Updates from the Lair 7/20/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

I’m writing this post a bit earlier since my flight is delayed getting home and the airport seems like a great place to get caught up on blogging ;-). The other reason is because as you read this I’m somewhere in Minnesota where the internet availability is incredibly spotty since the boy’s parents have been resistant to wifi, ha. Anyway, I went to Canada this week and presented my research for the first time and it went absolutely awesome! I got lots of questions and people expressing interest and ideas for future work along with compliments on my public speaking :D. I was horrendously nervous beforehand, but I had practiced so much that the actual presentation was actually quite fun. I need to work on speaking slower under pressure, but that’s a bit hard to practice much without pressure, hehe. I did get some reading done on the plane rides, but one was overnight and I gave in to sleep not too far in, oh well!

My Week

The House of the Four Winds GiveawayThe prologue for The House of the Four Winds was actually my favorite part and I was a bit disappointed that the rest of the book didn’t keep up that fun and fresh approach to swashbuckling adventure. That being said, overall the book was quite enjoyable and definitely recommended for when you are in the mood for swashbuckling with a bit of magic. Also, I made a Fan Art Up post-it art for it :D. Keep an eye out for an awesome giveaway and review coming in a week or two ;-).

Trial by Fire I have also been reading Trial by Fire here and there. My reading group gave up on it which makes me a bit sad since I’m quite enjoying the mix of science and magic once Lily gets to the alternate world. I’m not sure how I’m going to classify this one once it is review time since it is fantasy with some pretty accurate science behind it plus parallel worlds :D. Also, how much interest is there for a giveaway of this ARC?

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Scorched City of a Thousand Dolls The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her own Making The Mirror Empire Storm Siren by Mary Weber

I’m so indecisive help! I got City of a Thousand Dolls and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland from the library, so those are exciting. I’ve been eyeing Scorched ever since I got approved for the sequel and am in a dragon mood. I just got The Mirror Empire in the mail and am so so excited about apocalypse in fantasy books and finally I have a set review date for Storm Siren and have heard good things so I feel like I should get started on that. Since I’ll be riding six hours a day in the car for several days next week, you can pick a couple, but tell me which you think I should read next please!

Happy Reading!

  1. I’m really glad you had a positive reaction to your presentation! So happy for you!

I really like you’re reading list! I haven’t quite made up my mind if I want to read House of Four Winds yet, but Trial by Fire is something that has caught my eye. You’re thoughts on reading it has really made me want to read Trial by Fire!

I wish I could help recommend a book for you to read next on your list, but sadly I haven’t read/heard of any of those. They all look amazing though, so I can’t wait to see the reviews you have for them! Happy reading!

  2. Aw, I’m sorry House of Four Winds didn’t awe and amaze. But at least you’re enjoying Trial by Fire! I’ve heard good things about it so far. :)

Congrats on surviving the lecture (and the travel)!

    • I can see others really loving House of the Four Winds, but I really wanted that humor from the prologue to continue, oh well!

  3. I”m glad to hear that your presentation went well! I hope you like Trial by Fire, I’m really excited to read it. The only book I’ve read out of the list is Scorched, and I really enjoyed it. I haven’t read that many dragon books before, but you should definitely read it sometime soon!

    • Scorched is in my read immediately pile, unfortunately there are about ten books in that pile and I don’t have clones D: But I’ll keep trying to get to it!

  4. “The Mirror Empire” is phenomenal. It’s not light reading, but features incredibly unique worldbuilding and is definitely worth the effort. Enjoy!

  5. Congrats on your presentation going well! Nice fanart. :) I’ve been looking forward to Storm Siren, I hope it’s as good as it looks.

  6. Eeps–I’ve been holding off on reading Trial by Fire because I thought our group was going to read it, haha. Is it any good? I’ve been fairly eager to start. Hopefully after HoF :-) I got the Fairyland book too. I’m really excited about it. Great haul! And that is so great that your speech went wonderfully! I am so horrible at public speaking.

    • So did you find time to read Trial by Fire yet hun?? I’m really curious to hear your thoughts given everyone else’s reactions, ha.

  7. Awww BIG CONGRATS on doing so well in Canada with presenting your research and getting some amazing feedback. Public speaking is a nightmare for me and I also tend to speak WAY too quickly XD

I’m sorry you were a bit underwhelmed with House of the Four Winds but glad you still found some fun in it. I’m curious to see how our thoughts will compare when I get into it (soon) Trial by Fire is another one I’ll be sinking my teeth into in a bit so I’m glad you’re having better luck with it than your reading group LOL

And as for your future reading woes, well: I just finished Scorched and mostly enjoyed it. Dragons + sci-fi/time-travel = cool! Fairyland is one of my favorites so I’m very curious how you’ll do with it! I’m still waiting on my copy of City of a Thousand Dolls to ship out AND waiting to see if I’ll be approved for Storm Siren so it looks like you can not go wrong with your upcoming reads in my book XD The Mirror Empire is a new one for me though but it sounds cool! Whatever you decide, HAPPY READING! x

    • Haha, so I just finished my second presentation and everyone said that I spoke at a good pace so that’s one thing fixed!

Oo, I keep trying to get to Scorched and failing, so I’ll keep trying! I just finished the first Fairyland book and OMG I NEED THE SECOND NOW!
