Updates from the Lair 1/25/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, my book haul for the week, books I added to my wish-list (sort of like Waiting on Wednesday), and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I apparently used up all my willpower reserve last week since I kind of failed this week, haha. I still ended up getting a fair amount of work done, but I definitely skipped going to the gym twice >.>. I think all these work deadlines along with the end of January approaching (and hence trying to pack in all the books I aimed to read in January…) is stressing me out a bit even though I don’t realize it. Also, it’s the boy’s birthday this weekend and due to a number of people doing annoying things, his present is currently locked in the apartment office, completely unreachable without breaking in. Birthdays are a big deal to me for some reason, so that whole thing has been stressing me out all week D: . How about we make next week better, warmer, and less snowy?

My Week

Between by Kerry Schafer

I’m on the blog tour for the second book of this series, so I read the first one this week. There are dragons! I was excited about a dream magic system and dragons in UF, but the main character Vivian ended up really annoying me with her indecision and weakness (and she’s a doctor, doctors are not indecisive!). I’m really hoping the second book involves some character development on her part given the ending of the first ;-).

Mind Games

I also read Mind Games this week since I need to review Perfect Lies. I won’t be reviewing this one on the blog since I have so many other books to review as well, but you can check out my mini-review instead ;-). I really enjoyed this one since I like anti-heroes, broken characters, and stream of consciousness narration. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but that just means more for me!

Mistwalker

Finally, I started Mistwalker this week and am really enjoying it! It’s a little different than my normal read since it’s more paranormal I guess. It’s about a small lobster town in Maine, so it’s been fun finding out more about catching lobster, haha, and then the lighthouse is cursed with a spirit called The Grey Man. It’s dual narration from Willa and Grey’s perspectives so that’s been really fun reading both sides of the story. I’m not really sure where things are going to go (I’m at 30%), so it could be awesome or annoying, who knows!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Spoils

Let’s see, lots of books coming from lots of different sources this week! I bought Fragile Brilliance while I was prepping the giveaway for Tammy Blackwell’s books because the cover is pretty and I couldn’t resist. I spotted Across a Star-Swept Sea in the used books section for like $3, so I had to snag that for when I finally read those two books. The bottom of that pile is the graphic novel of Girl Genius, which my adviser has been pushing on me for a year so I finally ordered a pretty copy so that I can read it… sometime >.>. Talker 25 I have an eARC of, but there are dragons and my friend had an extra so I snagged the physical copy. Mystic City is from the library so that I can catch up and read book two. Control and Finnikin I traded for and they arrived this week :D.

Tribute

I was very happily surprised to find a copy of The Winner’s Curse in my mailbox this week since I didn’t request it! It also arrived through USPS so I didn’t even know it was coming, haha. Then The Ophelia Prophecy I requested after Tabitha pointed it out to me and I’m a little sad that it doesn’t have the cover art, but I guess that just means I need to buy a finished copy eventually ;-). The Waking Engine was a surprise since I already have read my eARC, but I’m on the blog tour so I guess they sent a finished copy anyway, haha. Finally, Earth Girl and Scroll of Years are both review books from Pyr so that I can catch up for the second books that are coming out this year!

Blood and Iron

Finally, to continue my Pyr books spree, I requested Blood and Iron off Edelweiss and I’m really excited about this new fantasy. That top portion of the cover is soooo pretty :D.

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

Earth Star The Silk Map

When I started exploring Pyr’s catalogue, I got really excited about these two series, so I’m now anxiously awaiting ARCs of them. A nice mix of sci-fi and fantasy this week :D.

Next Week’s Reading

Perfect Lies Wakeworld Dreamwalker

Perfect Lies and Wakeworld are the last on my list to read this month so I’m really going to push to finish them and successfully get to everything I scheduled for January :D. If I finish them early, I’ll probably start on the finished copy of Dreamwalker that I received since I don’t think I can make the pub date but I might as well try ;-).

Happy Reading!

  1. The pop culture references would have done it in for me. Unless it comes up as something else later (I noticed that this is a two-parter), I find it hard to believe that there are only certain people who tend to obtain a homicidal gene. We’re basically animals, and we’re all programed to kill and defend.

    • Right?? They were so strange. It seems like its rarely a good idea to include pop culture references *sigh*. Also excellent point, I would be won over hardcore if it was discovered that everyone has a kill gene of some kind :D

  2. It’s SO tough to keep any form of consistency going when you juggle work, studies, health, relationships, fitness, blogging AND reading isn’t it?! Especially if you’re kind of an introvert >.< LOL Anyways, I'm so sorry to hear the the boy's BD present got taken hostage like that D:

On a more positive note, you got some SUPER exciting books: Mystic City, Control,The Winner's Curse, Across the Star-Swept Sea and Finnikin of the Rock are all on my TBR! Happy reading hun :D

  3. I was pretty bad at getting to the gym this last week too! Hopefully we’ll both have a better week this week and get lots accomplished :)

  4. AHhhhhhhh you got a hardcover of The Waking Engine!! That is awesome. I got it on NetGalley but haven’t gotten to read more than a couple pages. I can’t WAIT to dig in, though, because it sounds so good! Did you like it??

    • I did like it, though be prepared for a lot of language, haha. I loved the writing and descriptions though *swoons*

  5. A hearty second to less snow! It seems to be putting us in hibernation mode and making productivity a thing of the past. I can’t wait to see your thoughts on Mistwalker. It has me so curious!

Agh! So jealous of the pretty-ful $3 Across a Star-Swept Sea. I can’t wait to read it, but my library doesn’t have it yet. :(

Good luck with the birthday plans, and no stress. ;) Have a happy Monday!

  8. Chomping at the bit for The Silk Map myself. And I was going to read Blood and Iron next, then looked again and realized release was still 6 weeks off. So I will delay it a few more weeks.

    • Ee, so excited! Blood and Iron is tempting me but I’ll hold off for a bit as well, though I’m planning to read it sometime in Feb :D

  9. You know I’m crazy eager for you to read The Winner’s Curse–so much love. I really need to read Finnikin…I’ve heard great things but haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m curious about Talker I’ve not downloaded it and might wait to see what you think of it before I do. Great haul!

    • Haha, I’ll make sure to read it ASAP! I was unsure about Talker but Krys convinced me that there are dragons so I need to read it ;-)

  10. Oooh, look at your pretty foreign Finnikin. *pets* I love that series so much!

  12. I agree with making next week less snowy. We had a blizzard just about last night, I couldn’t see the buildings behind my place. Hopefully it’s less stressful for you too.
That’s awesome that you got some mail you weren’t expecting, I wish I had gotten The Winner’s Curse. I can’t wait to see what you think of quite a few of these, especially the second book in that tour that you have to read.
    Have a good week!

    • Ugh, exactly, though looking at the forecast I don’t think it’ll be getting better for us D: Thanks!! You too :D
