Updates from the Lair 5/18/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Greetings lovely people! I come to you relaxed and slightly caught up on life after taking a few days off work this week to read, go to the dentist (got a crown D:), and get my hair cut :D. I didn’t read as many books as I had aimed to, turns out I really can only read one book a day when I have other stuff going on. Good to know! This past week was my week to get some extra reading done and so next week is the week to get extra work/research stuff done! I shall be doing all the science :D.

My Week

The Castle Behind the Thorns by Merrie Haskell Earth Star by Janet Edwards Expiration Day by William Campbell Powell Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor The Foundry's Edge by Cam Baity and Benny Zelkowicz School for Good and Evil

Instead of doing my normal paragraph about each book, I’ll just brag that I finished six books this week and my two favorites were The Foundry’s Edge and Earth Star even though they have my least favorite covers, haha. Seriously though, they rocked. Reviews for all will be forthcoming!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne Hungry by H. A. Swain

I was very lucky to receive Midnight Thief for review this week and I just can’t resist jumping right in. I’ve actually already read a couple of chapters, and I’ve already read the prequel novella Poison Dance, so I’m really happy :D. I’m also planning to read Hungry this week with Kristen and Kelley :D.

Next Audiobook

Dark Triumph The Coldest Girl in Coldtown Allegiant

This is what I really need help with though! I just finished the two audiobooks I was in the middle of, so it is time to pick the next one! I purchased Dark Triumph, Coldest Girl, and Allegiant through Audible already, so which do you think I should listen to next??

Happy Reading!

    • Haha, so that’s the kind of sad thing, even though I spent a week doing (almost) nothing but reading, I barely made a dent in my overdue review books…. I still have 16 books that are past their pub date….

  2. Did I miss your review for Dreams of Gods and Monsters??

    • Nope! I just scheduled things out so that I was covered for BEA, haha, it’s coming up ;-). It’s also on Goodreads already :)

  3. Yay for six books! And that reminds me…I really need to get my hair cut too. Was Castle Behind Thorns any good?

You have a copy of Midnight Thief? So jealous! I just read Poison Dance last week and I’m pretty excited.

No question. Listen to Dark Triumph. :)

    • Castle Behind the Thorns was definitely interesting, but just an okay middle grade fantasy, nothing particularly amazing but enjoyable. Have you read her Dragon Slayers book?

Indeed I was able to snag it, I could let someone borrow it though >.> Email me ;-)

      I’ve started Dark Triumph :D

      • I haven’t read the Dragon Slayers book yet, though I’ve been keeping an eye out at the library. I have read her 12 Dancing Princesses retelling, “The Princess Curse,” which was pretty much the same- not amazing, but definitely an enjoyable middle grade fantasy.

Could I?! O.O Wait, no, bad Kel. Remember those stacks upon stacks of books you need to read (and organize) before getting more new books and/or spending money on shipping? …Drat it. Now if I were going to be at BEA Friday, that would be a different story. >.> (Not that any of these good intentions stopped me from throwing my name in the hat for a signed hardcover of Midnight Thief. Yes, I found a giveaway for it already.)

What you do you think of Dark Triumph so far? Did you read the first book in the series already?

        • Haha, well, just think about it ;-)

Yup, I read Grave Mercy last year some time and enjoyed it. I’m liking the audiobook for Dark Triumph, I just hope it doesn’t make me cry too much while driving, haha.

  4. I really like the pictures of the books you read. I often skim over the paragraphs to find the names of the books, but this makes it so much easier. 6 books in a week that is amazing. The Castle Behind Thorns is one I want to read.

  5. I might not have gotten into the book but the narration on The Coldest Girl in Coldtown was awesome!

    • Sweet! I’m hesitant since I’ve heard from a couple of people that it is a hit or miss book, but I went to the event with Holly Black and the first couple of pages that she read out loud were so intriguing. I haven’t read any Holly Black yet either and feel horrible about that, haha.

  6. Oh, to have the time to read a book a day again! I’m jealous (but only a little. You deserved some time off.) And that’s an impressive batch of books you read — most of which I’m unfamiliar with, so thanks for the introduction. Have a great week!

    • I had kind of hoped that I would make myself sick of reading so I’d be able to concentrate on research this coming week, but it just made me want to keep doing nothing but reading >.> I wish that I had thought of this/been this addicted when I was in grade school and had summers off! So much wasted reading time now that I look back!

  7. Eeeep, you read SO many AWESOME books this week, I’ll be looking out for A LOT of your reviews :D *ahem* DoG&M *cough* The School for Good & Evil *splutter* XD Awww you are totally lucky to get the Midnight Thief!! I was declined *sniff* but I’ll live vicariously through your review when you get to it haha Oh and I’d love to help you audio book wise but I still need to read Grave Mercy myself. (I NEED to though. SOON!!) As for Coldest Girl in Coldtown and Allegiant…well they were pretty huge letdowns for me so it’s hard for me to recommend them >.< I will say that I hope you have WAY better luck with them than I did though ♥ Happy reading Anya xxx

    • I was declined for Midnight Thief on NetGalley too, but the physical ARC policy for Disney seems to completely different! Have you requested a physical ever?

Oof, I’m figuring that Allegiant is going to be a weird one, but I need to find out what everyone is talking about and finish that series, haha. On Twitter Dark Triumph is winning, so I’ll probably do that and hope to get Mortal Heart at BEA :D

  8. I hope we enjoy Hungry. I’m page 62 and I enjoy the concept (surprisingly) but something about the writing or characters is not coming off that well to me so far. Hopefully that’ll change. I am dying eager to start Midnight Thief. The people I’ve seen that have already read it loved so yay! I can’t wait :-)

I’m impressed you can read a book a day! I can’t do that even when I don’t have other stuff to do. My eyes start hurting and I get antsy.

    • I’m liking it too! It’s fun to read it from a tech perspective since it is actually pretty accurate in what kind of technology people are trying to create these days!

I can only read a book a day when I’m not working, not normally! I took four days off this week for a reading vacation since I really needed a break after the semester finished ;-). Normally it takes me three days for a young adult I’d say. I definitely have built up the endurance to read straight through when I have the time though, I don’t know how but it is nice for traveling!
