Updates from the Lair 2/09/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, my book haul for the week, books I added to my wish-list (sort of like Waiting on Wednesday), and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

This week has been a weird week. I’m in between two major deadlines (grant proposal, ie my pay for all of next year, due next week) and we had various work events going on. I feel like I didn’t get much done, but I’m not exactly sure that is true. I also feel like I didn’t get much reading done even though I finished three books. Like I said, weird week.

My Week

Night Broken

I just finished Night Broken! I had been concerned about reading the eARC I had since the formatting was really screwing with my Kobo, but then a finished copy appeared in the mail just in time and it was fate ;-). Mercy is awesome, the monster is awesome, some realism elements made me happy. I really really really want the next book in this world, haha.

I started Nil because I couldn’t decide what other ebook to read when I went to the gym, haha. I was a big fan of Lost, so I’m excited for another mysterious island adventure and there are already some obvious paranormal elements. I’ve seen some reviews mention that things don’t get that well explained, so I’m prepared for that and hoping that that will ease some of my teeth gnashing, haha.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

The set of Meyer books are for the signed giveaway I had running last month, so those are all set to get signed and sent off. Of course I had to get a copy of Cress for myself as well ;-). Rebel I snagged from a blogger friend and Graduation Day was a trade. At the bottom is Mistwalker which is awesome and you should check out my review.

A Darkling Sea

A Darkling Sea came out last month, but Tor was nice enough to send me a review copy so I’ll be reading that this month. There will also be a giveaway when that review comes out ;-).

*dodges fruit* Yes, I’m super excited that Night Broken appeared in my mailbox :D. I actually already finished it and it was awesome!

Expiration Day Where Silence Gathers Unwrapped Sky

These are the NG books I got approved for, yey. I had traded for a copy of Expiration Day already, but I’m excited to be able to read it and officially send a review back. I enjoyed Some Quiet Place so I’m excited for the companion novel, though it looks like it’s only a PDF so I’m not sure how the eARC is going to work for me. I need ePub formats please! And Unwrapped Sky has been on my wishlist, so yey!

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

The Glass Sentence

The Glass Sentence finally got a cover, so even though I think I mentioned it before, I’m talking about it again! I’m so excited for this one, it looks sooooo cool. This is the line in the description that gets me: “the Great Disruption of 1799, when all the continents were flung into different time periods.” :D

Artemis Awakening

There are bioengineered animals to help guests enjoy their stay on this abandoned pleasure planet. I love talking animals! I love talking animals that are actually justified :D. This could be horrible or great, so let’s go with great ;-).

Next Week’s Reading

The Shadow Prince Moth and Spark Night Owls Where the Rock Splits the Sky

I think I’m starting The Shadow Prince with Book Buddies this week, so there is that. Then I’ve been in the mood for a solid fantasy, so I’m thinking Moth and Spark might need to be started. I hopefully will be receiving Night Owls soon so that I can review it for a tour next month, so I might get through that quickly. Finally, I’m really not happy with the cover redesign, but my ARC of Where the Rock Splits the Sky intrigues me and is short, so maybe I’ll try to sneak that in ;-). I’m not sure though, I need a vote!

Happy Reading!

    • Haha, I spotted that on your WoW the other week and decided to wait a few weeks before featuring it myself >.> Talking animals! :D

  2. Good luck on the grant proposal!

You always list books I want to read in your Planning to Pillage. Both have gone on my list to keep an eye on.

I got An Unwrapped Sky too, hoping I can start that soon since I need a good fantasy. Most of the “fantasies” I’ve read lately are really light on the fantasy elements, grr.

Can’t wait to hear what you think of Night Owls.

  3. Good luck with your grant proposal! I hope it goes well :)

  5. You do know she is signing Friday in Lewisville right? Granted that is Valentines so you probably have plans but I thought I would let you know :)

  6. These look fascinating. I hope you enjoy them all.

  7. I got Cress this week too, even after I told myself I was going to wait till March to get it. But then I walked into a bookstore, and we all know how that goes xD I’m finishing The Archived, and then it’s time for Cress!!! I’m so excited to see what happens.

  8. It has indeed been a weird week. It flew by, but did we actually do anything? Eh, who knows? Looks like a great haul of books, and congrats on hitting the Marissa Meyer event!

  9. Yay! I can’t wait to see what you think of The Moth and the Spark. I love that cover and am really hoping it’s an amazing read. I love seeing all those Cress books. So beautiful in person. :-)

  10. Oh, Anya! I am going to have to look at Unwrapped Sky! It looks wonderful!

Meyer is coming to my local B&N next Friday. I am still trying to decide which books to buy, and if I can snag a copy for a giveaway on the blog. I am super excited about meeting her!

  11. I’m planning on starting that Mercy Thompson series someday, my library has all of them in eBook so far!
I also got Cress this week and I can’t wait to read it :) Graduation Day was really good too.
I hope you get all of your deadline stuff you’re working on done, and that you have a good week!
