Updates from the Lair 3/09/14

Updates from the Lair

Updates from the Lair is my weekly wrap-up post that includes what happened in my real life, what I’ve been reading, my posts from the week, my book haul for the week, books I added to my wish-list (sort of like Waiting on Wednesday), and what I’m thinking about reading next week (and would love your advice on!).

My weeks have gotten so boring I’m afraid! Last week I had the 48-hour readathon and then I kind of continued it on Monday since I wanted to finish Words of Radiance and therefore couldn’t work because I was sick >.> <.<. I finished though :D. Also it was spring break this week, which is weird for grad students since I didn’t have class, but I was still expected to work on research, but maybe not quite as hard? It’s all a bit weird, so I didn’t feel too bad reading half of Monday, haha. I’m waiting for results from my MRI to come back and meeting with my doctor this week to find out if I have a pinched nerve or just new muscle pain, should be exciting? At least I have good books to read! Oh and happy Daylight Saving Time to those that are affected by that ;-).

My Week

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

Obviously the big exciting book this week was still Words of Radiance, woot! I finished on Monday in a breathtaking sprint to the end and now I’m dying to discuss with people and read the next book. Also anyone who has read Warbreaker must email me to discuss >.> something <.<. GAH!!!!! I love this series so much!!!!!

A Darkling Sea by James L Cambias

I then started and DNF’d A Darkling Sea. It had a really cool premise with lobster-looking aliens on an ice moon and humans trying and failing to interact with the aliens. Then another type of alien popped up and ruined everything…. These other aliens are described as kind of looking like otters but with dark grey skin and brightly colored genitals. On top of that lovely image, they have this really awkward social structure involving leader/follower relationships requiring dominant/submissive sexual interactions as well and genders morphing depending on which role the individual is in. Guess which gender the submissive individual becomes?? :D Yeah, I couldn’t read anymore.

Strange Sweet Song

I requested a review copy of Strange Sweet Song ages ago but didn’t get an ARC, so I requested the eARC, got it, and then a finished copy showed up. Therefore, I started on this one after the disappointment of a DNF this week and I like it quite a bit. The fantasy elements are based off of an opera, which is pretty cool and new. Sing (the MC, yes she sings too) isn’t all that enjoyable of an MC and some love ridiculousness has been thrown in at the end, but if you like music in your stories, you’ll definitely enjoy the music conservatory aspects. Fun fact: I sang a bunch in high school and college, so I liked jumping back into that world.

And in case you missed it, these were my posts this week:

Reports from Other Lairs

Check out Sci-fi and Fantasy Friday for the reviews and discussions I found this week!

Spoils and Tribute

Spoils and Tribute is a feature of On Starships and Dragonwings where I tell you about the books I’ve bought and received recently. I promise that I paid for all my spoils and I’m not letting the “tribute” go to my head ;-). I’ve decided to include it in my weekly updates since it’s part of the week. This is basically my version of Tynga’s Stacking the Shelves.

Spoils

Starglass

I traded for a hardcover of Starglass that showed up on Friday, yey! Another older book that I’ve been meaning to read and now I’m one step closer ;-).

Tribute

The Wizard's Promise

I requested The Wizard’s Promise as soon as it came up on NetGalley so I was really excited to get approved. I enjoyed the previous two books and the premise for this one sounds awesome.

That’s it for this week’s haul and it’s honestly a bit of a relief! I’ve been trying hard to request less lately and have also been less obsessive about requesting ARCs since I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with what I have to read already, haha.

Planning to Pillage

(i.e. the books I added to my wishlist this week)

Silverblind by Tina Connolly

*grabby hands* I love this trilogy and am really excited that Silverblind finally has a cover and is getting so close! Dorie!!!

Mortal Heart

And basically the same thing again, love this series and super excited for the third book! Annith :D

Unmade

I haven’t read the first book, Entangled, yet, but a reading buddy says it had the feel of Firefly with entertaining banter and a space adventure, so I’m obviously game! You may recall I just bought Entangled last week (signed copy!) so I’m excited in advance for the next book ;-).

Next Week’s Reading

A Turn of Light Take Me To Your Reader The Mark of the Dragonfly Blood and Iron

It’s funny when I put up two long fantasy books in the reading plan isn’t it? A Turn of Light is 800 pages, but that will definitely be this week since that is the last physical copy I got for March. Then I’m only reading one of the short stories from Take Me To Your Reader, so I figure I might as well read that in an evening. Mark of the Dragonfly is nice and short, so I might be able to fit that in perhaps >.>. Or I could just jump straight to Blood and Iron, thoughts? ;-)

Happy Reading!

  1. I’m really enjoying A Turn of Light so far though I wish the magic creatures were a bit more clear during Wisps sections. See I KNEW A Darkling Sea would not be for me!!

  2. I hadn’t realized STRANGE SWEET SONG was inspired by an opera–that’s fascinating! And cool that it allowed you to relive fond memories, too. I’m dying for MORTAL HEART as well. Let the pillaging begin! :D
