Updates from the Lair 4/20/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

So I just got back from California (where I met up with Pabkins of Not Yet Read :D) this past Sunday at about 11pm and as you are reading this (happy Easter to those who celebrate by the way) I’m in Minnesota visiting family! I also got another round of steroid shots in my back on Thursday, then hopped in the car on Friday to go visiting. April is a really busy month so far D: but I did get reading done on the plane as I’d hoped and hopefully lots of reading during the driving this weekend too! How is your April going??

My Week

Horizon by Jenn Reese

I’m so happy with myself for finishing Horizon this past week (on the plane!) just like I’d hoped :D. This was a great conclusion to this trilogy and I really can’t say enough how much I recommend this series to middle-graders and adults who like middle-grade. It’s just such a cool combination of sci-fi and fantasy along with some really great messages about friendship and acceptance.

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

The Goblin Emperor was a bit of a struggle to read while traveling. It is a very thick and political fantasy (with a dash of steampunk). I really liked the world and characters, but I’m just not a fan of court intrigue and really never will be. I definitely see where some of you are coming from in your love for it, but it isn’t quite my cup of tea. I am really hopeful for more in this world though because it is SO COOL!

In the Shadows

As of writing this I haven’t actually started In the Shadows, but that’s what I’m planning to be reading this week as a break between long high fantasies ;-). I’m really excited for the graphic novel incorporation of this one and am just pumped for something rather different!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Door The Foundry's Edge Expiration Day Plus One The Islands of Chaldea

So I have 24 hours of driving this weekend (well, riding) and am aiming for fast and engaging reads. Therefore, I think I’ll be bringing the shorter of the physical review books and aiming to knock out some of these eARCs that should be fast going. If one of these is not actually a fast read, please tell me!!

Also, I’ve decided to join Clean Sweep this May to try to tackle all of these March and April ARCs that have gotten passed by…. May will be my most sane month of the summer and I’m actually on a lower number of research hours than I have been, so I’m tempted to work a little less and recharge at least one or two weeks of May! This will also be the perfect time to get caught up before BEA :D.

Happy Reading!

  1. YAY for California and YAY for meeting up with bloggy friends :-D It still looks like you had a fun-filled week reading-wise as well! The Goblin King sounds awesome…but I can see it not reading all the well while travelling >.< too many distractions! Shadows looks promising too, hope you're enjoying them, as well as this current week's pillage! Happy reading xx

    • Planes are a strange combination of distracting and very isolating ya know? Since if you don’t know the person next to you, it’s five hours of no conversation, but then there is random sound around you >.> Makes for a strange experience for sure, haha.

  2. So much travel! You definitely have been busy. It’s a shame all the court intrigue bogged down The Goblin Emperor, but I’m glad you enjoyed Horizon. :)

Good luck catching up on everything before BEA! Are you going this year?

  3. Are you going to BEA, Anya? I’m trying to decide whether to go to the blogging conference portion of it. Have you been to BEA before?

Have fun in Minnesota visiting your family. I hope the weather is nice for you. Have fun reading, too!

    • I’m very likely going to BEA. I have my press pass and place to stay, but my boyfriend (who is driving) needs to get the week off work still. This will be my first time :D

  4. So glad to see that you’re reading Plus One! I can’t decide if I want to read it, so hopefully your review can give me some more conviction :D See – you’re my guinea pig ;)

    • I haven’t had a chance to start it yet, but hopefully soon! I love being a guinea pig though, so I’ll definitely be fitting it in :D

  5. I’m really looking forward to seeing your thoughts on Plus One! I’ve been eagerly waiting for you to get to it.

    • That’s two votes for Plus One so I definitely will be trying to fit it in :D April definitely destroyed my schedule….

  6. I read Plus One a few weeks ago, so I’m interested to see what you think about it ;)

  7. I’m looking forward to reading The Goblin Emperor.

Also, so much love for Expiration Day! Hope you like it even half as much as I did!

    • Sweet!! I had a false start with it this weekend since I started and realized I really really wanted to read Rebel instead and it just isn’t fair for another book to suffer because of cravings. But I will read it soon!
