Updates from the Lair 4/12/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, my book haul for the week, books I added to my wish-list (sort of like Waiting on Wednesday), and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

As I’m writing this post, it’s Monday because that’s how on top of things I am this week :D. In reality, it’s just because I’m hopping on a plane on Wednesday and really didn’t want to risk assuming I’d have time to prepare something Friday night like usual. It seems highly likely I will have no time at this conference since it is only a few days! In any case, I’m at a conference this week/weekend which should be fun enough since it’s pretty low pressure (I went last year). I’m hoping to get lots of reading (Dreams of Gods and Monsters!) done on the plane, therefore I’m only guessing what I’ll be reading by the time you read this! Helloooooo future!

Yeah, it’s a weird night, don’t mind me ;-).

My Week

The Ophelia ProphecyI’m reading this one currently (ie early in the week) and hopefully will finish soon! I’m really enjoying it even though it’s technically “romance sci-fi”. I don’t find the romance to be eyeroll-worthy and think I’ll probably end up really liking it. The whole genetically manipulated humanoids taking over the world thing is done quite well, my inner biologist is happy with this sci-fi :D.

Dreams of Gods and Monsters

Of course this is what everyone will be reading this week! I’m going to be listening on audio and therefore going slow. I’m loving it so far! Also, I must admit that I’ve never liked these covers… they don’t really make any sense ya know?

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Also as a special bonus this week, I got to be a part of Fantasy Cafe’s Women in SF&F Month and spread my love McCaffrey this week :D.

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Spoils

Dreams of Gods and Monsters

There isn’t much time to buy books these days ;-). However, I think I’m going to end up with Dreams of Gods and Monsters in every format, since I got the audio and then I still need to get a hardcover to complete my pretty shelf collection…. The shelf collection is also the “lend to friends to push books on them” collection, so it’s completely legit to have three copies of the same book!

Tribute

Fool's Assassin Magic Breaks

:D So much awesome this week!!!! I’m really tempted to take a reading vacation as soon as deadlines are dealt with so that I can read all this awesome. Yes, that is the upcoming Kate Daniels book and I’m sooooo pumped! I also am freaking thrilled to get Fool’s Assassin since I was just planning to pillage it the other week! Pillaging success ;-).

Smaug: Unleashing the Dragon

This is a beautiful coffee-table book about the making of Smaug in the latest Hobbit movie :D. Thank you Harper Design, you know me so well! I am definitely going to be reviewing this for the blog even though it’s not the normal fare since I think that some of you might still be interested?

IMG_1477

I was worried that I was going to miss this set of packages when I went a’traveling, but they made it in time! The top two are Range of Ghosts and Shattered Pillars, the first two books in the recently concluded trilogy by Elizabeth Bear since I need to catch up! The other is  The Goblin Emperor which I’ve heard amazing things about and will be starting asap :D.

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

Chasing Power

“Anya, why are you planning to pillage a book about the energy crisis??” Because surprisingly Chasing Power is not about the energy crisis! It is a fantasy with lies, secrets, and magic :D. I really don’t get the cover, but Bloomsbury has my trust given previous books I’ve read from them ;-).

Next Week’s Reading

Among Thieves Horizon The Goblin Emperor

Let the guessing begin! I have no idea what I’ll be reading next week to be honest since I’m still holding out hope that I also finish Horizon before the week is out. And then I’m thinking I’ll start The Goblin Emperor. Or Among Thieves? Or something else completely? Should I just skip my schedule and read Magic Breaks immediately? ;-)

Happy Reading!

  1. I just realized “Chasing Power” is by Sarah Beth Durst! I read her “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” retelling (“Ice”) a while back and, while it wasn’t amazing, it was a really interesting take on the fairy tale and the writing was decent. Here’s hoping this new one is good!

    • Oo interesting! I’m very curious about this new one now since I really don’t know what to expect from it, haha

  2. ELIZABETH BEAR!! Yes I plan on reading these as soon as I can as well.

  3. I am glad to hear that The Ophelia Prophecy is good. I got that in the mail unsolicited and was kind of unsure about it but now I am curious.

ALSO! Dreams of Gods & Monsters! I seriously need to clear my shelves off and order Laini Taylor’s books so they can be in my house always.

    Happy reading!

    • *fans self* especially if you like *ahem* passionate romance storylines along with cool sci-fi, hehe.

I recently did that, since I had borrowed the first two from the library, but now I finally have the full set, yey!

  4. The Elizabeth Bear books look amazing…..I am going to read up on them on Amazon.

    Have a great week!

Also, Dreams of Gods and Monsters? Totally loving it. I think the people at the laundry mat conciser me crazy after I went nuts over chapter 31. I read it 5 times before I could move on!

    • I’m so pumped for those, I can’t believe I didn’t know about this trilogy previously! I keep eyeing them and trying to fit them in D:

Hehe, I’ve been so slow listening to Dreams and it makes me sad. I keep being in a music mood instead of an audiobook mood, but I’ll be listening to it on the driving trip this weekend!

  5. Not having enough time when you were expecting to have more time is a huge bummer – I’m sorry it got you all out of sorts this week buy hey: better late than never ;-D

HAHA I love how all the world is like reading Dreams of Gods & Monsters…though I’ll admit I wish I’d had more time to read these past few days. Also: whaaa?? You don’t like the covers for the series?? But there’s so pretty and mysterious…like Karou haha XD Oh and that Smaug coffee table book looks incredible!! I’ve never heard of Range of Ghost or Shattered Pillars but I like the covers a lot ♥ Happy Sunday xx

    • Covers: But they don’t make sense D: There is nothing in the books that has blue feathers or red tattoos or yellow horns (horns?????) I agree they are pretty, but I just don’t get them, haha.

  6. I also have Dreams of Gods and Monsters this week. I can’t wait to read it. My brother-in-law would love to get that Smaug book. He loves anything LOTR/Hobbit. Happy weekend!

  8. Dreams of Gods and Monsters YES. I was just at Barnes and Noble and had to let that one go because I already bought a few others :( Can’t wait to read it, though! Planes are the best for getting lots of reading done!

    • I got so much reading done on the plane, it was awesome!!! The five hour flight back and forth definitely helped since I could get really into the books ya know? :D

  9. I have been thinking about starting the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy now that all the books are out.

  10. I’m really excited to see what you think of Horizon. I love that cover. I still haven’t’ gotten my copy of DoGaM. Of course I have no clue when I’ll get around to reading it. I sort of want to reread the first two so it might be a long while.

    • Hehe, I feel like at this point, you might as well just jump into Dreams, otherwise you’ll never finish! ;-) Horizon was awesome btw! Highly recommend that trilogy if you like MG :D

  11. I’m so pumped to read Dreams of Gods & Monsters, except I need to get the book from somewhere…Have fun at your conference!
