Updates from the Lair 9/21/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

Oof, what a crazy week, I’m exhausted! I decided to drop one of my classes because it was driving me crazy and was supposed to be the fun one…. Oh well! I got very little sleep various nights because of staying up too late and getting up way too early and still feel like I have too much to do :-/. On the plus side:

I crocheted a pumpkin :D.

My Week

The Young Elites This is one reason I only got four hours of sleep one night…. No matter how much I knew that I needed to stop, I just couldn’t put The Young Elites down. You guys, I LOVE sleeping! It takes a seriously awesome book to make me decide only sleeping four hours is an acceptable price to pay. The only reason I haven’t finished it yet is because my week has been that insane. Hopefully very very soon ;-).

SilverblindI’ve also been reading Silverblind as my ebook and omg so much love! It’s been a seriously awesome reading week despite how little actual reading I’ve been able to get done, haha. But seriously, I think this is going to be my favorite of the series because Dorie is doing FIELD RESEARCH studying magical creatures :D. Pre-order this now! Dooooo iiiiiit!

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

Captive Infinite Harmony Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman

I’ve been very lucky this week to get several of my absolute most anticipated books, so I’m just giving up on reading by publication date because no other books will be able to compete until I’ve devoured these. Captive has been on my dying to read list ever since I reached the last page of Pawn last year, so I was so happy when a certain awesome friend sent me her copy! Infinite Harmony is the sequel to a new series by my favorite indie-author and I’m freaking addicted to her writing and was so flattered when she sent me a copy. And finally, yes, I am very very very lucky and got the extra (slightly damaged) ARC of Shadow Scale from another awesome friend. I’ll be reading it asap and putting it up for giveaway, have no fear ;-).

Happy Reading!

  1. That pumpkin is so cool!!! I’ve been trying to learn to crochet, but I don’t spend enough time on it.
Glad the Young Elites is that good! I’m very excited to read it.
That’s disappointing about your class. I always hate when one of my classes turns out that way.

  2. Oh Shadow Scale, I need to look into that one. I love the little pumpkin! So cute! Have a great week!

  3. Two things: one, that punpkin is friggin’ adorable and two, SHADOW SCALE. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on that one – and read it myself of course! I remember getting really excited about Seraphina because she plays flute and so do I (although admittedly I’m no virtuoso). It’s not exactly a popular instrument in literature so I was pretty pumped to see that. I haven’t heard much about the new Aimee Carter series and I’m intrigued about that one as well!

That pumpkin is really cute!! And now I want to read The Young Elites more than ever lol

  5. Pumpkin! But yes, I’m glad you dropped a class if it was driving you that crazy. Setting boundaries for maintaining sanity and all that. :)

    • I want to make all the pumpkins :D I’m really glad that I’ve reached the point with classes where I care a lot less since my advisor has been telling me for years that I need to worry about them less, haha

  6. That pumpkin is so cute!

  7. I’ve been hearing great things about The Young Elites. It makes me so excited to read the book!

As for Captive, Silverblind and Shadow Scale, I really need to get around to reading the first book :)

  8. Captive AND Shadow Scale? I need those in my life! Ahhh.

  9. I read the Young Elites this week too! You’re right it’s really good! I haven’t read the Ironside trilogy, I’ll have to check it out. Congrats on your good week of reading. :) I hope next week is good too, and you enjoy your dragon book.

  10. Crocheted pumpkin is adorable! I love i when bookbloggers get crafty like this! :3

I hear good things about The Young Elites. I think I’d like to read it, if I get the chance, to see what it’s like. Glad you liked it so much!

    • Thanks :D I love crocheting while watching TV! I’m making a pony now :D

Definitely read the first page in the book store, I think it’ll be straight forward to figure out if you’d like it ;-)

  11. Shadow Scale!! *sobs*

  12. I should finish The Young Elites tonight myself. Seems pretty good, not sure I am finding it as unputdownable as you are, but hoping it is building to something awesome.

  13. That’s too bad about the class you were looking forward to taking. What was it on? And the crocheted pumpkin is adorable!

The cover of Infinite Harmony is absolutely stunning. I haven’t heard of Tammy Blackwell, so now I’m intrigued. What are her stories about? And I haven’t read Seraphina yet (it’s sitting on my TBR shelf), but I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts on its sequel Shadow Scale.

Oh, you had asked about my review of “Storm Siren.” It should be in the CommentLuv link below. ;)

    • Computational biology! I should have loved it and I’m pretty sure that the subject matter will still be interesting (I might buy one of the books off the recommended list to get an idea), but bad professors are just too much for me these days.

Tammy Blackwell’s two series are YA urban fantasy with coyote and wolf shifters and Seers and two other mysterious magical beings ;-). The world is cool, but it is her hilarious writing and absolutely wonderful characters that make me push her books on everyone, haha.

      Yey, thanks!!

  14. The pumpkin is awesome! I really wish I could crochet like that. I have been knitting in the past, but it is not of an amazing standard, I need more practice! And oooh, I really like the cover of Captive. Have not actually heard of any of those series, but I might have to have a look on Goodreads along with The Young Elites, books that make you miss your sleep always make me curious because I love sleep too!

    • I’ve only been crocheting for a few weeks, so it is definitely something you can pick up quickly :D

Mwahaha, I shall push all the YA series on you!
