Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Greetings friends! I’ve got an appointment with a neurosurgeon scheduled, so hopefully I’ll have my pinched nerve in my back figured out by the end of the summer. Other than that, things have been pretty quiet and I’ve just been trucking away at research and reading. It has been getting fairly warm around my part of Michigan and I’m not much of a fan of warm humidity, so I’ve been hiding inside a bit ;-).

My Week

The Fog of ForgettingI started The Fog of Forgetting this week and thought things were going well for a while. Then I started getting annoyed by little things and not so little things and ultimately decided to stop at page 119 since I just wasn’t enjoying myself. This one could be a fun middle grade fantasy for kids who aren’t very well read in the genre, but there were just too many annoying tropes for me.

The Lascar's DaggerI have been riding the bus this past week and therefore decided to start on The Lascar’s Dagger during my daily commute (I never had much reason to ride the bus previously, but now I’m loving the reading time before work!). I accepted this one for review consideration and it was published back in March, so it is fun to be getting to it. I’m enjoying the world and characters a lot!

Dark TriumphI’ve been listening to the audiobook of Dark Triumph for the past month or so and mostly only making progress when I drive the two hours to and from the boyfriend’s place. However, I’m nearing the end and I recently realized that Dark Triumph quite successfully got me out of my audiobook funk! I’m looooooving this one so much more than Grave Mercy even since Sybella is great and so is Beast. There was a certain very difficult conversation on my drive on Friday and I just kept thinking how much I absolutely love Beast!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Fire Wish The Queen of the Tearling

This coming week I’m going to be reading The Fire Wish with Kristen from My Friends are Fiction :D. I’m excited since I really like the idea of Jin and a non-typical fantasy setting! I think I’ll also start The Queen of the Tearling (or restart more accurately) since I got a lovely hardcover this week and really enjoyed the first chapter that I read all those months ago. Anyone read either yet?

Happy Reading!

  1. I am honestly curious about your thoughts on The Fire Wish. I read it, and I wasn’t too happy. I want to see your unique spin on the novel.

    • Intriguing. I’m at about 75% and enjoying it well enough. I saw the twist coming, so that was a bit meh, but there isn’t anything particularly bothering me yet. I’ll let you know when I finish my review and then we can chat ;-)

  2. Humidity is evil.

I’m glad you’re enjoying Dark Triumph! And yay for getting out of funks! And I just read a good review of The Fire Wish over at The Eater of Books. I’m hoping you enjoy it!

  3. I’m so excited that you like Dark Triumph more than Grave Mercy! I was really disappointed by it considering the concept, so I’m glad you think the sequel was better executed!

    • Oh definitely! I wasn’t a big fan of the court intrigue plot of Grave Mercy since that bores me, but Dark Triumph is all adventure and fighting and awesome :D

  4. I hope you LOVE The Queen of the Tearling! I thought that was such an awesome book. Great main character.

    • I definitely loved the first chapter :D. I was a bit annoyed that part of it got spoiled at a pub breakfast when they were pitching it, but I’m pretty sure I’ll still love it ;-)

  5. The Fire Wish looks seriously awesome – can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it! The only books I’ve read with a jin as a major character were the Bartimaeus books by Jonathan Stroud. I loved those ones and I’m excited to see if jin will become a more popular creature feature in fantasy novels.

    • I’ve read the first five chapters and wow it is great so far! It definitely seems to be the year of the jin with all the fire books coming out!

  6. So glad to hear you liked Dark Triumph even more than Grave Mercy! I’ve been meaning to read it forever and with Mortal Heart coming out soon I really need to…Also both books you’re planning on reading this week are very high on my TBR. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them! Happy reading! :)

    • I just finished Dark Triumph and omg so much love! It worked for me sooooo much better than Grave Mercy :D
