Updates from the Lair 12/21/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I was productive this week! I even finished two books! I ran some experiments, got some data, worked on some code, banged my head against some bugs, and worked out two days. I would have liked to get to the gym more, but I worked so late most evenings that it wasn’t really an option. This is why I need a treadmill, it’s never too late to jump on the treadmill safely in your apartment :D. I also started physical therapy for my back this week. It was fine, though I’m more sore currently, which is a little frustrating. Anyway, I need to wrap presents this weekend, but then we’re off on another grand Minnesota Adventure!

My Week

The Broken Kingdoms I started The Broken Kingdoms on audio this week after finishing Legion :D. I’m so happy to finally be getting back to this series since I really enjoyed The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms when we read it together as a read-a-long last year. I’m not loving the narrator for this one, but the story is cool and full of interesting magical twists. The main character is blind but can see magic, which is also really really cool :D.

UnboundMy main reading for the week though was Unbound the newest Jim C. Hines Libriomancer book :D. When it showed up I knew I had to jump right in ;-). I just finished it and really enjoyed it. It was great to see a story where the character has real consequences to his actions right away and things aren’t just easily fixed by magic. And whoa, things are pretty epically messed up in Unbound!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Night Shift Witches of Echo Park

In addition to still trying to finish all the books that I have currently in progress (mostly Firefight and Endsinger since I’ll be traveling this week), I might dip into Night Shift since I received it for review consideration and then I’ll need an e-book since we’ll be driving at night, so I’ll be reading the manuscript I have to beta-read along with Witches of Echo Park for the blog tour :D.

Happy Reading!

  1. I hope your back feels better for your adventuring, Anya! I will add you to the list of people who have recommended N.K. Jemisin…yet another fantasy author whose books I own but haven’t read. >.>

  2. Good luck with your physical therapy! Soreness may feel uncomfortable, but like Kel said, it’s a good sign.

And if for some reason I don’t comment here again before then… have a Merry Christmas! :)

    • I’m totally fine with muscle pain, it’s the nerve pain that is the problem :-/ I hope you had a happy holidays!

  3. I wish I could say I have been productive as you but I have just returned from holidays so that’s my excuse. I am so jealous that you’re reading Endsinger and Firefight. Why aren’t they in my life yet?!

  4. Oh, I’m so glad you had a productive week – it feels awesome getting so much work done, no? I would love to hear what you think about The Broken Kingdoms, by the way. One of my friends read + loved it, but another one absolutely despised it, so… I’m kind of torn as to whether I should pick it up! ;)

Oh, and merry early Christmas! Hope you have a lovely time in Minnesota.

    • Such a relief to finally feel productive at work, haha. I am really enjoying Broken Kingdoms, though the narration of the audiobook is a bit annoying. The main character is blind so the story feels different than a lot that I’ve read, but it’s fun seeing the gods in a very different light too :D

  5. Happy Holidays Anya! I hope you and the boy have a blast with the Minnesota Adventure :D I wish you lots of bookish fun, bookish gifts and all the best in the new year!! ♥

  6. Yay for productivity! I guess it’s good that PT is making you sore; it means you’re strengthening muscles, right? Good luck on the upcoming road trip and (in case I fall behind on commenting again…which is somewhat likely) an early Merry Christmas! :)

    • yeah, but by sore I mean my nerve pain not muscle pain :(. Apparently I pushed too hard and need to pay more attention to when my back is getting tired, sigh. I hope you had fun holidays since I’m even farther behind than you ;-)

  7. I finished The Witches of Echo Park this last week. It was…interesting. That being said, I’m curious as to what others will think now, obvious :P
