the first time I meet his father’s family, *gulp*, but he also wants to drive (further reducing expenses) which also means lots of room for books :D

Enders has plenty of reminder sentences, so I don’t think you need to worry too much :) It definitely doesn’t assume that you recently read Starters, which is always weird for me when I read one book right after the other, haha.
