Updates from the Lair

Welcome to 2014!!!!! *throws confetti* So I’ve been chilling out a lot this week since my classes don’t start until the sixth and I just couldn’t bring myself to try to be productive before then >.>. I’m going a teensy bit crazy with too much free time, so I’m looking forward to getting back to grad schooling, especially since hopefully I’ll be publishing my first first-author paper this semester (first-author is a big deal, in you aren’t in the crazy world of academics, hehe). I also went on a bit of a trading spree this week and would love to continue doing so >.> I’m up for trading my ARC of Avalon if you are interested, check out the link since it has my wishlists on it ;-). Finally, Mr. Boy and I have miraculously started cooking actual dinners in the evening for the past four whole days! We came up with some things to make and went shopping like real adults :D.

My Week

TwoI just started Two since I’m on a blog tour for it next week. I enjoyed the previous book, One, fairly well, so I’m excited to see where Two goes with the whole superpowers thing. I was nervous about the package arriving all right since I was gone for over a week, but both Two and One’s physical copies made it a-okay :D. I must say I really love these covers and am quite impressed with this indie author!

The 5th Wave

I’m still listening to The 5th Wave and made progress this week since I had to drive back to my apartment to check on it and pay rent, then drove back to the boy’s (four hours round trip). The apartment is okay in case you were wondering ;-). Also, The 5th Wave kept making me cry while driving D: All the feels!!!!!! I’m also just a sucker for adorable small children.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Titus Groan IMG_1355

First the presents!!! I got a massive number of giftcards and thank you so so so much to those of you who sent presents <3. These are the physical holiday presents: Titus Groan is apparently a fantasy classic that I must read! And yes, that is Hello Kitty wrapping paper that it was wrapped in ;-). Then the parentals got me a few gorgeous hardcovers to shine on my shelf :D. They also got me the Harry Potter box set with Hogwarts on the spine, but it is still wrapped in bubble wrap to be transported home, so it’s not interesting to take a picture of at the moment, haha. Finally, the little ADORABLE bookshelf on the side was made by Mr. Boy since he is going to make me a full size bookshelf this year and wanted to make a stand-in present for the holidays. Yes, it has little books on it and pictures on the top shelf :D.

The Queen of Tearling One by LeighAnn Kopans Cruel Beauty Poison Dance Plus One

And the review copies! I’m always up for another high fantasy, especially with female characters, so The Queen of Tearling and Cruel Beauty are right up my alley! I’m reviewing Two for a blog tour, so I got a review copy of One to catch up on that series. The lovely Livia Blackburne sent me a review copy of her novella Poison Dance since I’m so excited about her upcoming novel Midnight Thief! Finally, I can’t wait to see the cover art for Plus One, but for now I will just drool over the awesome fantasy description :D.

I was a bit worried about packages making it while I was gone, but everything turned out okay! I came home to a copy of Stolen Songbird from Strange Chemistry (sooo pretty :D) that had been shipped from Osprey Publishing so I didn’t have any idea what it was before opening it >.>. Then I’m on a tour for Two and so a copy of One and Two arrived in the mail, signed! I’m reading Two currently :D. I must admit I’m quite impressed with the cover and printing quality of these two indie books, so purty!

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

Expiration Day

Expiration Day is a 2014 release from Tor Teen and I’m flabbergasted that I hadn’t heard of it before! Androids! Evil cooperation making and then destroying androids! MC is one of the last human children but has android friends :D. I’m stoked ;-).

The Fifth Season

Also, I finally read the description of The Fifth Season (frequent extinction level events to which life and magic has adapted????), plus I actually read The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and therefore I’m dying to read Jemisin’s next novel :D.

Finally, did you know that The Assassin’s Curse duology is going to have another companion duology added???? The first book in the Hannah Duology is called The Wizard’s Promise and it centers around a witch-to-be, which hopefully means that we get to find out more about the magic in this awesome world :D.

Next Week’s Reading

Look, another new section :D. I thought it’d be fun for me to let you know what I’m thinking of reading in the upcoming week (ie once I finish what I’m currently reading) and you can express your opinions and advice ;-).

Cruel Beauty Horizon Queen of Tearling

I’m definitely going to be starting Cruel Beauty this week since I’m participating in a Book Buddy read for it! Then I started Horizon over holiday travels but it got put to the side, so I kind of want to get back to it. Whenever publishers send me physical copies that I requested, I want to get my review back to the quickly, hence why this May release is up the list. Finally, my other book group is thinking of starting Queen of Tearling since it’s the only book we have in common right now, haha. So, thoughts?

Happy Reading!

  1. Gah! You got SO MANY awesome books and bookish things *drools* I want you to promise me you’ll un-bubble-wrap that HP boxed set as soon as you can and post a pic for us to swoon over, k? XD Oh and YAY for Shadow and Bone – I was lucky enough to (FINALLY!!!) add that one to my collection this past week too since I won it in a giveaway :D Yay for getting the sequel AND Steelheart too!

PS- can’t wait to read your review for the Fifth Wave – I’m very curious to get your take on it. Happy reading ♥

    • Haha, I unbubble-wrapped the boxset and took out each book to pet it, but I forgot to take a picture D: I promise to get a picture for next week :D

Omg The Fifth Wave. It’s awesome but really intense and difficult *hyperventilates*

  2. Wow, you had an AMAZINGLY bookish holiday! I’m glad you have pretty copies of the Grisha and Harry Potter series for your shelves, and how awesome that you’re getting a bookcase made for you, too. Also, I approve of the Hello Kitty wrapping paper. :D

Happy 2014! To many more great books to come.

  3. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of The Fifth Season! It’s definitely high on my list of books that I MUST read this year.

    • *bounces around* I’m so freaking excited! Fortunately I have her entire back catalogue to tide me over, haha

  4. Beautiful haul!

  5. One and Two are really nice looking books! I hope they’re also really fun to read :)

  6. Amazing book haul this week! Have fun reading them all. The tiny bookshelf is really cute, too. I’m trying to cut back on ARCs for a bit so I can both catch up and read stuff I’ve had on my TBR shelves and lists, but several of yours look tempting…

  7. I’m glad to hear the apartment survived. And that is a ton of driving! But still, I understand wanting school to start. I’m a full time working “adult” now myself, but those periods of doing nothing drove me stir crazy, too. I had to make up for it by killing myself with course overload. ;) And that is a ton of books! No wonder you need a new bookshelf. :)

This Christmas was pretty sparse on book presents (only 1 actually), but that’s probably a good thing considering how many I buy for myself on a regular basis. And, of course, I’m putting money aside (along with the 52 week challenge) for a beautiful hardcover of Cress. Marissa Meyer isn’t touring anywhere close enough for me, but she will be near my sister who has graciously offered to pick up a signed copy for me. Looks to be a fun book year!

    • Haha, yeah, I’m double stacking my bookshelves these days >.> I could turn the books horizontal to make more space, but I like them vertical for now ;-). Yey, I’m so glad you’re still going to be able to get a signed copy of Cress :D

      • I don’t think my shelves are quite that bad yet … but we’re certainly getting there. The horde is starting to spread, taking over surrounding benches and chairs.

Yeah, I’m really stoked about getting a signed Cress. I don’t usually get too worked up about signed copies (it’s more I grab them if I liked the book and it’s close enough), but I am something of a collector, and my signed Cinder and Scarlet would feel very lonely without this new one. ;) What about you? Do you go out of your way for signed copies, order from bookstores keeping them in stock? I tend to ignore it most of the time because there are few events close to me. Is it the same out your way?

        • Basically, if my local indie is having a visiting author or has signed copies, I buy one or two because I both like to support my local indie and because it’s fun to have signed books ;-). I’m most excited to actually meet her though *swoons* My local indie that is hosting this event is only a block or two from me, so I could actually walk if I didn’t have to carry all the books back ;-)

  8. Love your book haul this week…so much awesome. I’ve yet to read One or Two but I’ve heard good things about the series. I should probably think of starting them sooner than later. I can’t wait to start Queen of Tearling :-) Feels so good to be cooking dinners! I love when my family is able to do that for a consistent amount of time. We always fall off the wagon here and there but mostly we keep it up. Helps that I have a wee one to feed…want to make sure he’s eating good things. You’ll have to let me know your favorite meals so I can make them! I run out of ideas so easily for cooking.

    • Haha, we’re definitely going to fall of the wagon, but I’m hoping we can keep it up for a couple of weeks! We only see each other on the weekends generally (over the holidays we got two whole weeks together :D), so we really should be able to manage for two nights a week, haha. Plus, I’m counting parmesan tilapia which takes pretty much no effort and I love mmmm. My go to’s currently are tilapia, lasagna, enchiladas, tacos and pizza ;-)

  9. Awesome Haul this week! And super excited for the bookshelf. My BF has promised to get me one when we move into our apartment on the 15th so I’m super excited for that. Can’t wait for your review of cruel beauty – its on my tbr. And I need to check out One and Two – loving those covers! Have a great week!

  10. I am chomping at the bit to read The Fifth Season. Just absolutely giddy. And alas, I have not read Titus Groan yet either, I always forget to make time for the classics and originators of the genre.
