Updates from the Lair 2/08/15

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Another crazy week! I was able to get a couple of bloggy things done though because one morning I woke up at 7 am for no reason and wrote some reviews for once :D. I also was able to actually get a lot of reading done last weekend because the boy was working night shifts. And now I have an exam and deadlines next week so that’s probably going to be my only blogging time for a while ;-).

My Week

SeekerI’m over halfway through Seeker on audio and still really enjoying it! It takes a while but now I’m finding out about all the history and science/magic (same thing after a while after all) that the Seekers have control over. Plus I really love broken characters so these four are working well for me, ha! Also the audiobook is really excellent, the narrator is Scottish and a delight to listen to but also does the Chinese voices really well to my ear :D.

Dead HeatWoot, woot! I snagged a copy of Dead Heat from NetGalley and couldn’t resist diving in. The supernatural mystery is so compelling and it’s great to be hanging out with Anna and Charlie again *swoons*. The end of Fair Game freaking tortured me so I’m SOOOOO excited to find out what is going to happen next with the Fae! READ THIS SERIES!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Kushiel's Dart Winner's Crime Lion Heart

I requested a copy of Kushiel’s Dart from my library when Pabkins mentioned she wanted to read it and I’m really excited to finally read this much beloved fantasy! It seems likely to me that I’ll be getting through Dead Heat very quickly despite losing sleep, so if I have time I will be starting Winner’s Crime finally this week I think! And I was very lucky to borrow an ARC of Lion Heart and so will probably be reading that switching off with Kushiel’s Dart if I somehow get ahead of Pabkins in our buddy reading ;-).

What are you reading this week?

Happy Reading!

  1. I just finished DEAD HEAT for the second time this week. Yeah, it was that good. (And I’ve had Anna/Charles withdrawal, so I ended up rereading the whole series because I missssssed them).

I’m in the KUSHIEL’S DART buddy read too — it’s one of my favorites, so I was excited to see the new cover show up a few weeks ago in one of Tabitha’s posts.

    • I completely understand! I literally couldn’t put it down even though I really really needed to study, ha!

Wait, I haven’t see the new cover, gah!

  2. The busy-ness and productivity! It burns! But yes, you’re doing an amazing job keeping up with the blogging and reading and everything as far as I can tell. :)

I hope the exam stuff goes well!

    • Sometimes literally when my eyes sting from staring at the darn screen all day D:

The exam went as well as can be hoped I think, it seemed easy, ha

      • Ooh, I know that feeling. It’s been hitting me pretty much every day this week at work. I need to get better lighting or cut back on the screen time or something. :(

Yay for easy exams! Unless they’re tricky and make you think it’s easy when, in reality, you failed the whole thing… >.>

        • My eyes, they burn!!

Yeah, I’m a little nervous that I made a bunch of dumb mistakes, but my professor agreed that he thought it should be easy, so maybe I did fine :D

  3. It’s sad that boy had to do night shifts, but then again – more reading. yay :)
Kushiel’s Dart is a nice fantasy. It takes time, but when the adventures start rolling you can’t put it down. Also it features one of my favorite fictional crushes – Joscelin. I can’t wait to hear what you will think!

  4. “Another crazy week! I was able to get a couple of bloggy things done though because one morning I woke up at 7 am for no reason and wrote some reviews for once :D. ” — ME TOO LOOK AT THE TIME TRYING TO CATCH ON COMMENTS AND AFTERWARDS, A POST. Woo!

“And now I have an exam and deadlines next week so that’s probably going to be my only blogging time for a while ;-).” Yep! YAY FOR SCIENCE AND BLOGGING ;).

So glad you’re enjoying Seeker still! I saw a good review for it and then bad after bad one and I was like :O :O what is going on? And hahaha sometimes the narrator accent can make such a huge difference!

Ooh, Kushiel’s Dart is a beloved fantasy? So I know I’m super behind on fantasies in general though I tend to love them (aka why I’m asking). I must investigate after this comment… I hope you enjoy it! And Winner’s Crime! And Lion Heart! Buddy reading is awesome :). I’m still stuck on The Heart of Betrayal. Haven’t read much besides the BEA Buzz Books Excerpt which has now added a new book to my to-read list this spring o.O (Daughter of Deep Silence by Carrie Ryan — as if there weren’t already too many books :O).

    • Haha oh god I see the time, why are you awake????? ;-) I’m done with my exam now at least!

Yeah I have heard from a lot of people about Kushiel’s Dart though I never realized that the main character is a prostitute, ha.

Oh god, no, not more books! I definitely skip the buzz excerpts to avoid this problem ;-)

  5. The Kushiel series is one of the few I own, although I only have the first trilogy (which is the best of the whole series). It’s been a while since I read it, but I seriously loved it. I’m almost afraid to re-read in case I don’t love it as much.

  6. Yay for bloggy-writing time! Even if it’s just a little bit. Glad to hear things are going OK otherwise.

I’ll have to keep an eye out on your thoughts about Kushiel’s Dart. It’s been sitting on my shelf unread for a while now. Been reluctant to read it because of all the sexual content…

This week I’m reading Shadow Study by Maria V. Snyder. I was able to get an early copy directly from Maria as a thank-you for the interview I invited her to do for my blog. :D Pretty good so far!

    • Yeah, there is definitely a fair amount of sex as far as I can tell. She’s still young where I’m at, but she was just initiated which meant watching live porn strangely enough… She’s a prostitute that finds pleasure in pain soooo, it’ll be interesting I guess!

That is so awesome, I hope you ended up loving it :D

  7. You have Dead Heat and Lion Heart in the same week!? I can’t decide if I hate you or I want to be you.
Sounds like you have a great week of reading. Enjoy! (And thanks for the reviews, they are so helpful.)

  8. Adelynne Chang says:

Looks great! I’ve seen mixed things about Seeker so I’m really looking forward to your review.

I can’t wait for The Winner’s Crime and Lion Heart! I hope you like them and I’ll be waiting for their reviews. :)

  9. Kushiels Dart! Seeker sounds really cool.

  10. Huh, I wonder how much the audio improves Seeker… Because I’ve only read pretty bad reviews of it. Which disappointed me because I love the concept. I may have to check out the audio and see what I think, now I’m even more curious!

I’ve been avoiding NetGalley but knowing Dead Heat is on there has me tempted! I can’t wait for more Charles and Anna! Oh and read winners crime next, I’m dying for that one!!! How’s your back doing? Hopefully better! Have a good week Anya!

    • I have to admit that I’m honestly baffled about all the negative reviews. I can see how the beginning is confusing, but I kind of like not getting all the answers to everything right away ya know?

My back is doing all right! I’m on a lot of pain meds which has helped immensely along with muscle relaxants haha

  11. Hmmm I skiped over Seeker because I thought I wouldn’t like it. Maybe I’ll give it a shot.

    • A lot of people haven’t liked that there aren’t clear cut answers, so are you okay with that? Since I liked it for that reason, haha.

  12. Winner’s Crime was AMAZEBALLS. I’ve read Kushiel’s Dart to see what the hype was about. Wasn’t my favorite, but I can’t wait to see what you think of it! Also, can’t wait to see your review of the Seeker. I saw it on Netgalley and was debating requesting it for a while, but didn’t end up doing it. Apparently I need to get on the Scarlet bandwagon as well. Everybody seems to be raving about it!

    • Kushiel’s Dart is pretty darn thick I must admit, but I like not worrying about reviewing it and just floating through the pretty words! SCARLET DO IT!!! ;-)

  13. I’m looking forward to your review of Seeker. I saw it on NetGalley and thought of requesting it, but I had already requested a few books and didn’t want to have too many to read. I love Scottish accents, so I may get the audiobook instead. I have two library books and then I can finally start with the 2015 release that I was most looking forward to.

    • I applaud your restraint! I ended up quite enjoying the audiobook and honestly am confused why so many people haven’t liked it D: You have to be okay with not getting all the answers I guess.

  14. Good luck finishing your book and audiobook! I got some library books so I might read them this week. :) I’m not going to read the winner’s crime since I didn’t like the first book unfortunately. Enjoy your books next week!

    • Oh no, sorry to hear that! Must be annoying seeing all the promo for book two then D: I haven’t started book two year still, haha, sigh time!
