Updates from the Lair 5/11/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

So I had planned to have this week go back to having Spoils and Tribute combined with Updates since I wanted to sneak in an extra review, but then I didn’t get anything at all this week, so it worked out great! It’s almost as if what posts I schedule and plan out affects the future >.> <.<. However, I’m actually quite happy since a week where I read way more than I receive is a good week! Anyway, this week has been an odd combination of trying to get lots of work done while also trying to get lots of reading done with the mindset of taking extra time on both but fun fact: I don’t have that extra time no matter how much I think I don’t need sleep. I’m actually really horrible at going without sleep and have no willpower to get up early if I don’t have to…. Anyway, I’m planning on taking several days if not the whole week off next week for Bout of Books and attempting to catch up :D.

My Week

Deep Blue by Jennifer Donnelly

Grrr this book…. I ended up DNF’ing Deep Blue since I just couldn’t take the writing. It ended up feeling very juvenile to me filled with bad puns that didn’t even really seem like they were meant to be puns, they just felt like lazy world-building to me. Also there are only so many pages of description of clothing of underwater humanoids that I can take :-/. Why must mermaid books continue to disappoint me?? I love mermaids!

Plus One by Elizabeth Fama

Look! I told you I would figure out how to fit in Plus One :D. I’m enjoying the writing and dynamics of the world, though the babynapping premise and segregation reasoning both seemed a bit week. Definitely interesting though and I’m glad that you all pressured me into reading it sooner rather than later ;-).

Graduation Day by Joelle Charbonneau

I was lucky to snag a copy of Graduation Day and decided to start it this week and buddy read it. I want to get through it early so that I can do a giveaway for the ARC since they aren’t being widely distributed and I think it should be loved more :D. The question though is this: Joelle is doing an author event after pub date, would you rather have an ARC giveaway in the next week or two to read it early or a signed giveaway after publication in a few months?

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Creature of Moonlight Scan Expiration Day Islands of Chaldea

I’m really really hoping I read these and more next week, but I’d like to hear thoughts if you have read any of them yet. Especially Scan since I haven’t seen much on it which seems like a bad sign at this point >.>.

Happy Reading!

  1. ”It’s almost as if what posts I schedule and plan out affects the future >.> <.<.'' hehe that bit made me LOL Anyways you had a truly productive week despite, you know, needing to sleep and all ;-) It's funny, I hadn't heard about Deep Blue at all before this week and it seems like everyone is having some kind of issue with it D: I'll be avoiding the lure of it's pretty cover and MERMAIDS! One though is a book that I continue to be curious about so I'll definitely need to check it out sooner rather than later! Oh and I *NEED* to read that Joelle Charboneau series too ^^

    • Hehe, I’m glad to give you a laugh :D. Definitely resist Deep Blue’s cover, I found out it was a packaged book after I got it and you can really tell…

  2. I don’t do well without sleep either. I’m an early riser though – I have to get up early for so long that I do it naturally anymore. It’s the staying up that kills me. And the mid-day naps if I’m home. I can sleep whenever and wherever if I’m tired enough. And yay on reading more than you acquired, I love that feeling! Have a great week – hope Bout of Books is going well for you!

    • I keep wishing that I could train myself to get up early, but my morning brain will try to eek out as many extra minutes in bed as possible, haha. My most creative and productive time is often in the evening, such a night owl ;-).

  3. Creature of Moonlight has a beautiful cover and I used to read a lot of Diana Wynne Jones, so I’ll be especially excited to see what you think of those two :)

  4. Interesting…most reviews I’ve seen have loved Deep Blue and disliked Plus One. Definitely read Islands of Chaldea if you can!

    • Haha, Plus One I ended up not loving anyway, and Deep Blue seems to be really hit or miss, it just didn’t work for me :(

  5. Hah – I DNFed Deep Blue as well – but oddly enough my girlfriend Tina is really liking it. LOL

    • Hehe, I just saw that review, well I’m glad she liked it and that you didn’t have to read it ;-)

  6. I was disappointed by Deep Blue too. I enjoyed it for the light reading but I wanted SO much more from it than was provided. It felt very MG to me. I have no idea why good mermaid books are so hard to come by. I just read Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama and it was very well done. Have you tried that one?

    • Right?? I had been hoping for more and just didn’t like the writing, and I do like MG books, but it wasn’t the kind that I’m interested in :(. I haven’t read Monstrous Beauty yet, though I do have it sitting on the shelf, haha.

  7. Man, super sucks to hear that about Deep Blue. Why does it seem to difficult to find a satisfying mermaid book?!

Regarding signed ARCs… I was just thinking about this earlier today actually. Well, sort of. The thing is, I have several signed ARCs, all personalized to me. But then I eventually get the hardcovers and want to get THOSE signed (and personalized to me), but then I have two copies of the same book, and I only need one. It’s hard enough trying to figure out what to do with an ARC after publication, let alone one that’s signed to an individual. =/ So, I think my answer is that I’d rather just have an unsigned one before publication date, so I can read it sooner.

    • Right? Why are mermaids so much more difficult to write about than other fantasy tropes??

That was what I was curious about too, though I’d obviously not have it personalized in this case ;-). It seems like the fun of ARCs is reading them early, so I think I’ll try to sneak in the giveaway sooner.

  8. I’ve actually heard that Scan is pretty good; I’m excited to see what you think of it :) And YAY for Plus One! I’m definitely feeling a bit better about buying a copy now. Can’t wait to read your review! Sorry to hear about Deep Blue… mermaids are iffy for me too. I love them, but every single book I’ve read is just SO cheesy D:

    • Oo, that’s great to hear! I was so excited to get approved by Penguin but then couldn’t get it to it in the two days before pub date, haha.

  9. Adelynne says:

Yeah, I didn’t like Deep Blue either… :( And I had such high hopes for it- it’s so pretty! I liked Plus One too! :D

    • So disappointing! Though now I want to try Fama’s Monstrous Beauty, haha.

      • Adelynne Chang says:

Me too :D I heard that it was really good, so I might give it a try soon too! Will you write a review for it after you read it?

        • Definitely! I’m trying to review all books I read these days, though it’ll probably be a while before I get to it D:

  10. Kristen says:

Graduation Day! asdfghjklqwertyuiop! LOL I have a copy of it myself. I just wanted the opportunity to fangirl for a moment.
