Updates from the Lair 8/3/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Why yes, I am writing another Updates post in an airport waiting for a delayed flight, how did you guess?? I’m in New York again this week, but to present research instead of to get all the awesome books ;-). My week has been full of hurriedly getting as much work/research/reimbursement paperwork done as I can before flying off again on Wednesday (when I’m writing this post, yey!). I’m really really excited to be done with traveling for the summer and it is soooooo close to that point. I think I’ll take a few days off in celebration and read!

My Week

Storm SirenI spent most of my week reading Storm Siren and it was completely worth it. There is a lot of world-building and multiple magic systems, but instead of getting bogged down in the details, Storm Siren gives little hints along the way ;-). There might have been a lot of crying at the end too, which is always a good sign for me since it means that I really connected with the characters :D. Make sure to check this one out! And I might be having a giveaway for it in the future ;-).

The Jewel by Amy EwingWhen everyone was getting excited about The Jewel a bit earlier in the year, I had no idea what the excitement was about. I wasn’t a big Selection fan, so the pitch didn’t intrigue me. However, I was so so wrong. I am LOVING The Jewel because it combines dystopia with magic for some lovely dark fantasy and heart-pounding action. I’m really glad I decided to give it a shot with my reading group buddies!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Frostborn Dissonance The Buried Life
I really feel indecisive about books this week, I just am not feeling strongly pulled in any one direction and am mostly feeling stressed about not having as many reviews prepped as I normally do, so maybe I just need a couple of fast reads to make me feel better? Anyway, anyone have thoughts about any of these three that are currently sounding intriguing? Other suggestions for fun and fast books that you’ve seen arrive into my possession recently?

Happy Reading!

  1. I’m super behind on commenting this week, so I hope that means you’re back home and relaxing after all that travel. Storm Siren looks pretty cool, and I just read a lackluster review on The Jewel. Hmm…I’ll have to compare reviews when you post yours. :)

    • I am back in the boyfriend’s home which is close enough for me ;-). The weekend has been full of adventuring and sleeping yey. I can see the Jewel being hit or miss, but I loved the magic and am kind of immune to YA romance silliness at this point, haha.

  2. Maybe I’ll have to give The Jewel a try I think I picked that up at BEA

    • It’s a bit fluffy with the worldbuilding but fast and addictive ;-) Got me out of my reading funk at least!

  3. Maggie just finished reading Storm Siren and really enjoyed it.

  4. I really enjoyed Frostborn! It was a quick and easy read with some interesting characters. Kate read and reviewed Dissonance, I remember it wasn’t awesome, but not terrible? *can’t remember*

    • Yey, I’m reading Frostborn right now and finding it quite a fun and quick read, though the whole half-giant from a human mother thing seems kind of… not possible given the size differences? Ya know? >.>

  5. So so SOOOOOOO glad you liked Storm Siren so much!! Hoping to start it tonight… if I finish my current read. *reads faster*

Also REALLY glad you’re liking The Jewel. It sounds SO good to me, and I’ve seen a few pretty low ratings so far, so your enjoyment has me excited again. YAY.

    AND YAYYYYYYYYYY DISSONAAAAANCE!!! :D

    • Haha, right?? I want to read like seven books at once right now!

Huh, what have people been saying bad about The Jewel? It is kind of a dystopian fantasy mash up so maybe people don’t like that combination if they don’t like fantasy?

Looks like The Jewel will be worth the read! I’ve read some great reviews, but also some bad ones for it. I guess I’m still a little skeptical because it’s being compared to The Selection, and I really didn’t like that book. I read Dissonance awhile back, and I really loved the world-building (some people have complained that it’s too much), but I thought it was pretty good. I just didn’t like the romance/ the male love interest. Looks like you have a lot of great books to read! :D

    • So I never read The Selection because I was just not interested in it at all but really ended up enjoying The Jewel. There isn’t any sort of competition for the prince’s love bullcrap ;-)

Since I read adult spec fic, I suspect I’ll appreciate the world building, so I’ll definitely be trying to read Dissonance soon!

  7. I really liked Storm Siren too. I haven’t heard of The Jewel. Ooh, all three of those look good to me! At least you’ve got too many choices instead of too few. I’d like that problem. ;) Wish I could help narrow it down for you, but I haven’t read any of those.

    • Hehe, library loot is always tempting to me as well. There is something refreshing about not feeling beholden to anyone to review a book ;-)
