Updates from the Lair

This week has been a combination of discovering new fun things on the Internet (Pintrest and BookLikes), and trying to actually get some reading done. I’m not sure why, but I’ve been having such a hard time getting a decent chunk of reading done D: . Doesn’t help that Mr. Boy is watching TV instead of letting me read >.>. I’ve also decided that I’m going to be getting a Kobo Aura for my next e-reader, sometime between now and the winter holidays. If it goes on sale at my favorite local bookstore, I’ll grab one, otherwise I’ll wait for someone else to buy it for me, haha. There are so many times that I would like to have the backlighting, so it’s time to get what I want!

My Week

Into the Still Blue

I finished Into the Still Blue this week and was unfortunately rather meh about it. I think that had something to do with my reading slump, since I wanted to be loving it and was disappointed when I didn’t. Oh well, hopefully the final version is a bit more gripping.

I read Bang too, and loved it so much! McMann makes a really great point with Bang’s storyline and I was honestly moved. Many authors are starting to include LGBT characters, but McMann goes far beyond that and I just <3 Bang so much. You gotta read this series!

I’ve started Waterfell since I’m one book away from having a solid 80% feedback ratio on NG ;-). It’s nice that they are showing us that ratio now, since it’s going to help keep me in control when requesting! I’m suddenly much more motivated to get my current requests read, even though their pub dates are far enough off. Anyway, Waterfell is a disappointment so far since I was hoping for a cool mermaid book and instead I’ve gotten a paranormal romance with aliens. WTF?

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

The Grim Company by Luke Scull was an entertaining dark fantasy, though a little gross.

I made a decision about Goodreads.

We discussed our Top Ten Favorite Sequels this week!

I’m giving my ARC of Twistrose Key, so if you want a debut MG to read, check it out :D

I started a new feature called What Dragons Know where I tell you what I learned in grad school this week!

Seven Forges from Strange Chemistry was interesting but a bit scattered.

Full Blooded was a disappointment this week, I’m definitely tired of werewolves at this point.

I’m giving away my extra copy of Bang by Lisa McMann, and seriously you must read this book! Should I give away my read one too?

I have a couple of really exciting ARCs in Spoils and Tribute this week, make sure to let me know what you want giveaways for!

Reports from Other Lairs

Here are some awesome reviews and discussions you should check out :D

As part of his release of Steelheart, Brandon Sanderson reveals his third law of magic! “Expand, don’t add”

Sarah discovered some of her reviews were missing from Goodreads this week, she’s giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I’m suspicious.

Christina discusses her frustrations with ARCs, mainly that the why is so often a mystery!

Soap Boxing explained their objections to Goodreads’ antics, i.e. that the deletions seem to be targeting certain reviewers as punishment.

Felicia is hosting a fitness challenge for October and I’m totally joining in! Book Blogger Walkers Unite!

Parajunkee has revisited the pressure of reviewing every day, though I have to admit that I never expected myself or anyone else to review a book a day, that’s insane!

Bitter Kingdom from Belle of the Literati – Oh my Godstone is right! ;-)

Entangled from Cuddlebuggery – Science does not work that way D:

Parallel from Smash Attack Reads – Excellent use of RENT soundtrack!

3:59 from My Friends are Fiction – Didn’t connect with the characters :(

Happy Reading!

  1. OOOH you just discovered Pinterest? Pinterest is a time suck, I tell you. It is wonderful but also watch out o.O. Me too – I’ve also been having a hard time getting reading done. Like my commenting, I seem to lack the necessary motivation but maybe I’ll finally get caught up with that by tonight…. As for the Kobo Aura, maybe you can make a deal with Mr. Boy – he can watch the t.v. if he has that special present in mind :P.

Dawww. Your comment on my Through the Ever Night review made me happy and excited for the third book but it was meh for you? What do you mean the final version? Is there a lot of stuff that would get changed from ARC to final copy? I don’t tend to check many books for changes like that since I haven’t seen that many o.O.

I agree that many authors are starting to include LGBT characters! The question is — will there be more LGBT MCs? I wasn’t a huge fan of McMann’s contemporary and haven’t gotten around to her other work, but your few sentences are raising my interest level :D.

Me too about wanting to get my current requests read! The only thing is that I won’t have the link to turn in even if I wrote the review for a far off pub date o.O. What do you do about that?

OOOH I must come back to your What Dragons Know feature. I am curious about anything grad school related.

    • Hehe oh Pintrest! I’m confused by it’s handling of animated gifs though >.> Some of them work but some don’t. Yeeessss, I might have already mentioned the present idea, though if I find a sale, I’m going for it :D

Yeah, I haven’t actually checked for changes either, but I’m thinking that my meh-ness could have been from the writing not being quite as exciting as I hoped for, which might be fixed with another round of polish, I’m not sure though D: I just hope!

I’m guessing that McMann’s writing is a dividing topic, since I love it but have noticed a lot of people get annoyed by it. I haven’t read anything besides her Visions series though, so I don’t know if the writing is the same :( I do want more LGBT MC’s, but I worry that publishers will be resistant since it will make romances not fit in the mold anymore. A same-sex romance between MC and love interest might alienate a lot of readers ya know?

If I read something far ahead, I put it up on BookLikes (previously GR), and include the link to that and then say the date of publication and include the link that the post will be posted at. Most pubs don’t want a review going up too far out anyway, so I think they’ll understand.

Eee! Good to know :D I will write more grad school posts then :)

  2. I bought Steelheart because of your review – I hope I can read it soon!

  3. Interesting discussions this week, especially about Goodreads. I’ms till debating what to do if anything. And to review everyday – bananas!
