Updates from the Lair 7/6/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

This week was so strange for me. I didn’t feel very productive on Monday, so I stayed late at work Tuesday and brought some home to finish Tuesday night. So now I feel nice and productive at work, but between that and driving out to spend the holiday with the boyfriend, I didn’t have any evenings to myself to read D:. This has left me feeling a bit itchy and wanting to request all the books because some how that translates into being able to read more in the strange, book-deprived part of my brain ;-).

My Week

The Fire WishI started reading The Fire Wish with a few people on Twitter this week. As with many group reads, we’re lagging a bit behind the plan, but I’m really enjoying it so far! The Fire Wish is doing a great job pulling off a fantasy set in the Middle East but not overemphasizing it. The characters occasionally make references to Allah and regularly praying throughout the day, in the same way that fantasy set in Medieval Europe just assumes it is normal to be set there ;-). The jin are also really awesome and I’m so pumped to see what happens next.

HoundedI finished up my last audiobook, Dark Triumph, early this week, so I decided to use up my saved Audible credits and grab Hounded by Kevin Hearne. One of my friends who enjoys reading speculative fiction as well made an inside joke out of recommending this series to me last year. He recommended it multiple times without realizing it and then by the fourth time I reminded him he has already told me about the series, I realized he was being funny ;-). And then he had a “but no seriously” moment to once again point out that I need to read this series. So finally, look Kaben, I’m reading it! And I’m loooooooving the audiobook. The narration is absolutely phenomenal and I’m already completely in love with the Iron Druid Chronicles. As long as the narrator doesn’t change, I think I’m going to listen to all six published books straight through >.>.

The Lascar's DaggerI’m still reading The Lascar’s Dagger and still really enjoying it. I would definitely have already finished it if I had a couple of evenings of reading this week, but oh well. If you enjoy fantasy with light and fast writing, this might be a good one. The one thing I’m worried about though is there is a romance brewing that I REALLY don’t want to happen….

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

The Queen of the Tearling The Islands of Chaldea

I didn’t have the chance to get to The Queen of the Tearling last week since the reading time was a bit light as I mentioned, but I keep hearing awesome things about it so I’m determined to read my beautiful hardcover! If I somehow have more time after that, I’d love to squeeze in Islands of Chaldea since it is a nice fun middle grade fantasy which I always love ;-). Have you read either yet?

Happy Reading!

  1. I didn’t read anything this week past Wednesday. And I’m the same as you, not reading makes me want to request/buy more books. The struggle of a holiday weekend is real!

    • It’s such a funny reaction to being deprived of reading time since it’s like my brain decides that I’m not reading because I don’t have anything to read or something which is OBVIOUSLY false ;-)

  2. Anya! I can’t wait to see what you think of Tearling. I just finished it last night and we’ll need to discuss things after or during your read. I’m really liking The Fire Wish…fast and fun read.

  3. The Fire Wish sounds great! I can’t wait to read! And ZOMG! I love The Iron Druid Chronicles and their audiobooks! The narrator, Luke Daniels, did such a great job with them! i just finished listening to the sixth book, Hunted, in preparation for reading Shattered. The series and the audiobooks just keep getting better and better. I believe that a few of the audiobooks in the series have received awards as well.

    • YEY! I’m so so happy to hear that Luke Daniels continues to narrate the series :D I find that trend in UF series a lot I think where the series get noticeably better as they progress and the author improves. *happy dance*

  4. I know what you mean. When I’m not doing much reading, I feel like requesting/buying more books. Not sure how that works out. But now that the holiday is over, you can relax and read again. :)

    • I’m so glad my irrational behavior is shared ;-)

HAHA, no unfortunately, now that the holiday is over I will be traveling every single week this month…. So airplane reading and such, but days full of exhaustion (I got three hours of sleep last night for example)

  5. The Fire Wish sounds really interesting and different. I’m excited to read it and can’t wait to hear your thoughts! :)

    • I was primarily interested in it because of that difference, and it definitely succeeded at having a fun YA fantasy in a Middle East-inspired setting I think :).

  6. I haven’t read either of your upcoming reads, but they both look interesting! And I understand the book-deprivation stuff. I tend to get really cranky when I can’t read — and to want lots of books!

  7. The Fire Wish sounded interesting to me. I look forward to your review. I’ve heard mixed reviews on this one. I don’t know how you keep three books straight at the same time! haha

    • Haha, magic! ;-) I ended up quite liking The Fire Wish, the characters weren’t particularly groundbreaking, but the setting was refreshing and the magic so fun :D

  8. You and I are so in sync! I’m listening to HOUNDED AS WELL!!

And your book resting versus book requesting logic madness makes complete sense to me

    • I just finished Fire Wish and found it quite enjoyable! The characters aren’t anything remarkable, but the setting was well done and the magic was lots of fun :D
