Updates from the Lair 6/21/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hey everyone! How was your week?? If I’m being honest, I have to admit that this week kind of sucked for me. I almost certainly have a pinched nerve in my back and my spine specialist has referred me to a neurosurgeon to start talking about surgically removing some of the disc that is bulging out. The worst part, though, is that I can’t lay flat without a lot of pain, but getting an MRI requires you to lay flat for 45 minutes without moving…. Yeah, that was a REALLY bad 45 minutes. If they for some reason need to do another one, I’m going to ask to be sedated I think…. On the plus side, I read some fun books this week :D.

My Week

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. PearsonI read Kiss of Deception over two days this week and it was quite enjoyable! The fantasy world has one of my favorite things: ruins of a past civilization that was highly successful before mysteriously vanishing. The main plot is a typical princess escaping marriage and then adventuring kind of plot with hints of a love triangle, but I really enjoyed the narration style and writing. Highly addictive and I can’t wait for book two.

Traitor's BladeI then sped through Traitor’s Blade. I feel so awesome for mostly sticking to my reading plan for the week :D. Traitor’s Blade is a great banter-filled swashbuckling fantasy though it gets pretty dark at times. This is another world that I’m very excited to see more of in the second book. Yes, I’ve just been reading lots of great fantasy lately ;-).

Shattering the Ley by Joshua PalmatierFinally, I’ve now started Shattering the Ley which is coming out July 1st. It’s been a bit of a slow start, but the magic system revolves around ley lines and has a steampunk kind of feel but with magic instead of steam >.>. I’m sure there is a subgenre classification, but I can’t think of it at the moment, hehe. Has anyone else started on this for review?

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Fog of Forgetting The Shadow Throne The Adjacent

I didn’t get to The Fog of Forgetting last week, so I’ll be reading that as a break between adult books this week! Then I’m thinking I’ll try either The Shadow Throne or The Adjacent but I can’t decide which, thoughts?

Happy Reading!

  1. So sorry to hear about your back! Hope the MRI leads to something useful…

Shattering the Ley sounds really interesting, be curious to see what you make of it!

    • Me too! So far I’ve got a referral to a neurosurgeon, so we’ll see!

I must admit that Shattering the Ley has not impressed me so far…

  2. I think the term for Shattering the Ley might be New Weird? But I’m not sure – i know thats when SF and Fantasy are blended so science magic blend. Anyways so glad you liked Kiss of Deception. I think Tina might be reading that one – so since you loved it I’ll tell her to bump it up in her queue because she is so in need of a GOOD read right now.

    • Oh yeah, that might be it then. Though to be honest it isn’t really working for me right now…. Omg yes Tina will adore Kiss of Deception!

  3. Oh, I’m so sorry about the back pain, Anya. I think that must be some of the worst pain especially if you can’t lay down comfortably. I hope they can fix it soon. The Kiss of Deception and Traitor’s Blade both look especially good. I hope you get some great reading done and have less back pain this week.

  4. Eeek! I know all about your backpain and it is no fun at all! Good news is they have come so far with surgery these days it is often a simple procedure with limited downtime. Hopefully it won’t be bad at all.

Tip: Get a few audiobooks ready. Doctor is going to want you to do alot of walking…

  5. Glad you enjoyed Traitor’s Blade! I’ll be starting Shattering the Ley soon too, I hope – I’m a bit behind on my review books!

    • Me too, the meds have been helping fortunately! We put blackout shades up at the boy’s place and I’ve finally been able to catch up on sleep this weekend at least.

I hope Traitor’s Blade shows up soon, lots of fun! Haha, don’t mind me destroying your TBR shelf ;-)
