Updates from the Lair 8/31/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Hello lovelies! The school semester has started up for me once again which means dodging undergrads and having to schedule my work hours around the madness that is football home games on campus (seriously, there have been riots at times). I’m taking two actual classes and one short seminar and I’m quite excited for all of them! This is my last year having to take classes for my PhD so I’m really close :D. I’m taking Parallel Processing (learning how to write programs to use the multiple cores all computers have these days) and a Computational Biology class (learning how to write programs to analyze DNA information) and then the seminar class is on teaching evidence-based biology. I’m not sure that I’ll ever have the chance to teach biology, but I like learning about teaching anyway ;-). Oo, I was also really good and went to the gym three times this week! *gold star for me*

My Week

Shifting Shadows by Patricia Briggs I just finished Shifting Shadows a day or two ago and looooooved it! I’m normally not a fan of short story anthologies, but this was a great collection of stories from lots of secondary characters in the Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega books. They mostly took place earlier in the series so you’d be safe reading them even if you aren’t caught up except for two outtakes at the end. However, there is a nice intro for each story to tell you when they take place and give some context so you have warning about any spoilers :D.

Snow Likes AshesSnow Like Ashes has been my “I’m at the gym for two hours so I can read what I want!” book and I’m really loving it! The magic/world is interesting since there are four kingdoms that have forever one season and are called by that season and then four kingdoms called Rhythms that go through all four seasons normally. The magic is passed through the royal line and different kingdoms always have female or male heirs with magic power so there is some nice balance to the gender roles. Things are going in a love triangle direction, but it is one that makes some sense (arranged marriage versus actual feelings) so I’m okay with it so far ;-).

The Midnight Queen Finally, I just started The Midnight Queen and was initially put off by the main character’s stutter just because it is annoying to read, but the writing style is one of those quirky and sometimes breaking the fourth wall styles that I like, plus cool magic! Also omg that purple cover is GORGEOUS and I’m heart-broken that it isn’t coming out in hardback D:. But enjoying it!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

The Vault of Dreamers Silverblind The Young Elites

Since I just started The Midnight Queen, it’s probably going to take up most of next week, however I might start poking my nose in The Vault of Dreamers anyway because I like switching between genres ;-). I also just got an eARC of Silverblind which I’m so incredibly excited for and will be starting as my next “gym so I read what I want” book hehe. Finally, if I some how sacrifice a goat to a Time Lord and finish those, I’m hoping to start The Young Elites since it is a borrowed copy and I neeeeeed to return it, ha. Anyone know a Time Lord taking sacrifices?

Happy Reading!

  2. You were at the gym for 2 hours?! Dang girl. If I were you that would’ve been an hour of exercise and an hour of clutching my sides on the floor, hahaha. And yaaay for Snow Like Ashes! It’s been one of my most anticipated books for the year so far, but I’ve been burned by beautiful YA covers before so I’m wary…The Midnight Queen sounds good too! A unique writing style is always a draw for me.

    • I was just walking the whole time ;-). I’m aiming for 10k steps a day and it takes about two hours given how much I sit at work during the day, haha. Just gives me an excuse to read fun books more :D

  3. I can’t wait for Snow Like Ashes! I haven’t heard anything negative about it so far, which makes my year pretty much. I think it’s the one I’m most drooling for, ever since I got a peek at that cover and synopsis ;)

THE YOUNG ELITES 100%! I’ve read the first chapter and that was enough to make me completely lose it and start crying for October.

  4. I’m so excited for Snow LIke Ashes and The Midnight Queen! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them. Also, your classes sound really interesting. I hope you enjoy them

    • They are both pretty awesome fantasies I must say! Thanks, I’m excited for the classes, starting to get tired of them at this point, but I’m sure I’ll get excited again soon :)
