Updates from the Lair 3/23/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, my book haul for the week, books I added to my wish-list (sort of like Waiting on Wednesday), and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I had a pretty intense week! I got to go to a couple of high schools pretty far out in the country and talk about being a graduate student in science, yey science! We got some icey slush the first day on spring though, so the drive up on Thursday was a bit exciting ;-). We made it all right though and I got to read on the drive, yey!

My Week

The Shadow Prince

I finally finished The Shadow Prince this week and was pretty meh about it. I guessed the plot twists and got sick of the tropes. Also Daphne makes some really really dumb decisions that ended up just being so the plot could keep going :-/. Once I finally had time to devote to reading it though, it did go fast despite being 500 pages.

Mark of the Dragonfly

I only just started Mark of the Dragonfly but I’m already loving it! There are meteor showers that are actually debris from other worlds :D. I can’t wait to find out what world these characters are on and what all is going on, plus the characters are scrappy ;-).

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Dead Witch Walking

There was a Kim Harrison event at the local bookstore and they were giving away audiobooks for free! Since I haven’t started this series yet, I snagged book one, woot. And that’s it for this week! I’m so proud of myself, though it might be because I haven’t been able to get any packages from my office this week >.>. Still counts as restraint right?

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

Fool's Assassin

So I really want to read Robin Hobb but am a bit intimidated by where to start and how much has already been published, therefore I’m excited that this is the first in a new series! That means that I can start with this one right? Or should I still start chronologically?

The Adjacent

I just heard about this one from the author of The Prestige. I’m hoping for awesome twistiness and beautiful writing!

Next Week’s Reading

Stolen Songbird The Ring and the Crown The Ophelia Prophecy Horizon Earth Girl

I can’t decide! I need to read them all pretty soon, but obviously I won’t get to them all this week, so which first??

Happy Reading!

  1. Yay for free audiobooks!
Start with The Ophelia Prophecy! I loved her first book, and totally missed that she had another coming out.

  2. I’m so sorry I crapped out on our reading The Shadow Prince together. It still hasn’t pulled my interest. I feel it sitting there stressing me out. Bleh. Hopefully I can dedicate some time and get it off the review list (finally). I really want to read the Mark and the Dragonfly especially since you are loving it!

    • Pff, no worries, puppy! It is a really fast read though, so you could just tackle it one weekend or something.

  3. We can totally do Stolen Songbird or The Ophelia Prophecy together!!!

So glad to hear Mark of the Dragonfly is starting out good!!

  4. Free audiobook, cool! And I’m glad you had a good week – and that you’re enjoying The Mark of the Dragonfly, since that’s in my e-ARC pile on my Kindle. I need to get to it! Have a great week, and happy reading!

    • Yey, I hope you get a chance to read it soon, it’s so cool! There are meteor showers that contain items from other worlds (including ours) and it is a mystery where they come from :D

  5. You did MUCH better on book buying this week than I did. It was the authors’ fault for being there and signing stuff! ;) As far as the books to read, I don’t think I know anything about any of them, so… eenie meenie miney mo? I hope the weather this coming week is better than last!

    • Having such a busy week definitely helped me, I just didn’t have time! I did accept a few too many books for review though, but they haven’t shown up yet so they don’t count >.> Yey author event though :D Was it awesome???

      It’s snowing again here D:

      • The event was definitely fun! I wish they had similar events around here more often, but maybe it’s a good thing they don’t. Few and far between makes these author visits extra special, and my wallet would suffer if there were too many signed books up for grabs each month.

        • Haha, I completely hear you! I used to go to every author event around me but that just got not possible once they started picking up D:

  6. There’s a trilogy before Fool’s Assassin with the same characters – no idea how closely connected it’ll be to this one but if you want to read them anyway, Assassin’s Apprentice is the first. ;-)

    • Good to know! Hopefully they can be read separately since otherwise it would be kind of annoying for them to be separate trilogies, haha

  7. I love Kim Harrison . . . although the first book of The Hollows isn’t my favorite, so I hope you like it enough to stick with it. And you’re reading list for next week looks amazing. Hopefully it will more than make-up for the MEH that was The Shadow Prince (b/c yes, it definitely was MEH).

    • Good to know! First books of UF series often seem to have that problem, so I’ll keep that in mind ;-)

Agreed! I’m doing great with Mark of the Dragonfly so far so that’s a relief!

  8. You should definitely read Earth Girl as soon as possible. I love the cover and want to read your review!

  9. Yay for free audiobooks! That series looks interesting though, so maybe someday I can start it too. That sucks about the Shadow Prince, but I hadn’t really planned to read it to begin with.
I think you should read Earth Girl first, I have no idea what it’s about but I like the cover!

    • Right! I’m so excited :D

Yeah, Shadow Prince probably isn’t worth it really then :-/. Hehe, sounds good, everyone has voted for Earth Girl so it sounds like that is the plan!
