Updates from the Lair 5/4/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Welcome to May! At the beginning of April I was saying that I just needed to get through that month and look, I was right! I’m done with finals, papers are all turned in, and now my next deadline is months away. Those deadlines are for some pretty important and big things, but as long as I plan things out, everything will be easy to accomplish ;-). I took the opportunity to sneak in some extra reading this week in celebration of finals being over aaaaaand have an exciting announcement that some of you have already guessed: I’m going to BEA! I’ll be there Thursday and Friday all day, so let me know if you want to meet up!

Also I made these:

Homemade Pots

They are my first attempt at throwing pots and I think turned out pretty darn good! I have plans for a couple of them already ;-).

My Week

Blood and Iron

I’m finally digging into Blood and Iron. I feel kind of horrible for how long it was just barely started and how behind I am on eARCs, but whatever! It’s a fun story so far and an intriguing fantasy world. There are some parallels to our world that I’m curious to see develop. This is from a smaller publisher, but definitely recommended for fans of epic fantasy of the meat and potatoes sort ;-).

The Falconer

I also started The Falconer and am buddy reading with Katie from Doing Dewey! I like a story about killing fairies, quite refreshing after all the lovey ones I’ve read recently ;-). Also I love broken characters so I’m interested to see where things go for Aileana! Another small pub (in the US) book, go me and reading the small pub books :D.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Deep Blue The Wizard's Promise After the End

All right, I know that I once again failed to take your recommendations and requests into account this week and I’m really sorry. I am possibly reading Plus One this weekend! However, in an attempt to stop feeling so behind on things, I’m going to give up on catching up with April at the moment and focus on May. So! Which May release should I read first??

Happy Reading!

  1. Woot! You made it to May and YAYYYY BEA!! We must meet up at some point, I’m SUPER excited to meet you!! Since we love pretty much the same books I’m sure we’ll bump into each other throughout the event XD I’ll be there Thursday, Friday and Sat – we get to NYC on Tuesday Night so hopefully I’ll see you!

And look at you making pots! Wow, they look awesome, especially for your first time. I’m impressed! I’m also quite pumped that you’re enjoying The Falconer – planning on getting into that one soon. Same goes for After the End :-) Fabulous looking week Anya – WTG!

    • Kicking and screaming, but I definitely made it! It’s kind of nice how time keeps trucking on no matter how crazy things get ;-)

OMG yes! You will be able to find me in all the sf/f lines, haha. But let’s seriously email and coordinate once it gets closer? I need hugs!

  2. Wow, I think those pots are fantastic! I hope you have an awesome time at BEA :)

    • Also, I had a ton of fun reading The Falconer as well! I don’t get to discuss books while I’m reading them as often as I’d like, but it’s one of my favorite ways to talk about books. It’s just so much easier to share detailed opinions when you’re in the thick if it. And I would love to read more books by the publisher! I don’t know about your copy, but mine contained a letter from someone at the publisher praising the book and I thought that if the book was as good as the letter, I was in for a treat. I love the idea of reading a book someone at the publishing house is really attached too.

      • So agreed, it’s nice to be able to safely discuss events in the books without worrying about spoilers too! My copy was actually through LibraryThing’s giveaways, so it had a “Congrats, you won!” paper instead, oh well ;-)

    • Thanks!! I’m excited since I just glazed four more today and I’m hoping they turn out. I kind of messed up which glazes I was planning to use since my brain was a bit addled, but oh well ;-)

  3. Awesome ceramics work! Did you take a class somewhere or is this a return to a long forgotten hobby? I need to beg my cousin to teach me once her finals are over. It will doubtless be more entertaining for her than productive for me, but it looks so fun!

And I would love to meet up at BEA! If you were there on the right day. :P Oh well, maybe next year?

    • Thanks :D I’m taking a six week class at the community center! Another grad student organized a grad student only class which has been a lot of fun, I’m kind of hoping that another class starts in the summer, but it is also a lot of time that I don’t exactly have, haha. It’s not too bad getting started, this was my first batch ever after all and they don’t look so bad ;-)

      Next year for sure :D

  4. Is no one else going to question the Plus One thing? Is there something big here or am I reading things wrong?

  5. Adelynne Chang says:

OH MY GOSH! You’re going to BEA??? You’re so lucky! Will you make a post on how it was? I really want to go but I can’t……. :(

    • Sure! I’ll only be there for two days, but I’ll definitely be doing a wrap-up and highlights post :D

  6. The pottery looks lovely! Do you own your own kiln?

    • Oh no no, this is my first pottery class ;-) I don’t think my apartment complex would allow a kiln haha. The community center three blocks from my campus has a whole setup in the basement with seven wheels and glaze and everything, it’s awesome :D

  7. Have fun at BEA! It sounds like lots of bloggers are going to be there.

  8. Hope to meet you there!! :)

    • Yey, definitely :D I feel like I should do a post of pictures like you did last year since no one will be able to recognize me from my one picture, haha. Are you going to the Mac party?

  9. I’d love to meet up at BEA if you have a chance. I’m probably going to be there Wednesday-Sunday.

Glad to see you’re enjoying the Falconer. I loved it and can’t wait for the sequel.

I’m curious about Blood and Iron. I almost bought it last time I was at the bookstore. It looks really good.
