Updates from the Lair 8/17/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

After the weird recovery week that I ended up having last week, I was determined to be productive this week and I succeeded! I did all the research and preparation for the term starting along with getting to the gym three times, hitting 10k steps two days, and reading some pretty great books! This weekend is a bit mad since our annual congress is starting on Saturday for grad students so I basically won’t have a weekend, but to make up for that, I’ve decided to join in Bout of Books a couple of days late!

Bout of Books

I’ll be done with the congress on Tuesday evening, so I might be able to get a bit of reading in on Monday and Tuesday, but really I’ll be starting for serious on Wednesday since I’ve already decided that I’m just going to take the rest of the week off to relax for a tiny bit before classes start *gulp*. If I’m spending all day reading, I can usually manage about a book a day, so therefore I’ll be aiming for three books (since the weekend will be boyfriend time mostly). There are about twenty books that I want to read omg right nao, so these are the ones I’ll be choosing from depending on which grabs me:

Bout of Books Goals
You see my conundrum yes?? This is why I want to do nothing but read for a few days just to be able to sink my teeth into some of these finally! And of course there will be some eARCs included too since I’ll still be trying to get to the gym and keep my health kick going :D. But yes, three books, maybe four or more since some of these are shorter *mwahahaha*.

My Week

The Martian by Andy WeirI got The Martian from the library a couple of weeks ago after having two friends recommend it to me and I agree with their recommendation! The Martian is a great mix of humor and hard sci-fi. I found myself deciding to tell my boyfriend facts about NASA based on what I was reading in the book because everything is that convincing. I have to keep reminding myself that humans haven’t made it to Mars yet since that is the best way to remember that this is a work of fiction >.>. The main character is hilarious though, so I never find myself bored :D.

Prototype by M. D. Waters As I mentioned, I need an ebook for the gym, so I’ve also been reading Prototype this week and loving it! I’m so proud of myself for actually getting to the two review books from July that I missed but really wanted to read and for finishing this duology in a timely manner :D. I find myself struggling to remember some things from Archetype, but still really enjoying finding out about the resistance and such ;-).

White Cat by Holly Black Finally, I of course had to have an audiobook and recently downloaded White Cat from Audible since I was a bit embarrassed to admit that I still hadn’t read anything by Holly Black despite loving her as a person whenever I’ve had the chance to meet and chat with her. I am officially part of her fan club now though since The Curseworkers world is soooooo cool! I hadn’t realized it was an alternative world where magic has always been known to exist to the general populace, which I find a lot more fun than hidden magic to be honest ;-).

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Next Week’s Reading

(books up next on the reading list, thoughts?)

The Exiled Queen Atlantia The Mirror Empire The Terror of the Southlands

Deja vu, I know I know *hangs head*. I feel like I never stick to plans, but I really am going to start listening to The Exiled Queen this week since it is the only audiobook I have currently and I’m seriously in the mood for fantasy. From that giant stack up there, I’m thinking I’ll start with Atlantia and see how I like it and possibly also try The Mirror Empire and see if I can handle the apparently really crazy in a good way world-building. Since I also need to have an ebook to read, I am determined to get through The Terror of the Southlands because I loved the first one and it seems like a great book to bribe myself into going to the gym, haha. Do you have advice of which others from the stack at the top of the post would be good for read-a-thoning?

Happy Reading!

  1. Have a great (most of) the week reading! I envy you! Wow, look at all the books! I now understand your dilemma. Atlantia and Vault of Dreamers are on my to read list. (But I didn’t get the arcs) I did get Young Elites though and that was my top pick! :) Good luck deciding! At least it’s a good problem to have. ;)

    • Haha, definitely a good problem to have, just so hard to decide! I decided to skip the last day of the conference to get started reading early and read Atlantia today, quite good :D

  2. Relaxation? Health? What are these strange things of which you speak? I thought you already read Scorched. A dragon book you missed? O.O But I’m glad you enjoyed White Cat! Good luck with the congress and the read-a-thon!

  3. Good luck with The Mirror Empire – it’s very weird and complex and… weird?
As for your pile, I vote for The Burning Sky if you are looking for something light and sweet. It has magic, boarding school, girl dressed as boy, one prince, one awesome sorceress, even dragons. :)

  4. I am so curious about Atlantia! You must let me know how it is. I’ve started TYE and so far I’m really enjoying it. Death Marked! We both enjoyed the first so thinking the second will be great. I’ve not gotten a copy yet :-( reminds me I should probably request it! Let me know what you think of it too.

    • I really enjoyed Atlantia, just finished today :D. It isn’t really a mermaid book, but oh well, haha. I stole Death Marked from Krys’ mail ;-) I’m sure it’ll be on Edelweiss eventually too

  5. I heard so many wonderful things about The Mirror Empire, I hope to get around to it at some point. Sounds like you have quite an awesome stack of books to read in the coming week, happy reading :)

  6. I jus finished Mirror Empire. Absolutely loved it! Also, a book a day?? I feel so inadequate ;) really wish I could read that fast.

    • Haha, well I just started The Mirror Empire (love it already!) and I definitely won’t be reading it in a day ;-). The book a day was when I was literally doing nothing but reading, ie I took off from work to have a reading vacation, haha!

  7. Adelynne Chang says:

Wow! Your stack of books look great!! I’m planning to read City of a Thousand Dolls as well- I know the sequel is coming out soon and it looks really good. Especially that cover! :D

I’m so excited to read The Young Elites! Do you know when you plan to write a review for that?

I feel like Atlantia has been a little too over-hyped. I read an excerpt of it but it didn’t look as good as I want it to be (and I didn’t really like the Matched series). Deep Blue was a promising book about mermaids too, but it wasn’t the best and didn’t reach my expectations. Hopefully you’ll like Atlantia though.

The Vault of Dreamers looks like a promising book too! I’m looking forward to your reviews :D

    • I’m going to try to read The Young Elites this week, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to, but my review wouldn’t be til closer to the publication date in any case ;-)

Urgh, I was not a fan of Deep Blue, such a disappointment :( Atlantia I ended up liking quite a bit ;-)

  8. Holly Black’s Curse Workers series is one of my favorites – so unique and so well written! And i’m super excited for Atlantia and The Young Elites! Hope you get some reading done, sounds like you have a crazy week ahead!

    • I’m so excited to get to Red Glove as soon as I can! Bam, I succeeded at reading Atlantia already and it was quite good, hopefully I can get to Young Elites still this week too haha

  9. Good luck on your readathon goals and I’m happy that this week was a more productive one than the last! I’m also pumped you enjoyed White Cat because EVERYONE keeps telling me to read it!! I’ve had less than good luck with my 1st Holly Black read but I’ve been told White Cat is her best so I’m excited :D As far as your upcoming reads go, I still need to get into the Seven Realms books and The Terror of the Southlands! Atlantia is another one I can’t wait to get my hands on – I hope it delivers! Happy reading Anya xxx

  11. Oh, I’d never even heard of Bout of Books, but am now VERY keen to join in!
Unfortunately, I work an awful lot, so likely wouldn’t be able to chat and participate all that much, but I’d love to join in as much as possible. Thanks so much for making me aware of it!

Of course, if I participate, I’ll have to schedule a break for Saturday night when the new Doctor makes his appearance on the screen ;)

  12. I got the Young Elites on my pile as well, which caught me by surprise. Know nothing about it but people seem pretty excited so I look forward to it.

    • Haha, nice, congrats! Yeah, people are pretty darn geeked about another book from Lu. I only got to borrow it from a friend, so I’m quite excited for that ;-)

  13. Yay for bout of books! I’m participating too and I’m so excited to just read and chat with others :) Seems like you’ve got a good pile too, can’t wait to see what you think of those. And yay for White Cat! I have to re-read the first two and finally read the last one some day, I remember really liking it. Have a great weekend!

    • Woot bout of books :D How can you resist not reading Black Heart immediately?? I’ve resisted downloading book two just because I don’t have an audible credit currently, haha.
