Updates from the Lair 8/24/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

This week I aimed for relaxing and getting in some good reading time before my classes start up again next week D: . I read four books for Bout of Books and just have about twenty pages left in a fifth, yey!

My Week

AtlantiaI borrowed an ARC of Atlantia from a friend this week so I made sure to read that first. It isn’t really a mermaid book, but more a blend of sci-fi future with a bit of magic. I did end up enjoying it quite a bit, though I’m disappointed that it is a standalone since we didn’t get as much info and description as I would have liked.

The Terror of the Southlands I then wanted something light and fun so I read my eARC of The Terror of the Southlands. Downside of reading this electronically was that all the cute letters and newspaper articles don’t show up well on a Kindle and can’t really be zoomed in on since it was a .mobi format. I think for the third book I’ll just buy a nice hardcover so I can get the full experience hehe.

Yesterday's KinWhen I spotted Yesterday’s Kin on NetGalley I got super pumped for another Nancy Kress read and I was definitely not disappointed. Nancy Kress did a great job of a believable and biological sensical way for aliens to be able to communicate and interact with humans. If you’re looking for a fast sci-fi read, definitely check this one out next month, it’s only 200 or so pages.

The Mirror EmpireFinally, I started The Mirror Empire this week and have been reading 100 or so pages everyday since it is pretty darn intense. I have only about 20 pages left, but the boyfriend wants to watch a movie so I probably won’t be able to finish before Bout of Books is over, curses! If you are interesting in some absolutely amazing fantasy world-building, this is your book.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Shifting Shadows The Vault of Dreamers Snow Like Ashes Chasing Power

Of course no matter how many books I read in a week, there are always more that I didn’t get to. I’m definitely going to be starting Shifting Shadows I think since I’m really excited to jump back into Mercy’s world and find out more about various secondary characters. I also have a physical ARC of Vault of Dreamers that I’d like to get to before its publication date. For my eARC, I think I’ll try Snow Likes Ashes since several of you have said it is great and then I’m also curious about Chasing Power, so I might see how it is. Anyone read it yet?

Happy Reading!

  1. Yay productivity! Chasing Power is next on my list; I don’t really remember what it’s about, but I’ve read a couple of other Sarah Beth Durst books and, though the romance and endings haven’t wow me, the writing is usually pretty decent. :)

    • Oo, now I’m excited both to hear what you think and try it myself :D Of course I still haven’t gotten to it, but I will try!

  2. I’m moving through Shifting Shadows at a pretty good clip. Hopefully I’ll finish it before I leave tomorrow night for DragonCo. Glad you enjoyed Mirror Empire so much!

  3. I’m a bit nervous to read VoD since the early reviews have been so meh. I hope Snow Like Ashes is good. Can’t wait to hear what you think of them all. Atlantia intrigues me.

    • Yup, that’s how I’m feeling about it currently as well. I started the first chapter though and the writing feels pretty quick, so I’ll probably just power through a bit more and see how I’m liking it. Since I got a physical copy I feel like I need to really try ya know?

  4. I have not heard of Nancy Kress before, but by the sounds of it, she sounds like quite an interesting author, I might have to go check her out. Sounds like you have had a busy week!

    • Omg Nancy Kress is aaaaaaaawesome! Beggars in Spain is a classic sci-fi from her that really twists genetic engineering is some crazy interesting directions ;-)

  5. I’m actually reading Chasing Power right now; it’s interested so far. I hope you like Snow Like Ashes because I’m really excited for it!

  6. I’m glad Atlantia is good, I’ve been waiting for that one. I hadn’t heard it was a standalone, dang.

Looks like you have a good week ahead of you. Vault of Dreamers and Snow like Ashes both look good!

    • Yeah, I mean I could definitely be wrong but it doesn’t have a series marker on Goodreads and I’m not really sure where things would go in a second book since there is an epilogue and everything ya know?

  7. Yay for relaxation and reading before classes star up again! I’m glad you enjoyed Atlantia but at the same time sorry it didn’t have more description to it. I’m very excited you’re reading Terror of the Southlands, I can’t wait to get into that one too :D I’ll be curious to read your thoughts on Vault of Dreams and I’m totally jelly that you’re already making time for Snow Like Ashes xD Happy reading doll xx

    • Omg Terror of the Southlands was soooo cute! but I highly advise getting a physical copy to read, I couldn’t read the notes on my Kindle D:

Pfft, screw reading schedules! I use eARCs as temptation for going to the gym so I have to just let myself read whatever I’m most excited about for those two hours a day!

  8. I’ve not read any yet. But I do love durst’s story telling

Happy reading and hugs for next week

    • Oo good to know! I haven’t read anything from Durst before but I’m in the mood for some solid writing :D

      Thanks!! <3

  9. Glad to hear you enjoyed Atlantia. After reading Matched I was nervous about this one, I’ll be honest. And out of your upcoming books I’m most interested in The Vault of Dreamers and Chasing Power! But I’ve also heard wonderful things about Snow Like Ashes. Happy reading! :)

  10. Sounds like a productive week! I’ve been at a conference for work for pretty much the entire week that was jam-packed with morning to night activities, so I haven’t touched any books.

How did you like The Mirror Empire?

    • Urgh, I hate it when conferences completely take over your evenings too. I’m always so tired of people by then D:

I really enjoyed Mirror Empire! It was definitely crazy intense but I went in expecting that and therefore was not disappointed ;-)

  11. The cover on Snow like Ashes is kinda striking. Plot summery says I will not be reading it, but pretty cover.

    • So pretty and it actually makes sense which I was not expecting! I’m only 20% in but perhaps I can help advise you on whatever in the summary makes you nervous?
