Updates from the Lair 12/28/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

What a crazy week it has been! I drove back to my place for a doctor’s appointment on Monday (woohoo new migraine medication), then we left for Minnesota on Tuesday and have been traveling and visiting family ever since. Hopefully I’m well on my way back to Michigan by the time you’re reading this ;-). I got a fair amount of reading done in the car, I’m still sore from starting physical therapy (and hate my home exercises >.>), and am looking forward to resting at home for a bit this week hehe.

My Week

EndsingerI’ve been reading Endsinger finally! The first half was a little slow going but not because it was actually slow, mostly because of denseness and my not wanting to miss a single beautiful turn-of-phrase :). I’ve been very much enjoying it, including the few moments of happiness thrown in with all the sadness, haha. I’m excited to have some time without the radio playing or family talking around me to distract me ;-).

Owl and the Japanese Circus I’ve just read the first 10% of Owl and the Japanese Circus but I’m LOVING IT! Seriously, Owl is just the right combination of smart and snarky, she has an awesome cat, and she’s working for a Japanese dragon!! The writing is fast and addictive and look at that cover! I’m going to be ordering this from Canada if I have to, haha.

The Witches of Echo Park Urgh, it’s a good thing that Owl is going well for me since The Witches of Echo Park really tanked for me. I was able to get through it fast since the writing was pretty simple, but so was the attempt at a plot >.>. I really wanted to enjoy it, but it just felt like a cobbled together mess :-/.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

A Court of Thorns and Roses Night Shift Stonehill Downs Entangled

This week I’m thinking of taking at least a day or two off of research to recuperate before the semester starts and to get serious about my physical therapy. Part of recuperating is reading a whole lot ;-). I’m going to finally finish A Court of Thorns and Roses for sure and hopefully Night Shift as well since it came out in November! I think I’ll give Stonehill Downs a try since it’s my only eARC for this month! I also am hoping to read Entangled since I have the second book as an eARC to try to get to. Have recommendations of which of these to go for?

Happy Reading!

  1. You’re so lucky you can read in the car! Welcome back to good old Michigan. We got 8 inches of snow yesterday! I hope your back is feeling better. Owl sounds like a good book, and not just for the cool mobster dragon.

    • Yes, I love being able to read in the car! I think if I didn’t do that, I’d have to listen to an audiobook at least haha. So much snow here currently D:

  2. We are on the same page about Wtiches of Echo Park. You remind me that I need to check on my Japanese Owl etc book – maybe i can snatch it still on NG.

perhaps I’ll start listing the options for the following weeks reading …but in which post I don’t reliably do a book binging post anymore.

  4. Owl and the Japanese Circus looks good! Added it to my to-read list. I have the first book on the Lutos War series on my to-read list, but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.

    • Yey, Owl is definitely a book to try to read soon, so much fun! The Lotus War books are awesome if a bit depressing at times haha

  5. I hope you survived all the traveling all right and are now “enjoying” the physical therapy exercises. ;) Taking a day or two off from research to read sounds like a wonderful idea. Relax while you still can!

    • Survived is a relative term >.> I was really darn sick there for a bit, haven’t been that sick for years D: But I’m all rested up now for sure haha

  6. Oh Amber Benson :( Sucks to hear that you didn’t like the book. I’m a big BtVS fan so I really hoping her book would be good.

Hope you get a lot more rest over the holidays!

    • Yup, I was hoping the same thing especially since it was about witches! But yeah, it ended up being a bit of a hot mess sigh

  7. Reading a lot is an excellent way to recuperate!

I hope the new migraine meds work out. I’ve been having a lot myself lately, probably need to find something new since what I’ve been using is getting less effective.

  11. Thanks for the heads-up on Owl and the Japanese Circus – it sounds like a lot of fun! Another blogger friend of mine is reading it, too, and I like the Goodreads description so much I just preordered it. (Incidentally, the pre-order price for Kindle is only $1.99, if anyone else is interested.)

I hope your new migraine meds work well, and good luck with your PT. It’s not always fun but it can make a huge difference. It has certainly helped me!

Happy New Year, and happy reading!

    • Woot! Yeah, I saw that it was super cheap to pre-order which is even more exciting! I’m going to need a physical copy of that beauty though *pets cover*

I’ve been trying to be good with my home physical therapy and of course going to my sessions even though they kind of suck right now, haha. Happy New Year!

  12. Urgh physical therapy is no fun :( hopefully it will get you feeling better though! And yay for new migraine medicine! Enjoy your reading time while you have it :) I’m so excited for you to finish Court of Thorns and Roses!

    • So far it’s not doing a great job, but it takes a while for me to get enough in me sigh. In another week we’ll see I guess D:

  15. Well, I’m sorry about migraines and home exercises but YAY for holidays, family, loved ones, books and reading time though XD I’m only about 30% done with Owl but I’m loving it too!! Endlessly jealous that you get to start ACOTAR this week though LOL but I hope you looooove it ;-D Happy reading love ^^

    • And of course getting sick completely ruined my ACoTaR plans, but soon! I hope you ended up loving Owl, so dying for book two! Yey for Canadian awesomeness :D

  16. Oh no! I was so excited about The Witches of Echo Park but you are not the first person to say that it was a pretty big disappointment. I’m still going to read it but my expectations have definitely been lowered.

    • Yeah, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that actors aren’t necessarily the best writers, sigh. Circus is awesome, I hope you love it!
