Updates from the Lair 6/8/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello lovelies! Wow, crazy couple of weeks huh? Sorry about the site downtime last weekend, I was still traveling for BEA and so didn’t even realize there was an issue until I went to write a post and couldn’t haha. I got it sorted out with my host and it won’t be a problem in the future :). I’m back from BEA and slowly recovering (read: sleeping as much as I can!). I’m of course also preparing to travel some more to a conference focused on science and technology education where I’ll be presenting an app that I made (gulp!). Hopefully soon I’ll have an app on the App store and everything :D. I’m also really grateful to have been nominated in the genre-blogging category of the YA Highway awards. The voting is over so we all just have to wait to find out the results ;-).

My Week

The Scroll of Years by Chris Willrich

I finally finished Scroll of Years this week :D. I started it on my way to BEA and then was completely unable to read anything on the way back (totally not the book’s fault, I just stared out the window and slept >.>). I really loved the writing and world, but felt strangely disconnected from the characters almost because of how poetic the writing was, anyone out there feel that too? I’m just crazy aren’t I? *sigh*

Gasp by Lisa McMann

I also had to buy Gasp the day it came out this week and then progressed to reading the entire book on Wednesday evening. It’s a nice short 250-ish pages and very fast-paced, but I still didn’t expect to read it that fast! I adored it just as I have adored this trilogy. It’s certainly not for everyone, but I love the characters and the mystery plot based around seeing a vision of an accident and needing to stop it. Review to come of course ;-). Note that this is totally a success towards my goal of reclaiming instant book gratification ;-).

Magic Breaks

I then decided to start Magic Breaks because it is my most anticipated summer read and darn it, I read what I want! ;-). I couldn’t stand the idea of it getting pushed to the side because I’m overdue on other things, so I’m just going to read it and love it and then not have to worry anymore. My brain got so happy as soon as I started it, since I love this world and characters so much. Things are getting so intense!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this and last week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Take Back the Skies The Silk Map The Thousand Names

While my eARC pile is completely beyond hope at this point, I’m determined to get caught up on my physical review copy pile and even get ahead! Therefore, I’ll be starting with Take Back the Skies because it was just published and I was sent a nice ARC of it. Then I’ll be reading The Silk Map because omg I need to. And finally, I’ll be FINALLY reading The Thousand Names because I have book two for review and need to catch up! I’ll be on planes this coming week, so which of these is best for plane rides?

Happy Reading!

My eARCs are also beyond hope. I always try to think about some new strategy how to catch up but …
The Thousand Names is best for plane ride! It was my favorite adult fantasy novel in 2014. The time will fly away and it will be time for landing. ;)

    • Yeah, I some how think that this summer I’ll get caught up and then reality comes crashing in >.>

Sounds good! I was thinking that would be the one to bring on the plane, I’m so excited!

  2. I came looking for your BEA recap, Anya! Are you going to do one? I love hearing all the stories and seeing all the photos, so I hope so!

Hope you get more reading time soon. We’ve all been so crazed on the blog that there’s been precious little time for reading or blogging either, but hopefully things will be back to normal soon.

    • I am! I just completely flailed this week since it was right back to work on Monday and I needed time to process ;-). It’ll be up on Thursday with pictures :D

I’m totally counting on plane time to get some more reading done, haha. This summer is going to absolutely mad, but in a good way hopefully!

  3. hahaha yup: recovering from BEA involved a lot of sleeping – mixed in with some resting, some lazing around and of course lots of couch time XD As for your bookish news well, you ALWAYS read or plan to read the most interesting and usually new-to-me books ever! I have immediate plans to go look up all the unknowns here and see if the get added on my TBR. Hint: they probably will. Have an awesome week Anya! xxxxx

    • Omg so much sleep! I didn’t get to sleep in all week since I had to go straight back to work, but then we slept til noon on Saturday >.> *no regrets*

  4. I hope you’ll enjoy The Thousand Names! I LOVED this book. It basically changed my view of military fantasy forever :)

    • Awesome!! I haven’t read any military fantasy really I think, but I’ve heard such great things that I’m pumped! I think that’ll be next ;-)

  5. Good luck catching up on all your sleep! And definitely read what you want. I’m behind on my eARC’s right now, too, but I have so many great books waiting on my shelves…I can’t bring myself to feel too bad about it. ;)

    • Exactly, plus if I tried to catch up on eARCs, I wouldn’t be able to read anything else for months D:

  6. The Silk Map – great title and cover, I will have to check it out! I’m glad you had fun at BEA but no wonder you couldn’t read on the way back. I’m sure you were at the saturation point!
