Updates from the Lair 6/15/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Greetings Earthlings! It’s been a bit of a rough week in the world of Anya I’m afraid, but hopefully next week will improve. I apparently managed to screw up my back at BEA way worse than I had previously, so I haven’t really been sleeping >.>. But in happy news, Ashley from Creative Whim gave the blog a bit of spiffing up. Don’t notice any difference? That’s because she did a great job :D. There were some background issues that needed to be tweaked, but she also fixed the font and background image and updated the social media icons, woohoo! I also found out this week that I won the YA Highway Genre-Specific Blog award, which is the first vote-based award the blog has won so I’m pretty proud :).

My Week

Take Back the SkiesI decided to try to tackle my physical TBR books this week and started with Take Back the Skies. Unfortunately, I ended up DNF’ing at page 90. Things were pretty unbelievable in a bad way already at that point, in that a girl who had never pick-pocketed before suddenly became uber-skilled at it and then was able to run away from two grown men after she had been described as being too short to keep up with her guy friend. The world sounds like it could be cool, but there just wasn’t enough description for me to latch on to ya know?

Rain by Amanda SunI then got approved for Rain by Amanda Sun and decided to start it right away because I’ve been quite looking forward to this sequel. I had been worried the illustrations wouldn’t come out well on my eReader, but they look great! I’m still orienting myself in the beginning and trying to remember what happened in the previous book, but I’m enjoying this one for it’s lighter tone.

The Thousand NamesFinally, I’m about halfway through The Thousand Names since I’ve heard such great things about it. I must admit that I’m not super enthralled by military fiction and this one is proving to be heavier on the military than the fantasy. Does that change in the second half of the book? I’m going to finish, but it might be slow going if things don’t get more fantasy oriented.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Kiss of Deception Traitor's Blade The Fog of Forgetting

I think I’m going to jump into The Kiss of Deception this week since I was so looking forward to it and want to know what everyone is talking about! Then I think I’ll start on two of the July books I got at BEA, Traitor’s Blade and The Fog of Forgetting. So basically, I’m in a fantasy mood and am mixing it up by switching between YA, Adult and MG, hehe. Have you read any of these yet?

Happy Reading!

  1. I notice you’re reading more and more adult these days just like I am. Isn’t it refreshing! I need to read The Thousand Names so glad to hear you are enjoying it. I’m working on Traitor’s Blade right now and LOVING it. Love yes love…you will you must or I will heap awful things upon you *cackles madly

    • I am :D I blame Ardi and Nita mostly ;-)

Omg yey, Traitor’s Blade is next on the list as soon as I finish Rain!

  2. Ooh! The blog does look spiffier! But then, Ashley always does amazing work, right? And congrats on the blog award! :D

That’s unfortunate about Take Back the Skies, but not entirely surprising. I’ve been seeing a lot of similar reviews cropping up.

I hope your back feels better!

    • Yey, thanks :D It is such a relief for all the little things to finally be the way I wanted them for the past year!

Yeah, I hate it when stereotypes fit, but I’ve just never read anything strong from really young authors….

  3. I actually did notice a small change in your social media icons last time I visited but I wasn’t sure if I was just noticing an older change so I didn’t mention it >..< I'll be looking out for your review! Have a great week Anya xxxx

    • Whaaa?! The last half of my comment disappeared D: I said your new social media icons look great! Oh and I’m sorry you hurt your back so bad at BEA – I sure hope you feel better soon!! I’m also waiting on a copy of Traitor’s Blade to arrive in my mailbox (soon I hope!) and as much as I had issues with Ink, I’ll admit to still being curious about Rain – and seeing how much you seem to be enjoying it makes me wish I’d requested an arc myself hehe and THATS what it means ^^ when I said I’d be looking out for your review O.O

      • And don’t mind me and replying out of order to comments >.> Sorry about that, it hasn’t happened before right??

I definitely had issues with Ink as well, but for some reason these book are very cotton candy to me, I know they aren’t good for me but they are just so fluffy and delicious ;-)

    • Haha, nope, trying to clean up the clutter a bit (does anyone actually use LinkyFollowers??) and make it more obvious since I have people asking how to subscribe strangely frequently ;-). Do you like the social media update?

  4. I still need to read “The Thousand Names.” It’s been on my To Read pile for what feels like forever!

Also, you’re going to LOVE “Traitor’s Blade.” It’s such a fun book! :D

    • Haha, I felt the same with about Thousand Names. It’s so nice to finally get to a book you’ve been eyeing for over a year!

Yey, I’ll make sure that one is next :D

  5. Ugh, back pain is the WORST! I hope you start feeling better soon ~*hugs*~

    • Right?? I’m getting into this horrible cycle of not exercising because my back hurts, but then I lose muscle and am more likely to further injure my back, etc etc… I’m trying though!
