Updates from the Lair 3/02/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, my book haul for the week, books I added to my wish-list (sort of like Waiting on Wednesday), and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Sorry today’s post was a bit late my dears! I had a fun 48 hour read-a-thon with a friend on Friday and Saturday and the internet was out at her house so I couldn’t take a break to write a blog post D:. Anyway, just finished watching Frozen with the boyfriend and while he fights with the Roku, I get to write a post, yey! This is also why I haven’t had a chance to pick winners for the big Stormlight Archive giveaway that just ended, but I will, don’t worry!

My Week

Words of Radiance

Obviously the big push this week was Words of Radiance! I finished Way of Kings early and have my post for the read-along already prepped, so I couldn’t resist jumping right into book two. I hit a slow spot right in the middle, but I’m at about page 825 now and it’s all exciting! Also there are so many pretty pictures :D

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Ugh, sorry for the horrible photo. I didn’t realize until uploading it that it was so blurry D:. These are the rest of my birthday spoils! I was given Days of Blood and Starlight and Lady Thief by my parents and then I used the money from other gifts to buy a few more things ;-).

Words of Radiance

I didn’t think I’d have anything to put in this section this week and then I got two packages from Macmillan imprints, yey! I had been reading Words of Radiance on my Kobo but the advanced copy didn’t have any of the illustrations and was missing some of the chapter header text, so I’m really happy to switch to the finished copy. Tor really went all out on the illustrations and details for this book all! As soon as you get it, open the front cover and go ooooooooo!

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

In a Handful of Dust

I’m horrible and haven’t actually read Not a Drop to Drink yet, but I hear it is amazing and now there is a companion novel coming out :D. This just means I get to binge on these at some point in the future, woot!

Child of a Hidden Sea

Yey, this one from Tor just got a cover and looks awesome! It looks like it’ll be a blend of an awesome new fantasy world but with an interesting multiverse sci-fi aspect as well. So exciting, give me the pirates!

Next Week’s Reading

A Darkling Sea Strange Sweet Song A Turn of Light Take me to Your Reader

So after I’ve finished Words of Radiance, I’ll get to go back to reading normal sized books right? I’m horrendously behind on March reads and missed my goal of finishing all of them in February (which I knew would happen honestly). Therefore, I’m still trying to read all the physical copies I have, which includes A Darkling Sea and now Strange Sweet Song, along with A Turn of Light. Tammy Blackwell is also my favorite indie author, so when she sent me her short story for the Take Me To Your Reader anthology, I knew I had to read it. Since it’s a short, I’ll definitely be able to get to that one!

Happy Reading!

  1. So I am really behind on my blog reading and I am trying hard to get caught up, but I am really anxious to see what you think/thought of Strange Sweet Song because I thought it was utterly ridiculous and so far I am the only one I know who has disliked it and I feel very ALONE. LOL.

I also REALLY want In A Handful of Dust. :D

    • Here you are: Strange Sweet Song review, I think I liked it a little bit more than you because I was really excited about the fantasy elements (Felix!) and love singing, but you are so right about the ridiculousness! As soon as the romance with crow-man started I was rolling my eyes and yelling at the book because gah, OOOOOOLD!

  2. Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads says:

Oooo, Days of Blood and Starlight! <3 So good!

Not a Drop to Drink was an okay book, not as good as I was hoping. I'm still going to read the companion book though!

    • Agreed! I actually listened to it on audio when it first came out so I didn’t have a physical copy, haha.

  3. Oo Child of a hidden sea sounds like one I’ll have to try and score.

  4. I still haven’t seen Frozen :-( I am very curious about Strange Sweet Song. I never requested it but I’ve seen some folks getting it and now want to know how it is. You must let me know!

    • You must, you would love it!!!

I’ll definitely read Strange Sweet Song soon, it looks like it’ll be fast and sweet ;-)

  5. What did you think of Frozen? Story, characters, songs? And that is a cool cover for Child of a Hidden Sea!

Good luck catching up on everything! (And I mentioned it on another comment, but I haven’t been getting my usual email updates from your site. Any ideas?)

    • Loved Frozen! Loooooved those two big twists that really surprised me for Disney and both Elsa and Anna are awesome and I connect with them surprisingly well, haha.

It’s still not working? So you signed up with the new Mailchimp system right? Checked the spam? This post went up late, so you wouldn’t have gotten anything on Sunday, but how about today?
