Updates from the Lair 4/05/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, my book haul for the week, books I added to my wish-list (sort of like Waiting on Wednesday), and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

What do you think about switching the weekly updates to Saturday instead of Sunday? I’m conflicted since Saturday is always one of the lowest days of the week and Sunday the highest, but I don’t know if that is just because of Saturday or because people are actually interested in the weekly updates post, hehe. Also I’ve noticed a fair number of people aren’t a fan of these posts, so if anyone is willing to expand: just too long? Too frequent (monthly instead perhaps)? Just not interested?

Anyway, life has been very up and down this week. I’ve gotten funding for the coming year, so I will be all set for that. I didn’t get a fellowship I was hoping for, but life goes on! My back was doing well after the steroid injections last week and then I tried to actually do something (walked for an hour and a ceramics class!) and now it hurts like the dickens again :-/. All the deadlines are this coming week and then I’m traveling at the end of the week! April is going to be nuts, but then it will be summer and things will be calmer in between spurts of traveling, haha. Oh the life of academia!

My Week

The Ring and the Crown by Melissa de la Cruz

I read this one in about two days I think, it’s so addictive! The romances were pretty much the plot until 2/3 through, but I still really enjoyed The Ring and the Crown since the characters were just so compelling and the writing is really fast. Also the setting is an alternative 20th century where Arthurian magic and people are still around :D.

Stolen Songbird by Danielle Jensen

Look at me and finishing books this week! I also read Stolen Songbird, which was also a very fast and enjoyable read. There are a couple of things I couldn’t help getting nitpicky about, but I’m really excited for this series from Strange Chemistry and am seriously impressed by this small pub since they keep putting out really high quality stuff!

The Forbidden Library

As you’ll see later in this here update post, I got an ARC of Forbidden Library this week and started it right away! It’s a cute book magic MG with interior illustrations (though my ARC only had the first couple D:). I haven’t read Wexler’s adult books, but I hear they are excellent and I’m quite enjoying his MG, hehe.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone

Daughter of Smoke and Bone – I got Days of Blood and Starlight for my birthday, so I finally remembered to buy a hardcover of Daughter of Smoke and Bone to match in preparation for buying book three and completing the set!

Shardhunt Brandon Sanderson

Shardhunt swag – My local bookstore got Shardhunt cards and I was able to snag one :D. I’m not going to actually pull the bookplate off the sticky back since I don’t want to restrict it, haha. Also, is there an actual game that the Szeth piece goes to????

The Forbidden Library – I requested this one through Penguin’s form months ago and completely forgot about it (and figured I didn’t get chosen) and then an ARC showed up this week, yey! I’m reading it currently because it’s my first Penguin Young Readers book ever I think ;-).

Steles of the Sky – I was told this one was on it’s way, but I haven’t read the first two and they are still in transit. However, hopefully next week I’ll be all set to binge read this trilogy :D.

Loki's Wolves Traitor's Blade Child of a Hidden Sea

Loki’s Wolves – This one was “Read Now” on Netgalley sometime early this week I think and I snagged it! I’m excited to see the sequel is coming out soon so perhaps I’ll be able to catch up.

Traitor’s Blade – I had resisted looking at Edelweiss for a while and then couldn’t resist and saw that I was auto-approved for Traitor’s Blade. I’ve seen wonderful reviews from my UK friends, so I had to snag it!

Child of a Hidden Sea – I featured this a few months ago and so had to request it when I saw it on Netgalley! Pirates!

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week, inspired by Waiting on Wednesday)

The Godless

Previously called Immolation apparently? In any case, dead gods and mysterious magic powers cropping up! I love dead gods is really what it comes down to.

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Ophelia Prophecy Horizon Dreams of Gods and Monsters Among Thieves

The Ophelia Prophecy and Horizon are the last two physical ARCs for early April, so if I can get those two read, I will be on schedule for physical ARCs *hides eARC pile*. Of course, though Dreams of Gods and Monsters comes out on Tuesday!!!! I’m going to be listening to it on audio, though I might give in and use WhisperSync to get farther when I can’t listen >.>. Finally, since I’ve been failing at schedules lately, I’m going to try to read Among Thieves asap since I’m reviewing the second for a tour at the beginning of May and I can’t miss that!

Happy Reading!

  1. Looks like you had a great week! I’ve had my eye on The Ring and Queen for a while, and I’m glad you enjoyed it. Loki’s Wolves was great, and the sequel (Odin’s Ravens) actually came out last May. Are you talking about book 3?

    Lovely post!

    • A while back they had Loki’s Wolves up on NetGalley to get people into the series I think, so I grabbed that :)

  2. I so want to read Gods and Monsters! I have heard great things about it. I hope you enjoy all your books and sorry it took me so long to come to see. I am usually much quicker to do so. Happy Reading and thanks for stopping by my STS last week!

    • Thanks for stopping by, no worries, as you can see, it takes me a while to get back to comments sometimes too ;-)

  3. I actually love these posts!

GODS AND MONSTERS! *foams* Yes, please! No regrets – I am buying this next week and reading it ASAP.

Good to know that you are feeling better, and I am sorry to hear about your fellowship. Hopefully something better will crop up soon!

    • Yey! I’ll keep doing them then :D

Fortunately I got the other smaller grants I had applied to as backups, so I will still be able to buy books next year ;-) That’s what is important after all!

  4. Great books for you this week! I hope you enjoy your new books!

  5. Argh, every time I see Smoke and Bone it reminds me that I still need to read it! Okay, after I’ve read Cracked Up To Be, I’m going to read it. Yep.

I’m Stacking My Shelves with books you might not have heard of…

  6. I’m excited to read The Ring and The Crown so I’m glad to see that you enjoyed it! I really need to read the Daughter of Smoke and Bone books as I’ve heard such amazing things about them :)

  7. I think I’m going to go the audio route for The Ring and the Crown. I received a copy for review, but I couldn’t fit it into my schedule. And now I keep seeing all of these mixed reviews and I’m seriously curious about it. Calling it addicting definitely helps. :) I’ll be putting everything on hold this week to read/listen to Dreams of Gods & Monsters, too. I’ve been re-listening to the first two books in preparation. =)

    • Oo, I’m excited to hear what you think of the audio! That’s my strategy for books I miss and am wary about too, haha.

Yey, another DoSB audio fan :D

  8. I will be reading Dreams of Gods & Monsters right beside you ;)

  9. Posts like these are my favourites :) And why not do it on a Saturday, if most people do theirs on a Sunday, it sets you apart. I’m so desperate to read The Ring and the Crown, I’m so glad you enjoyed it! A lot of reviews I’ve seen have been a bit “unfavourable”. I can’t wait tp read the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy either, though I can’t use the excuse that I want to read the whole trilogy in one go for much longer!
Have fun at wherever you’re going!

    • Awesome to hear! The Ring and the Crown is definitely a bit fluffy at times, but as long as you know that going in, I think it’s still fun :D

      California here I come :D

  10. I like these posts. I tend to read posts in bunches, often not on the original post date, so the timing isn’t a concern for me. I do my weekly reviews on Sundays, but only because in my head weeks run Sun-Sat, and I want anything I read on Sat to be included for that week.

    • Yey, I’m glad :D I kind of want to post on Saturday since then I can link up my book haul in StS too haha

  11. Excited for you! I hope you enjoy your new books!

  12. Nice haul this week. I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone last month. I enjoyed it, even if it started out a bit slow for me. I haven’t read the other books in the series yet. Enjoy your reads :)
Thank you for visiting my StS

  13. Fun books this week! I got Loki’s Wolves, but it will have to go in next week’s Stacking the Shelves post. I also want to read The Forbidden Library. I’m glad to hear that you liked it!

  14. Hmm…maybe split Updates and Spoils & Tribute into two posts? One for Saturday, one for Sunday?

Haha! I snagged Loki’s Wolves same time, same way. Nice book hauls! And schedules? >.> Right…maybe next month, right?
Kel recently posted…All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill (4 stars)My Profile

    • I actually used to do it that way, but then started worrying that Spoils and Tribute wasn’t really interesting on its own :-/ Thoughts?

Haha, score! I think I’ll be able to get back to a schedule in May or June >.>

      • I’d look at it this way: right now, you have two separate dragon pictures, two clearly defined sections of one very long post. Size-wise, it’s probably worth splitting. As far as whether Spoils and Tribute is interesting on its own, I think it’ll do fine, and if it isn’t interesting, at least it won’t be wasting space in your updates post. :)
Kel recently posted…Discussion: Talking Books After the FactMy Profile

        • Haha, but the question is what to do with the stuff under Spoils and Tribute, since it doesn’t really fit with that header…. I smooshed them all together so that I had an extra day when things were tighter, but I’m not as tight on posts these days, haha, so I think I might try splitting them again next week if I remember >.>

  15. Ok so I read The Ring and the Crown yesterday in one sitting. It was good so thanks for the rec – though I have to tell you I’m glad I read your review first or I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much. And come on really she’s trying to break my heart?

Yay! I’m so excited to read Stolen Songbird now! Strange Chemistry’s books never disappoint me- I love all their books so I try to read all the books published by them. :D

  18. Actually these are some of my favorite posts you put on your blog. I read them every week although I don’t always comment. I would be okay with switching them to Saturday from now on.

    • Thank you so much for your feedback! This is the sort of thing that I just don’t realize, hehe. It’s funny when as a blogger you just throw posts out into the world and can’t really tell if people like them or not since apparently stalking my followers is frowned upon ;-)

  19. I really enjoyed the Ring and the Crown too. Was such a fun read and like you said addictive :-) I’m so glad you liked it too. I’ve really yet to see anyone not enjoy it. Of Gods and Monsters!!! EEPS. I can’t wait to read it. I’m a tad scared though. Horizon is such a pretty book. I’ve not heard of it. If you like it I’ll have to add it to my wishlist.

    • I’m terrified of DoGaM but must read!!!!! Australians that have gotten to read it early are making me excited though since they love it!

Horizon is the conclusion of a MG/early YA trilogy Above World that I love :D
